Hill likely to undergo surgery
Orioles pitcher Rich Hill is leaning toward undergoing surgery on his left shoulder after an arthrogram and MRI revealed a displaced labrum tear.
The Orioles have recommended that Hill get a second opinion, but he's likely to have the surgery and endure a six-to-eight month recovery period.
Hill said doctors could insert anchors in the shoulder to repair the tear.
"It's something that's obviously serious," he said. "However, the percentages are looking very good in my favor for being able to come back and compete and be successful like I was in the past."
Hill estimated that he was less than 50 percent physically while trying to pitch with the injury.
"Now I have answers and a clear direction of where I want to go to get this fixed," he said.
Hill was relieved that the arthrogram, where dye is injected into the shoulder, didn't reveal any problems with his rotator cuff.
"I've played with guys who had the same surgery and came back successfully," he said. "I think this is something that's been ongoing. I'm sure some guys can go out there and pitch with this problem in their shoulder. They're able to go out and continue to perform. But I really believe if I get this fixed, I can get back to where I was and be competitive again. At least I have peace of mind."
Meanwhile, Dennis Sarfate is scheduled to throw one inning on Aug. 3, 5, 8, 11 and 13 at Triple-A Norfolk.
Coming up: An update on Brad Bergesen. And this time, I mean it.

Come on Roch I was hoping for Bergy not this bum... I still red it though, sounds like Hill could be a doctor he found his injury out by himself.
At the risk of sounding like a troll, I have to ask: when Rich Hill says "...the percentages are looking very good in my favor for being able to come back and compete and be successful like I was in the past", is he talking successful like he was in 2007? Or "successful" like he was in 2009? I wish him well. At the very least there is no way the Orioles are counting on him for 2010. What is his contract status, by the way?
So he did all that instead of getting it fixed and now he's hurt so he can't be dropped. that is so convenient.
im glad he finally got an answer to his problem but whats frustrating to me is that he obviously knew something was wrong earlier in the year and kept insisting he was fine. if he had only admitted that he wasnt feeling healthy who knows what would have been different.
Roch,
Two questions:
1) Do you think that the team will be willing to spend the 500K on Hill's salary next year in order to see whether he can come back?
2) Is it possible that Mora was asked to waive his no trade clause and said no? I find the timing of this decision to be intriguing.

I don't have a firm answer for either question, unfortunately. The Orioles didn't invest much in Hill and it would make sense to get him healthy and see if he can come back, but not if there's a roster crunch. I don't imagine there was enough interest in Mora to even ask about the no-trade clause. Sounds like it was pretty quiet on that front. - Roch
Wow, what a mess. I hope the Cubs do not expect a player in return for this disaster. Orioles received damaged goods. If they want a player, give them Rich Hill.
Just from Rich Hill's quotes, what's the ruling on this Roch? Assuming it's true that the Cubs knew of the injury and the O's did their due diligence, is there some sort of compensation? Because apparently the O's knew nothing of it and it didn't show up in the physical, assuming there was one. I realize we only gave up the player we got for Chad Bradford but it sure seems a bit unethical to me.

There was nothing shady going on here. The Orioles examined him. The tear might have gotten worse as the season progressed. We're still gathering all the facts. But I don't think the Orioles look at it as though the Cubs passed along damaged goods. And it was a very small cash transaction. - Roch
Do we have interest in keeping him thru the rehab process and seeing what he has? Are we going to wash our hands? Hill seems to like it here.

It's really too soon to know. - Roch
Man the guy did not pitch well but he was worth the chance based on his past. Who knows maybe the tear was the problem let him rehab and see what he has next year. After all the O's only gave up cash for him. Roch when a player returns from injury such as this how much time/starts etc does he have before they have to recall them?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Injury rehab assignments last 30 days for pitchers, 20 for position players. - Roch
Hill has stated that he knew for sometime that his labrum was injured and on the same note Trembley has stated that neither he or the med staff were aware of it. Why the discrepancy?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think Hill made it known how much it was bothering him. - Roch
Roch - When was it learned that Hill's price went from a PTBNL to cash considerations?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's always been a PTBNL or cash. I heard cash a while ago. The Sun recently mentioned it being a minimal amount. - Roch
And people thought he was a liar.

Just because your name is on the blog, do you really believe you can tell us that Angelos approved a trade that COSTS money instead of saving money when highly decorated and respected journalists with impeccable sources like Brummie, Jack and Boller all agree that no move is ever made by the orioles with any intent but saving money? You cant pull the wool over our eyes with these Woodward and Bernstein types lurking.
