End of An Era

It's official, the mighty talk station that changed radio around the country is being laid to rest: WJFK 106.7 FM becomes 106.7 The Fan at 6 am Monday morning.

The Junkies, now The Sports Junkies once again, kick off a new sports station in the DC metro area that hopes to change sports talk the way WJFK created and popularized FM hot talk.

As one of the Junkies and somebody who's worked at WJFK for 11 of the last 13 years, it's been an amazing ride and a privilege to be on such an important station. As a kid I listened to the Don and Mike Show when they were a morning zoo program on WAVA 105.1. When WAVA changed ownership and Don and Mike left the station, my radio world was turned upside down. I used to listen every morning on the way to DeMatha High School in Hyattsville. I was a freshman at the University of MD when I remember finally checking out this Howard Stern Show that everybody was talking about. I remember Don and Mike bickering with the Stern show when they were on WAVA. But when Don and Mike moved to afternoons on WJFK, guess who was anchoring mornings from New York City? That's right- Howard Stern.

Howard-Stern.jpg

It took me a while to get used to the vibe and the flow of the Stern show. I knew nothing about the woman known as Robin laughing and prodding this outrageous voice in the morning. Stern pushed the envelope and introduced me to vibrating speakers, strippers and porn stars. He made fun of celebrities and claimed to be the king of morning radio. I wanted to hate him as a Don and Mike fan, but I grew to love him and all the characters on that show. Fred, Gary, Jackie, Stuttering John, Billy West and many others became a part of my radio family. It turned out I loved the Stern Show and the Don and Mike show. What a great concept. Morning drive talent in the morning and afternoons. And all on the FM dial, in stereo! How great was that!

Suddenly I found myself listening to the midday show that linked Stern and Don and Mike. Who was this character G. Gordon Liddy? He can kill you with a pencil? Wasn't he a crook? What did he have to do with Watergate? Whatever topic that came about, Liddy seemed to have an expert opinion. He loved to comment on politics, guns, automobiles, motorcycles, small business. You name it and he was the expert. It was a different show than Stern or Don and Mike but it worked. WJFK went from being a jazz station that was barely noticed to a hot talk station that had radio stations around the country envious. They even added former DC radio star, the Greaseman, to evenings. At that point they had three morning drive shows spread out throughout the day and a killer midday show that was syndicated around the country. WJFK was rocking and there was no music.

Weekends eventually ditched the last remnants of jazz and replaced it with the sports weekend. WJFK had obtained the rights to broadcast the Redskins on Sunday and wanted to support the Skins with sports programming on the weekend. That's when they contacted a little cable access show in Bowie, The Sports Junkies. We were asked if we ever thought of working in radio? We jumped at the opportunity and did a demo for Jeremy Coleman and Jim McClure. They said it didn't suck and before you know it we were broadcasting on the mighty JFK on weekends with only the promise of being able to come back for one more week. Week after week we kept getting invited back until we were asked, almost a year later, to replace the Greasman at night. What an opportunity!

Eventually we had the good fortune to broadcast nationally from WJFK through our syndicator Westwood One for three years to cities like New York City, San Francisco, Houston, Tampa, Detroit, Minneapolis, Kansas City and many others. It was an incredible experience. We waited in the hallways of JFK and threw the football between the sales cubicles as Don and Mike wrapped up their hit afternoon show and then raced out of the studios within seconds of signing off.

JP-Flaim_Jason-Bishop_Eric-Bickel.jpg

Eventually WJFK introduced the DC audience to the smash afternoon show that was tearing up New York City, the Opie and Anthony Show. After some lineup juggling, at one point WJFK had what in my opinion was the most powerful, dynamic and popular talk lineup in history. Howard Stern in the morning, Don and Mike middays, Opie and Anthony in afternoons, and the Sports Junkies at night.

I don't think terrestrial radio will ever see a lineup like that at one time from one station. All four shows were ratings killers with a history of national syndication success.

But after a few radio stunts gone bad and an absurd reaction to a wardrobe malfunction with Janet Jackson, radio would never be the same. Stern eventually had to move onto satellite radio to get away from the hounding and tinkering of the FCC. Opie and Anthony had to sit out various suspensions and forced vacations. Don's beautiful wife Freda was killed in a traffic tragedy in Ocean City, MD. Arbitron changed the way ratings were tabulated and finally the economy hit the skids in the worst way since the Great Depression. It was a calvalcade of tumultous events that were the perfect recipe to kill the great genre that was FM hot talk.

