Kam's the man (updated)
I've received confirmation that the Orioles will recall Kam Mickolio from Triple-A Norfolk as Chris Ray's replacement in the bullpen and the 25-man roster, matching what The Sun's Jeff Zrebiec has reported.
That makes two of us. Run with it.
Over his first six outings with Norfolk, Mickolio surrendered nine earned runs in 8 1/3 innings, giving him a 9.72 ERA. But he hasn't allowed an earned run in 18 of his last 21 appearances, posting a 1.08 ERA with 28 strikeouts and 15 hits allowed over that span.
Mickolio was 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA in nine games with the Orioles last season. He's part of the bounty obtained from the Mariners in the Erik Bedard trade.
Update: Ray's injury is classified as right biceps tendinitis.

Ok now how long til Chris Tilman gets the call?
Aren't they in Seattle to play 3? Of course they call up Mick to replace Ray, more salt in the wound for the Sea. management.... the only thing better would have been Tillman to start one of the games. :-)
I know he is a hard thrower but with that comes the lack of command. Rather have seen Miller.
So How long does it take for a player to get from the East Coast to the West Coast? I know they do it all the time but it isn't it a 10 hour plane ride if he left right away last night he would still be out of wack playing at 10:00 tonight.
Do you know when they send the guys they recall? do they tell them pack your stuff or hey get to the airport as fast as you can
Is Seattle's Gm still the same? What can we trade them??? I really like the way that turned out. The opposite of Glenn Davis???
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!
Roch, when you say you have received confirmation and then do not specify your sources are we ok to assume that your source on all things truthful about the Orioles has to be either Jack(off) or (Bumbling)Brummie?
Roch -- Understandable anxiety about the rest of the season...there's been a bit of drift (and bad luck, and space cadetry) after a 4th place run seemed within reach. May Wieters have been rushed a smidge (though he's clearly improving exponentially, esp. at the plate) in order to accomodate sentiments like yours (and mine)? I don't want (especially) a pitcher to be a "splash" but to be ready. I hope that, if Tillman is brought up, it is on the heels of the April-May type performance he had, dominating, efficient, etc., and not because we are otherwise hurting. I also hope the trade deadline may provide us a decent rent-a-starter for this purpose. One thing about players with options -- they can be sent down to learn more and build confidence again, as Hernandez seems to have done. I'd be less worried about giving Hill a LITTLE more time to work on some things if we didn't have Berken doing the same thing (which he should be doing in AAA -- because he can).
Lucky -- I heard that Cy Young has a disturbingly high WHIP, he's no good. :)
Many: The references to the Rays (and by extension Figgins and the Angels) being "slump-proof" re: speed is right on. While there are many questions about what Figgins is/would be worth (and I voted AGAINST him for the final All-Star ballot cause I don't want that on his price tag next year), the type of game he plays is impactful and keeps managers up nights. Having speedy players get every base (as opposed to aging veterans just giving it their foolish all), puts pressure on the pitchers and the defense. Boston especially ran all over us.
New town, new series. Rough up those M's!
Hey Roch - Ryan Freel got dealt to KC today. Just curious to get your thoughts on the matter. He was so unhappy here. I'm assuming he's not much happier now.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He had some health issues with the Cubs, and probably like the Orioles, they couldn't find ways to get him in the lineup. Without looking up his numbers, I'm guessing he wasn't very productive when he played. We've been told he's better suited for the NL. Going to the Royals might not be the solution. - Roch
A few more weeks and we could have FOUR players on the major league roster from the Eric Bedard trade. Unbelievable.
Refresh my memory Roch . . . what else did we get in that trade? Anyone any good? Anyone who might make an all star game some day? Anyone so good even the naysayers might someday be clamoring to bring up from the minors? And who was responsible for making that trade? Surely it must have been made because some player we had was holding out or lacked the "killer instinct" since our GM never initiates anything but only acts defensively or in a reactionary manner? I am sorry my mind is rusty and I cant remember this trade of which you speak but surely it was so insignificant and worked out so badly for the Orioles that it has slipped my mind. Or perhaps too many brain cells lost by reading certain posts on your blog that rot the brain as well as straining credulity.
