Calling All-Stars

The Major League All-Star game, set in St. Louis on Tuesday July 14, is still more than a week away and we don't know who from the Nationals will be selected, but we do know who will represent the organization in the Triple-A and Double-A games.

Second baseman Seth Bynum, right-hander J.D. Martin and outfielder Jorge Padilla were named Triple-A International League All-Stars. The game will be played on July 15 at PGE Park, home of the Portland Beavers (Padres), and can be seen live on ESPN2 at 10:00 p.m. ET.

Bynum is batting .250 with 12 homers, 14 doubles, two triples, 41 RBI, 33 runs and four stolen bases this season. He will be the starting second baseman.

Bynum signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Montreal Expos on May 28, 2004.

Padilla sports a .365 average with two home runs, 12 RBI, 42 runs and eight stolen bases in 66 games in 2009. He's batting .450 during his current 10-game hit streak with six multi-hit games during that span.

Padilla signed as a Minor League free agent by the Nationals on November 27, 2007.

Martin is 8-2 with a stellar 2.25 ERA and 58 strike outs 14 games, 13 starts. He has allowed two runs or less in 10 of those 13 starting assignments.

Martin has issued just seven walks in 76 innings of work, an average of 0.82 walks per nine innings. He leads the league with an 8.2 strikeout-to-walk ratio and ranks among the International League leaders in WHIP (2nd, 0.89), wins (t-2nd) and ERA (3rd).

Martin signed with Washington as a minor-league free agent, November 24, 2008.

Infielder/outfielder Leonard Davis, left-hander Jack Spradlin, and right-hander Josh Wilkie from Double-A Harrisburg are 2009 Southern Division Eastern League All-Stars.

The game is at 7:05pm on Wednesday, July 15 at Mercer County Waterfront Park in Trenton, NJ.

Davis is in his first full season with the Senators, after having spent ten days with Harrisburg in 2008. Through June 30, he is batting .285 with 11 HR and 38 RBIs, which leads the team.

Davis was selected in the eighth round of the 2004 draft by the Expos. He was the 2008 Nationals Minor League Player of the Year, playing at three different levels.

This is the second time he has been a mid-season all-star as he was a mid-season all-star for Hagerstown in 2007.

Spradlin is the reigning Eastern League pitcher of the week and has put together a fabulous season out of the bullpen for the Sens.

He is 4-1 with three saves and a 2.22 ERA. He has not given up a run in his last 13 1/3 innings of work.

Spradlin has allowed runs in just six of his 26 outings. Over his last 15 outings, 25 1/3 innings, he has a 0.64 ERA. He has pitched three innings or more in four different games this year. He has inherited 18 runners this season but none have scored.

The Nationals selected Spradlin in the eighth round of the 2007 draft.

Wilkie has been outstanding out of the pen for the Sens this year. He is 5-1 with a save and a 2.68 ERA. In 40 1/3 innings, he has struck out 33 and walked just 12. He is currently on a 9 1/3 inning scoreless streak, dating back to June 14.

Wilkie was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Nationals on June 14, 2006. He played his collegiate baseball at George Washington University. In 2007 he had the best change-up in the South Atlantic League according to Baseball America's "Best Tools" survey.