And after fighting the good fight as long as it could, WJFK was forced to look into the future with a different format. Gone are the days of shocking people with strip trivia, lesbian dial-a-date or having interns do ridiculous things with sex toys. Consequently, great shows like the Big O and Dukes show, and the Mike Omeara show now have to step aside for the next big thing: FM Sports Talk is all the rage. Already in Detroit and Dallas new FM Sports talkers are crushing the competition. I fully expect that to happen here with The Fan 106.7 in DC. WBCN in Boston is flipping it's legendary rock station WBCN to sports. It's a new day.

So as I am sad to close the chapter on the greatness that once walked the hallways of WJFK in Fairfax I am also eager to explore the future with the new lineup at The Fan. We, the Sports Junkies, will once again be anchoring the mornings. Hopefully many of you will venture over to 106.7 and check us out. Our new midday show will feature Washington Post Columnist Mike Wise and Bill Rohland. Afternoons will be hosted by former Redskin Pro Bowler LaVar Arrington with our good pal Chad Dukes. Eventually we'll add more live and local programming in the evenings. The Fan will be the radio home of the Washington Wizards and the NFL. Hopefully we will continue our relationship with the Maryland Terrapins and the Washington Capitals. It's an exciting time. The station moves from a legendary talk station that capitalized on the popularity of it's creative, bombastic and entertaining hosts to a station that now caters to you the fan.

While we all will miss what WJFK once was - help us make the transition to the next big thing. Goodbye WJFK, we will miss you. But Hello The Fan. Let's make 106.7 the leader in sports talk as it was in hot talk. Come along with us for the ride!

Well said, Bickel!

I'll listen to the new station and support the shows just as much as I have before. But corporate/CBS/whoever you want to blame destroyed the last great radio station in the country. You gus, Big O & Dukes and Mike were all unbelievably talented shows and it's a shame they never fully got the respect they deserved.

Listening to Dukes last night, when he apologized for letting JFK fall under his watch, was maybe the most wrenching radio I have ever listened to in my life. I was saddened to hear JFK was flipping formats, but when he started crying, I could help but cry. Stearn, you guys, D&M, O&A, Ron and Fez, Big O & Dukes, f'ing Ferrell for God's sakes! -- some of the best radio ever heard by man had been heard on this station.

I'll never forget it. And while I hope everyone succeeds in the new format, I'm not gonna lie when I say there's a hope in me that Danny Snyder buys WJFK from CBS and you guys, Big O & Dukes, and Mike pop up at a new station. Now, that would be money!

Wow, E.B. that was incredibly well written and full of substance. I am also sad to see the format flip but I will still be listening.

Your just saying this because your a company man. I love your show and I'm very glad that it's not changing but what about the other show's? Every month we would here about how great the ratings were and then cbs goes and changes format's. What was the point of telling us to spread the word if some of our favorite shows were going to get canned anyway? I know you guys were at one time The Sport Junkies but how much sports do you really watch now Bickel? As far as I can tell you watch the NFL and that's pretty much it. Big O and Dukes didn't deserve what they got. There show is over. At least Mike O'mera and his crew will rise again. I know you don't truly feel like sports talk will do well in this town. I'm sorry but cbs has sealed your fate....

It was really time for O'Meara to go. I used to listen to Don & Mike in the early 90's before I moved to Arizona. Then a few years ago I found you guys again on the stream and on podcasts. So I thought I'd check out Don & Mike, since I liked them 15 years ago. THEY WERE DOING THE SAME SHIT THEY DID 15 YEARS AGO! Honk for Cash, the I love you at the drive through game, Mike's Floyd the Barber and Elvis impressions. How lame! You really can't think there are many people listening who even know who Floyd the Barber are anymore can you? They were stuck in a timewarp. In fairness I didn't listen to Mike after Don left - I assume its just more of the same tired, recycled stuff.
Welcome back to the Sports Junkies!

At 7:00am this morning I turned on the radio on my way to the methadone clinic (You probably don't remember, but I called in saying I was on Heroin for fifteen years, and now the methadone is killing me), it's a drive I make everyday, except Sunday. (From Fairfax to Kensington and back), anyway, this morning I almost fell asleep at the wheel!!!!!!! Sports radio is BORING!!!! In fact, I don't really like sports at all (I can still throw a spiral better than BDK!)anyway, the junkies have become my favorite show!(Way better than the hyena). I have listened to WJFK since the Liddy days you were talking about in this blog. 106.7 has been my #1 station since way back then. This last line up was the best one WJFK has had since Stern left. Especially, when they started the nightly replays. They finally got it right!!! And you know as well as I do, it took a while. They get the best line up they've had and they destroy it!!!!WTF???!!!! Except for 5-10am, I think I am going to have to bail on `THE FAN!' (I've had a twitter account for a while, and today were my first three tweets. They basically say the same thing as this does.)Well, good luck junkies, I hope you guys make it, you are the best in my eyes.
Thanks for letting me ramble,

