Felix the catalyst (with instant update)
| | Comments (8)

After checking the replay, I'm still not convinced that Felix Pie was out at second base, but another Oriole has made an overly aggressive mistake on the basepaths.

However, Pie's single gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead after Brian Roberts walked and stole second. That's taking the good with the bad.

Pie has seven hits in his last 13 at-bats. He began today batting .333 over his last 26 games.

Good for Pie, and the Orioles, if he's settling into his role as a fourth outfielder and backup to Adam Jones. Somebody has to do it.

That's a bit of a decline from the five-tool expectations laid upon him by so many scouts and executives, but the Orioles will gladly accept what they're getting from him at the moment.

He just needs to settle for a single and not try to take the extra base, advice that applies to everyone on this team.

Does every player in this clubhouse have a doubles clause in his contract?

Instant update: Luke Scott's 418-foot home run in the second inning increased the Orioles' lead to 2-0. He hadn't homered since June 11.

Are you saying he might have been safe because it was close, or because Pedroia had the ball in his hand not his glove (I'm at work and can't see it, but that's what I heard happened).

Actually, both. - Roch

Roch,

I agree, I don't believe Felix was out. It looked like the ball was in Pedroia's non-gloved hand and he tagged Pie with his (empty) glove. I like the agressiveness from Pie.

Go O's

Wow. Luke really does just OWN Beckett...

I am sure Pie will be vilified. Certain posters have resorted to criticizing when he nearly, but doesn't, make a mistake and minimizing the good things he does (like criticizing the distance of his outfield assist last night). Hard to argue that the guy hit .450+ in June and started July with a single and an RBI off one of the best pitchers in baseball. I am confident, however, that some will try. Go back to your holes. Go O's.

MASN's HD is garbage. Comcast is telling me MASN's signal is usually weak which is causing me to see pixels & sound interruptions.

Thanks Peter !

Roch,

Nice Felix the Cat reference... took me a while to catch that one haha.. I always wonder how long it takes you to come up with the titles of your blog entries.

I joked with the guy next to me that I spend more time on the titles than the actual entries. Joking, of course! - Roch

Do you think Trembley will get fined for his in-game remarks about the umpiring?

What did he say? - Roch

I'm perfectly fine with a speedy player like Pie getting thrown out trying to stretch a single to a double. That is a good aggressive play with a bad result. The O's won't get better if they are playing scared to make mistakes. There is a HUGE difference between Pie and Huff making that attempt.
