A done deal? (updated)
| | Comments (73)

I'm hearing some rumblings that the Orioles just traded Oscar Salazar to the San Diego Padres.

I don't have confirmation at this point, or what the Orioles would receive in return, but I'm working on it.

Update: I received confirmation from a club official that the deal is done. Salazar is going to the Padres for a player who will likely stay on the 25-man roster.

That's all I can write at the moment. I'll be able to pass along more details later tonight, but obviously, another move would have to be made for David Hernandez to fit onto the roster tomorrow. It'll all make sense in an hour or so. Keep checking back with me.

Aww crap! Why couldn't they have sent Berken down and let Bass or Hendrickson have a spot start rather than trade Oscar? Or DFA Hill or Pie. Oscar was one of the only guys on the team who can hit lefties.

This is frustrating. The Padres have very little to offer. i hope you're wrong.

Common Roch ...Dont leave us hanging!

hopefully its not for a PTBNL!

John said:

TY Rock.....I bet it will be a PTBNL and I don't have a problem with that.

Not a PTBNL. - Roch

Dylan said:

Sorry to see him go. Felix Pie lives to see another day in Baltimore.

Eric K said:

Stay on the 25-man roster? Um... okay...

Dan S. said:

It's gotta be Josh Banks. He's from Baltimore and he was just DFA by SD.

shernorioles said:

That is really great for Salazar. Maybe he can play everyday. He deserves that. He has paid his dues in the minors. Good Luck to Salazar. But I hope we get somebody decent....to help our club.

Phil said:

This is obviously premature, as I'm sure you're looking it up, but is this someone from the Padres big league team, or a minor league player? Any thoughts? I feel like the Pads don't have a whole lot of depth in the minors to deal that would make the O's 25 man roster.

Kathyo said:

Whatever happens, I am happy for Oscar. He deserves to play in the major leagues.

Larry Bird said:

Good luck Oscar

Tommy from Sweden said:

Everybody just wait awhile -- say, til' the end of the season -- before we pass judgment on this deal.

We have to; it's not just a question of Salazar over Pie. On sheer principle we do not trade the likable player before we place much-maligned under-achiever on waivers, but this is not a game of principle. Andy MacPhail's job is to make the club better. End of story.

We will have to wait to and see whether that is the case.

Carlos O. said:

Maybe it is Josh Banks (or another pitcher), and if so... maybe, just maybe, HE'LL get the start and David Hernandez stays in the minors? Or, maybe Hernandez still gets called up, and Berken gets sent down, and Banks (or whoever we get) starts in Berken's spot?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No. Hernandez starts tomorrow and Berken starts Wednesday. That hasn't changed. Trust me, it'll all make sense later. I just can't write anything else at the moment until a few more details are taken care of. - Roch

oliver said:

It could be banks, but then we would need another position player i think.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nope. They had an extra position player and one fewer starter after sending down Hernandez. - Roch

Doug said:

At this point, without knowing who the Orioles received, the deal makes no sense from either perspective. The Orioles, assuming the player does stay on the roster, still need to find a spot for Hernandez and the Padres traded for a 31 year old bench player, even though they are not close to being in the race. What gives? Odd. Could it be that SD has overvalued Salazar and the Orioles are receiving a real player in return, someone that actually has a future? Doubt it, seriously.

Brian Giles said:

Here I come, Baltimore!

Eric in PA said:

Can you tell us if we got fair value in return at least Roch?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How would you determine fair value? - Roch

adrian gonzalez is in the hospital . could him being in there . have any impact of the padres getting a back up ???

BC Mike said:

Re: Wieters swing ..I noticed the long swoop right off the hop. I think that better pitch recognition and some adaptive measures will sort that out. Remember John Olerud and of course Ken Griffey Jr. to name a couple.

Another topic: Should we be looking at Bedard as a potential free agent signing in the off season ?

He is not working deep into games but he still strikes out a lot of batters and has a sub 3 ERA.

Another Another topic: Is Zaun better at the plate because his playing time is diminished ...better matchups and not so tired from everyday ,everyday?

Evan said:

Any chance it's Chase Headley?

Brian H said:

So is Rich Hill being released,

I think this trade sucks unless we get a good player in return because Oscar was good if I was Dave I would have played him more. Felix Pie the guy thats just taking up a roster spot.

They could release Hill it makes sense because there is no doubt that Tillman will be up for the Royals series if not sooner
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're not releasing Hill. - Roch

Eric in PA said:

Gallagher?

oliver said:

Could it be Kouzmanoff?? corner if , and we need a good 3b so this is a prelude to something else methinks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No. - Roch

Brian in SC said:

Admit it, you're keeping us hanging here and loving it.

Hatepaste said:

For Adrian Gonzalez, straight up. I'm in.

Tracy said:

I hate suspense right before going into a series with the Yankees. Come on, Roch... please!!

duke of york said:

What a stupid move. The guy can rake and we practically give him away. This organization is beyond hope.