Eric,
I love the junks and will always listen. I was a huge fan of O & D and am sad they are done. I am not sure how this station will hang. I love sports, but if you listen all day like I DID on wjfk, then you will get the same bs over and over. There is only so much to talk about when the redskins lose to the damn rams again. I hope the Lavar show does alright, but then again I hope it doesn't. Someone needs to pick up O & D. Those guys were on the right track.
Good Luck

EB, you obviously love radio as much as many of your listeners. It's not just about chatter or music or whacky bits or whatever, it's about personalities who are kind of your pocket friends.. always there during drivetime or lunch or whenever you need to feel like you're connected to humanity somehow. It's amazing how you can work in an office full of people and feel absolutely no connection to most of them, but listen to the radio and hear people talking about things YOU are interested in and suddenly you don't feel so disconnected.

Hell, you don't even have to agree with what's being said or even LIKE the personalities to still enjoy the program in general.

When I was in elementary school I stumbled across Greaseman and Howard Stern. For ages I listened to Don & Mike and discovered the Junks on after D&M in the late 90's when I'd make that 1+ hour drive home late some nights. I've listened to Liddy, Ron & Fez, Big O and Dukes I think I discovered as a 2 hour Sunday night show or something. Somehow shows like Elliott and Kirk Mark and Lopez (jesus.. why did they lure them away from 98 Rock???) just don't have the same .. whatever it is.. that ALL these other shows have. There's just no heart and soul. Something.

I'll keep listening to the Junks... I'm a computer nerd, not a big sports person, but I'll put up with it for the fun banter, entertainment news, quick little jaunts back to growling up in a similar era (I think one of the first times I listened, you guys were talking sports AND 80's video games.. I was hooked immediate..hah such scope of discussion).

I don't know if I'll be able to deal with the new midday or even the new afternoon setup. I think Dukes is a jackass, but he's always entertaining. If he's playing second fiddle and if he's going to be more sports centric and not able to just rave out about random stuff, then it's just not going to be the same.

I'm looking at investing in an HD radio so I can catch HFS2 on 94.7 HD2 and will probably reacquaint myself with music after 10+ years of talk radio addiction. 103.1 WRNR, which I usually listened to outside the hours of 6am-7pm Mon-Fri will get more of my attention. They're a great radio station (studio in Annapolis, transmitter on the eastern shore).

As for Dukes' final message. Very touching. I'm really surprised O was able to hold it together during that (such a professional.. I'm really going to miss him). What I took from the emotional breakdown and what Dukes said wasn't that he let the flip happen... nobody can blame him for that, not even himself, but he said something about not having the strength.... reading between the lines, it really sounded like he wanted to say a big "F YOU!" to CBS Radio, but he couldn't deal with losing his job and they offered him something great. That he'd love to stick it to the man and show solidarity for his brothers, but he didn't have the strength to fight that fight and take the high ground. Noble, but ultimately I think unnecessary. The Junks seem to be fine. The crew of the Mike O'Meara show seem to be ok with things. Big O seems to be not left out on the street, so I think everything's ok. Who gets screwed are the fans.

Nobody blames any of you guys. I think we all wish all of you the best of luck with the new change. It sounds like it's going to be ratings gold and save the radio station a bunch of cash.

Mark said:

I will listen to the Junkies on the Fan. However, the station is doomed to fail in the new sports format. You guys will still kill in the ratings, I'm sure. But Mike Wise, Bill Rohland, and Lavar Arrington can absolutely KICK ROCKS as far as I'm concerned. Arrington, especially, is a freaking turncoat and I absolutely can not wait until he reminds DC once again what a Prima Donna he is.

I feel bad for Dukes to some extent. He really has no choice other than to accept the job security that comes with taking this new, soulless, job with Lavar. On the other hand, however, he knows he is guilty of letting down the man (Oscar) and the audience (BOAD fans)that delivered him to the point where he could land this new gig.

Bottom line is: you guys will always have a show and you will always be paid well, because you are so versatile and the sports thing falls right into your wheelhouse. Dukes should already be preparing to reunite with Oscar some day (I would get Satellite Radio just to hear BOAD again), because The Lavar Arrington Show will fail. I just hope Oscar doesn't become DC's biggest DJ too quickly (because, yea, I think his immediate future is actually much brighter than Chad's) and Oscar decides to take Chad back. I really don't know if I would...

