Bergesen denied
| | Comments (49)

Former Orioles pitcher Scott Erickson, a sinkerball specialist, used to explain away his poor outings by reminding us that he could make batters hit the ball on the ground, but he couldn't direct where it goes.

Closer George Sherrill induced a ground ball from pinch-hitter Rocco Baldelli with two outs and the bases loaded. It scooted up the middle, past diving shortstop Robert Andino and into center field, allowing two runs to score and the Red Sox to tie the game, 5-5.

Rookie Brad Bergesen has been cheated out of a much-deserved win.

Sherrill walked J.D. Drew to reload the bases, and Danys Baez has replaced him. Sherrill struck out the first two batters he faced, but he allowed a single, two walks, a single and another walk.

Before everyone dumps on Sherrill, Jim Johnson began the inning by issuing a walk and serving up a two-run homer to Kevin Youkilis. A four-run lead was down to two.

Well, at least we are the home team and our offense can decide the fate of the game. Hopefully they come through in the clutch.

Bub said:

That ground ball bounced four times. There is no way it should have gone through the infield. This is major league baseball.

karsten said:

Wow. I really wanted Bergy to get a chance for the complete game. It was his to earn and he was up 5-1. Dave Trembley needs to stop with this automatic pull the trigger to the bullpen no matter what style. I hope we can salvage this game and get the win. Well pitched by Bergesen...

CB said:

Trembly should have let Bergesen finish the game. He constantly over uses the bullpen.

Jared said:

Roch,

Could you elaborate on what happened on that full count 'check swing'. I heard he swong and was going to be called out by the home plate ump if not for the appeal.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There wouldn't be an appeal if the plate umpire called him out. - Roch

Ron said:

I'll dump on both of them for giving up a combined four walks in a single inning. Professional pitchers? Please.

bms said:

JEEEEBUS.

Thanks at least Baez. NOW put this game away guys.

Steve said:

It's really a shame. Bergesen pitched so well. I'd be a little irked at the bullpen if I were him.

Steve said:

EPIC FAIL by the O's bullpen today!! Especially after the historic win yesterday. Hopefully, the bats will answer the call that the bullpen didn't.

bms said:

can your flippin negativity a$$hole_non_oriole. It's so eff'ing tired.

Why do they never make it easy on themselves?

kevin said:

why in the world does dave do this? 103 pitches for bergeson cruising through and they pull him, let him finish the game

skindooley said:

i wouldn't be so mad if this game fell apart because of hits, but all the walks are just unacceptable. Poor Bergeson. As a fan i'm near pulling my hair out over this idiotic fall apart, he must be bummed.

michele said:

ridiculous.. Bergy shuld have been allowed to finish the game. complete bull crap.. id rather see him give up those runs than see our set up and closer blow a 4 run lead!!! geeze.. gimme a break.. we need to somethin bc im listenin on the radio at work right now and i cant believe how loud all the sox fans are. shut em up n send em home!

christian said:

I really was pulling and think Bergy should have been given the chance to win the complete game. Trembley just put the momentum back towards the Sox when he took out Bergy. and now we are facing a tough pitcher whose pretty much been striking out the side the last couple innings. Sigh.

Ray said:

Tou are exactly right Bub . . . . about the groundball by Baldelli. It was routine. Was Andino holding Wiggy's hand on that play???

terpfan said:

I think they both deserve to be dumped on. Throw strikes. If they were beaten by a bunch of hits, I would give credit to the opposing team. But both guys handed it to them with walks. Sherrill was one out away and fell apart. Awful.

Ray said:

It's now the battle of the bullpens and we've used our two best, although Baez looks like he has his best stuff today.

smc123 said:

i understand that it is definitely the bullpen's job to hold onto a four run lead, but it really bothers me that bergeson was not given the opportunity to finish the game. he was masterful today.

Bub said:

I have heard all of the propaganda about Andino, but he has to make that play.

Also, the check swing was a close call -- close enough that the home plate umpire should have gone for help before being asked by Zaun and Sherrill. When the home plate umpire delays like that, he's telling the base umpire that he thinks he has it right.

tybinsd said:

we got this...not worried here

Sam said:

Well, guess it was my bad for calling for JJ.... Don't think it was DT's fault though. He did the right thing, JJ and Sherrill just didn't come through as they usually have this year. Add my name to the "Bergesen deserved the win" chorus--great game. He'll win that one far more often than not. OK OK, so I'm stating the obvious....

drew said:

What the hell was Trembled thinking?

Steve said:

You can't blame this on Trembley.

There is no reason to think Johnson & Sherrill can't get three outs before surrendering four runs.

8 innings, 0 walks

9th inning, 4 walks

'nuff said.

Roch
Would you have taken Bergy out of the game. He deserved the win but he also deserved the complete game.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd need to know whether he was gassed. Maybe Trembley went to the mound with two outs in the eighth and he said he could get one more out, which he did. - Roch

David said:

You would risk a rookie starting pitcher's arm just to win a game in a season where you'd be lucky to finish 4th in your division? There's a reason you guys aren't a major league GM. Yes, it hurts to (possibly) lose this game this way. But 103 pitches is a lot, especially for a rookie arm. In 3 years if Bergesen is healthy and part of a rotation that reaches the playoffs, we'll look back and see these decisions as the right ones.