Brian said:

So Hernandez on Monday and Berken still in the rotation. Any chance the Tuesday starter has changed?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No. - Roch

Michael said:

I really hope it's Everth Cabrera

oliver said:

Does anyone have a guess as to whom it will be ?

DK said:

Jake Peavy? (OK, wishful thinking)...

Johnnyk said:

Roch ....Could it be the Ex-Cub & recently obtained Sean Gallagher???

Then AM's love affair with ex-Cubs can continue.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is he trying to break Ryan Freel's record for most trades in one season? - Roch

ron said:

chase headley????
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No. - Roch

skindooley said:

Well who ever it is I hope they're good, but I don't think we should be expecting anybody that good. Salazar is not a viable major league starter at any position. The guy can hit and I liked him, but nobody is giving up anything significant for this guy. A lot of people will disagree but I still think we're better off giving up Salazar then Pie.

glenn said:

Roch,

My guess is some reliever and for now they send Mickolio back to AAA. I'm going to go with a lefty reliever because we don't have the lefty specialist and now Wilfredo Perez is hurt. By looking at the Padres roster i'm going to go with either LUIS PERDOMO or LUKE GREGERSON.

Or it could just be BANKS and still send Mickolio down.

Johnny O's said:

Giles? or one of their other hurty old players?? Probably Banks though.... smooth move ATC.

Salazar should not have been in the long term plans and anything more than a bag of balls in a good trade IMO

John said:

I think its Adrián González

I think you're wrong. - Roch

D said:

Lets throw in a minor league leaguer and bring over Michael Young. He's on the DL but when healthy he's solid and the Padres were looking to get rid of him earlier in the year. But that would solve the roster crunch and get us a nice middle rotation guy if his injury isn't too serious. Wishful thinking...I know.

Brian in SC said:

I've been a big supporter of MacPhail, but I will be seriously hacked off if he just traded for Giles. Dude is done.

D said:

Meant Chris Young.

John said:

Well is it a SP mmmmm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope to file something else shortly. Sorry to keep you all in suspense. That's not my intent. - Roch

Candyman said:

I hope he was traded for that swarm of bees that invaded San Diego a few weeks ago. Now that would put some STING into the O's offense!

I'll bet we sent Salazar to the Pads for Steve Garvey's old black book full of chicks numbers.

Jphny O's said:

if you mean Chris Young, I don't think he'd do so hot in the AL East. I'd be willing to take bets that his 85 mph fastball actually leaves the park faster than it leaves Young's hand.

Nick said:

My guess is Meredith

James F said:

If it is Everth Cabrera or Kyle Blanks, I'll be blown away, but very, very pleased. But I don't see, besides Will Venable, who we don't need, who else it could be.

John said:

I will just kept checking every few min.

nate said:

Just from looking at stats the Pads have a deep bullpen. This could be the start to a busy 2 weeks. Roch, this" player" doesn't need to be added to the roster until he reports or does he?

Ray said:

Poor Roch can't say it, but it's Josh Banks - it just makes sense because they just designated him for assignment. The problem with that from the Padres point of view is they have to clear 40 man roster space for Salazar. Of course they have a bunch of guy on the DL, so they may be able to shift someone to the 60 day DL to do that. But it's got to be Banks....

Dylan said:

I'm still waiting for Evan Longoria to arrive as the PTBNL in the Chad Bradford trade.

Joe Thatcher? He would fill a need, maybe.

Chris said:

I'm from san diego, it will probably be one of our pitchers, most likely Josh Banks who was recently DFA'd. Either that our Cla Merideth. If it is Cla Merideth congrats on getting a reliever who cannot pitch with runners on base. He was allowed 70%+ of inherited runners to score. I hope it is him.

Megan said:

They're stupid for trading Oscar Salazar ... Way to go ... But I'm thinking they won't activate this other player until after hernandez's start tomorrow. Could that be an option?

brion said:

Is it Luis Perdomo?

Kevin said:

Trading for Josh Banks makes no sense whatsoever. Wasn't the whole point of this trade to free up space on the 25-man roster for David Hernandez? If Josh Banks is out of options we still have the same issue as before the trade, but our 25-man roster is now minus one decent hitter off the bench and plus one mediocre-at-best pitcher. Hopefully it's not him.

At first I was cool with it being Chase Headley since the team is likely going to need help at the corner IF positions, and for whatever reason I thought he played those positions. But then I checked and saw that Headley is mostly an OFer. I'm confused.

If we're trading Salazar for someone that has to stay on the 25-man roster the only way this makes sense is if it's a player who fills a need for our team and makes us better than we were with Salazar. In the case of Banks and Meredith, I don't see how either player does that. Even Headley is a toss-up. I guess I'll wait for more information before speculating myself in circles.

does cla merideth know that hes missing a letter in his name?

Rob said:

Its whatever. Salazar had to go and we needed relief help so im ok with who ever it is. The thing for me is these days I would rather cut Baez or Hill to free up space for people being called up.