Hey EB. I live in the s***hole that is Philadelphia (Killadelphia, actually) and i found WJFK to have THE BEST lineup in the country. I set my alarm clock to wake me at 6am every weekday so i could stream The Junkies and i'd listen at work for the next 13 hours via Nobex radio companion on my Blackberry. I cant believe they've switched formats to sports, i really cant. I'm devestated. There is no way I'll be able to listen to 13 straight hours of sports a day (i wouldnt do that with the local Philly sports station either!) Im still going to listen to The Junkies as long as you guys dont change your show to all sports all the time. I still need to hear you go nuclear on JP, hear about Cake's sexual triumphs and Lurch's nonexistent sex life and King Status in Ashburn. Oh, and Bret p**ing on girls.

I really love you guys, you make my miserable day bareable. Without Big O and D though i may not survive the rest of the day, i openly wept in my crappy cubicle at work on Friday when Chad started crying, it was terrible. PLEASE dont change the format of your show, its perfect the way it is. F the suits.

Dave said:

Welcome another step in the Walmartization of America. It's no longer about trying to do something unique, for the pride of doing it and making an honest living. Now it's all about maximizing profit margins. You can get anything at Walmart, you're just going to get a s****y version of it. Now we have s****y cookie cutter radio. The junkies will always be the junkies, but i can tell a significant shift in your guys show over the last month or so to be more sports oriented, and i wasn't that thrilled with it.

I'm sorry, but I won't support it. I wont be another mindless troll who supports the watering down of everything great in this country. WHFS is gone, CBGB is gone, now WJFK too? Pretend like you're happy about it Bickel, but i know none of you are. You just need your paychecks, and i respect that.

I am not a Fan of constant sports talk radio. I listened to JFK from 6am until 7pm as much as I could. This will not be the case now. I will have to find something else to listen to. Good luck to all personalities of the greatest station ever but, you have lost 4 listeners in my family alone. Looking forward to Mike and others on another station. Chad, the meaning was understood of your final message and I hope you and O will find a home somewhere soon---great show!!! Miss you all already.

Somehow, EB, despite all of his on-air bombast still manages to be the most meaningful blogger out of the four. Lurch and JP write about themselves, Cakes' takes just don't translate from the yellow note pad, but EB gives us a peek behind the scenes and helps us understand what is really going on.

I'm a huge fan of the Junks, and I'm sure that I'll be tuning in for Mike Wise and LaVar, though, I'm not sure that he won't want to kill Chad Dukes at some point sooner rather than later. Also, it would be great if they somehow stretched it a bit. I usually don't get in the car until after 6 in the evenings...what am I going to be listening to at that point?

Brian said:

Well, all I can say is that after the Junkies, I'm listening to Pandora. Sports 24/7 will get really boring really quick and I hope the fans of the old WJFK will respond accordingly. I think the other stations in the DC area are going to benefit from this change, because in my opinion, this new format sounds kind of lame. I love listening the Junkies and hope CBS realizes the mistake they made by getting rid of two great shows

I agree with Dave above. The commercialization continues. The corny ads, and new voices chaps my ass. After the junkies this crap turns to old man radio. I am a business man, I do understand the bottom line has to be black in color. Got to do what you got to do!

Nubbs Ricky said:

Wow, a well written and insightful blog. Hopefully the other Junkies will step up to this level in their blogging.

"Guy Talk" radio was dead the day Sirius hired Howard Stern. The demographic that listens to the kind of inane and often hilarious banter from Stern, Opie & Anthony, etc. is the same demographic that buys toys like sattelite radios.

How's Sirius stock doing?

The local airwaves will have the last laugh I predict, and you, with your sports banter, will end up above the fray. People love to talk sports no matter how the economy is doing, as a matter of fact, the worse the economy tanks the more people cling to sports as a fun distration from everyday life. The Sports Junkies will continue.

And I predict that your move to a Sports format will make your show better than ever. You'll have much of the sports interest of the early years with the high level of radio professionalism that you have achieved over the years of broadcast. I for one am looking forward to the change. Less porn talk and dumb bull-ess and more talk about all the local sports teams that I like to follow. Bring it on.

Mike K said:

Sports talk all day long is way too much for me.

I enjoy sports center in the background, Around the Horn and PTI but 24x7 sports talk radio is not my cup of tea.

Luckily I have satellite so I can get Stern after the Junks.