Ray said:

You can second quess all you want with this game, but I would have left JJ in to face at least one more batter to see if he could right himself. Sherrill had a tough inning last night(and that showed today) and JJ has been dominant.

Brummie_Oriole said:

I actually think Bergy should have come out when he did. He looked gased. Still, I guess he managed to hit the strike zone, unlike our pathetic bullpen.

A MacFail said:

I'll see your bad bullpen Boston & raise you two overrated stiffs....

Jason said:

This is not Jason C. But I don't like the body language I am seeing from the O's since the tie. Espcially Brian after his strikeout. I have a bad feeling about this Roch...

I think you should suspend the blogger for talking about the speed of the game from your blog for a week or pay a significant fine.

21 O's in a row, 7 perfect innings by the sox pitchers.

mark said:

Bad managing. We scored early but have been shut out. And now we hand the game over to the Red Sox and burn our bullpen out for a west coast road series we start tommorow. Man oh man. This is hard to take.

terpfan said:

I am not watching the game, so I don't know how Bergey looked at the end of the8th, but I saw some posts on here calling for relief pitching given the pitch count and now see people complaining that Bergey was pulled. I think it's hard to fault the manager for putting JJ and Sherrill in. Those guys have been lights out, but neither did their job today. I guess that's going to happen at times, but that doesn't make it any easier to take, particularly since they walked so many guys instead of just getting hit. It's easy to second guess pulling Bergey now.

This is the kind of game we usually lose, but I sure hope we find a way to pull it out. Come on Baez. Need a stike out.

O's Fan in Nebraska said:

I was one of the people who figured JJ was in for the 9th. Bergy was at 103 pitches and this is where Johnson/Sherrill are suppose to get the outs and win the game.

I believe it was the correct move by Trembley, but the guys did not do their job and get three outs before allowing 4 runs...

Canada Day Massacre.

Charles said:

Well, we got a win yesterday that we shouldn't have and it looks like we will get a loss today that we should have won. Funny how baseball works. Plus this game reminds me a lot of that Mother's day game in Fenway when Guthrie threw a gem and I think we were winning that one 5-1 in the ninth only to blow it. This sucks.....

Shaun said:

Sam

sherrill and johnson shouldnt have pitched. DT is totally at fault taking out Bergeson. The sox must have been drooling knowing they didnt have to hit off him again today. ALL DTs FAULT!!!!!!

bms said:

Let's see if Nick has anymore RBI's in him today, please I hope he does.

Headmaster Roch,

Pedroia's out-of-glove tag reminded me of a question that recently rattled around lonesomely in my brain: can a

force out be made if the fielder tags a base with an empty glove while holding the ball in throwing hand?

I am seriously displeased that the answer is not obvious to me; I was trying to relate it to a force out when the fielder merely has to step on the base. Help.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You related it correctly. It's different, though, if you're tagging the runner. - Roch

bms - It's too bad that you have to make negative comments towards another O's fan when they're just stating the truth. By the way, I attended the game last night and stayed after the rain delay when a lot of people left because I'm a real O's fan. Nuff said!

Balmer said:

Hey Roch

It seemed like after they got the four run lead the offense went into cruise control and started swinging at alot of first pitches instead of trying to work the count.

On that bloop hit that fell about five foot in front of Pie in the ninth, it looked like he was just jogging towards it. IMO, it looked like a catchable ball if he were running full speed.

You can bet your tuchus if this game was in Fenway Park and an Orioles hitter were at the plate in the ninth that 1B umpire would've rung him up in a heartbeat on that checkswing (Varitek) to end the game.

J said:

C'mon Trembley how can you let Pie bat in the bottom of the 11th trailing by 1 run - The bench is stacked with batters today! I may be jumping on the get a new manager bandwagon if the O's drop this game today, this move is the last straw!

lefty said:

I have had enough of automatic Dave and his manage to lose style. To Brummie and others who thought Bergeson looked gassed I ask based on what? Eight innings ,no walks, and 103 pitches are not indicative of someone struggling against the best team in baseball. He had allowed only 4 hits and had thoroughly dominated a great team. More importantly when Trembley came out with 2 outs in the eighth and JD Drew up, he clearly wanted to stay in and got the third out with one pitch. As your closer had a tough ninth yesterday he should have been allowed to try to finish the game. This team will never get better until better decisions are made from the dugout...FIRE TREMBLEY NOW......

nebraska_jeff said:

David - 103 pitches is not a lot of pitches. 120 - 130 is a lot of pitches. Unfortunately these pitchers are being created not to go far above 100 in the minors. If they went 120 pitches on a regular basis they wouldn't get hurt. Their arms would be conditioned.

The real travesity in this game is no tack on runs after the Wiggington homer.

I get on other baseball sites.. The other team bloggers talk about Trembley as a terrible manager!! That Angelos is too cheap to get a real manager!! And that the orioles will never be better than a cellar dweller!!
Because they wont spend money!! But anyway-- does any one think that Sherrill is a real closer!! Seems like he blows more saves than the norm!! HE DEFINITELY ISNT A SURE THING!!! Also, he made a statement after the game about being on a winning team THAT HE HAS NEVER BEEN ON ONE AND then he blows the game. Wonder why??? At least boston will be at least 2 games ahead of the money bags yanks!! (I have to look at something positive)