Oh goodie, Michael Vick talk during the Mike Wise show...can we beat a dead horse to death some more. Uggghhhh!!

Let's face it, the MAN has chosen to dump MOM show for $$. Let's hope he, Buzz (could do w/o Rob) lands elsewhere in 2010. As for going back to Sports Junkies -- let's hope you still do some of your better bits still. Whore or Bore, Donkey, Game Day, etc are all good stuff.

Day 1 I thought was mediocre but I know you are lining up guests. I expect Arrington will be a bust but I will give him a chance, there aren't many choices in the car. Via internet, I am elsewhere listening to better radio (bbc, pandora, etc) Good luck, you guys will survive for now. Just wait five years till you're all 40 and not in the right demo. Make sure you save the $$$ for that eventual day.

Lara said:

Agree on the new voices/intros being annoying.

Luckily for me that won't be a problem because once the Junkies finish up each morning, I'll go back to my iPod or a music radio station. I have less than zero interest in all-day sports rambling.

"What will happen to Jim Zorn and Jason Campbell" if the Redskins go 8-8 this season???" "What if the Redskins get off to the slow start that people are predicting?" How gripping! It's July!

Here's hoping that Mike O'Meara gets picked up on another station, at least. It'll be a while before the Arrington/Dukes combo fizzles out, and then maybe we'll get BOAD back again too.

Dave said:

wow, today was awful after the Junkies signed off. Seriously, they covered all the sports topics, in a tremendously entertaining fashion as usual. Mike Wise came off, rehashed the same s*** the junks just finished talking about, and then the Lavar show that poor Chad Dukes is CARRYING was awful. Someone teach Lavar English for the love of christ. Anytime Chad would get a decent roll on, Lavar would come in and just wreck it. I really enjoy Dukies, but i can't take that show. So looks like after 10am it's no 106.7 for me.

Will said:

I tried it guys....I listened all day and I have to tell you it was a monumental failure. Strike that, it sucked! The junks were ok, but without the usual antics and with too much focus on sports, it was just like most other shows out there in the morning, boring and contrived. I am sorry to say that CBS killed the Junks! The biggest disappointment, however has to be what they did to Big O and Dukes. The previous poster was right, the last show was heart wrenching and it was clear today that Chad will clearly have to carry the show (what the hell was that Rocky impression we all had to suffer through?). I am sorry fellas, I have been an avid listener since I was in College Park in the early 90's, but this pretty much signals the end. Leave the junks to format their own show and bring back O&D and you got one more listener, 'til then, peace!

Now we all know your in this strictly for the paycheck and definitely not us your audience. Chads new show is so bad I can't even listen to it, looks like he sold out Oscar for his own back pocket like you boys did to us! At the end of the day its a job, and I'm sure he would do whatever it takes to make sure his family is financially safe just as the boys are. To be honest with you, it really hasn't seemed like the show has changed that much at all. People act like the format change is making them talk sports a lot more but in reality the NFL is about to start so the sports talk would of increased had the station stuck to the original format. Some people just don't deal well with change, get over it.

Haven't listened to 106.7 after 10 am since Monday, tried but just too boring. This station might kill the junkies. Hope not, they are still my #1. Good luck.

I love how they claim the show won't change, but it's obvious how much corporate sucking up is going on during the show. It's awful. Stop trying so hard to impress the new suits boys, just be yourselves!

And poor Chad. My God. Words can't even express how he's likely feeling right now, sharing airtime with Lavar. Lavar shticks it up every second of the show and I can imagine Chad just wanting to hang himself. So awful.

But hey Chad, you've been down this road before - remember "The Ed Norris show with Big O and Dukes"? Yeah, it used to be the Big O and Dukes show. Looks like we're going down that same road. Only a matter of time before Lavar is comfy enough on-air and you're no longer needed. Sad but true. And it will suck.

Anyway, even sports fans like myself don't want sports talk 24/7. F that. How much sports can you talk about between all of these shows? Nice work CBS. Die.

perfect summary - it was tough reading the first paragraph with that ugly mug staring me in the face, but once i got past that portion i was so moved i had to fight back a creeper - i was a don and mike fan during the wava days and a stern fan, but when the junks went to mornings on 99.1 i was all-in!! - i hope the flip to the fan helps with the new ratings system - i also hope you don't fill up the air time w/ d-bags that pitch a tent to hear themselves talking on the radio machine about how the nats are going to get to 60 wins!! - love sports shows, just not the locals that think they should be a gm - keep doing what your doing, the junks are the only thing keeping me from a shooting spree during my daily commutes!!