~~That makes two of us. Run with it.~~
didnt your mother ever teach you not to run with scissors or confirmation? Or swim right after eating? Or that your face would stick like that if you keep making that face?
Any word on a Sherrill trade? Right now would be the time to do it.
Let's hope Mickolio does well and sticks with the big club.
He's got a good arm.
Also, thinking back to yesterday, Roch, it would be my guess as well that we will see Chris Tillman in Baltimore sometime around the All-Star break.
This opens of for speculation, of course.
I would prefer the following: allow Jason Berken to learn on the job and find his command (he's obviously got the stuff to be here) and give Rich Hill his outright release -- or -- what do they call it? -- "designate him for assignment"?
Somehow I feel that Andy MacPhail doesn't see it the same way. What are you're thoughts on this, Roch?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think the Orioles are ready to give up on Hill just yet. - Roch
This is just Andy trying to distract us from the team's problems by reminding us how awesome the Bedard trade was. The conspiracy continues!
I am sure the Mariners will appreciate having that trade rubbed in their face again this series with Jones making the AS team and hopefully Mickolio coming in this series to strike out the side.
Great!!!! Another building block! Thats what I hope. I hope that Kam is not talked about but is projected to be an automatic part of the O's bullpen plans for the next ten years. If he has solved his problem of throwing across his body, that he had last year, there is no reason he cant be an excellent part of the O's for a long time.
Roch-
Any chance the Os would just release Mora and give him a chance to hook on with another team for the rest of the year? It would seem he doesn't fit into plans for 2010, and would give the Os a lot more flexibility with Salazar, Wiggington, etc.....your thoughts?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another reader asked this question earlier. I can't imagine the Orioles just cutting him loose, but you could see the logic if he's not in their 2010 plans and they can't work out a trade, with Mora holding a blanket no-trade clause. And isn't he a 10-5 guy now? Anyway, I'd say the chances are less than 50-50, but that's just an educated guess. - Roch
To continue the slow day questions, if the O's sign the 16 year old Sano, do they get to hide him anywhere lets say until he is 18. I ask because it would appear that with a kid that young you could run through his minor league options years very quickly. Hate to sign him to the big money then lose him at 21 if he is not MLB ready.
You see Roch in this school, even the teacher gets asked questions?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure about "hiding" him. He could start out at the lowest level, the GCL, and move at whatever pace the organization deems appropriate. Have to say, I don't have a lot of experience covering this type of story - 16-year-old's from the Dominican who are hyped to this degree. - Roch
Tonight Adam Jones hits a go ahead homerun in the eighth, Kam pitches a scoreless eighth, Sherill pitches a scoreless ninth and gets a save
I am not surprised it is Mickolio I just hope Ray is not hurt badly....I have neevr seen a team that every year consistently has as many pitchers hurt or worthless as the O's...it is amazing and really does make you wonder if they are snake bit or something is missing in the training pregrams of the pitchers in the whole organization..that hardly seems possible the later but sure seems it is the same every season.
Brian - Seattle is a 5 hour flight, maybe 5 and a half.
Roch couldn't they have him play on thier teams down there this season? I don't think playing on the teams down there effects rule V draft eligability which is what StrawDog should be worried about at this point, not options.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not aware of any rules against it. - Roch

_____
You left out the part where Chris Tillman interrupts the game via the Jumbo-tron and sings karaoke. I believe he will be singing Billy Joel's 'Tell Her About It' (and who can blame him?)
Brian,
You must not get out much. It is a 5:40 flight from BWI to Seattle and 5:00 on the return flight (varies due to how the jetstream goes west to east).
10 hrs? That would give the term red-eye flight a whole new meaning. You could go from San Fran to Germany in about 10-11 hrs.
A move long overdue. Best of luck to Kam. Let's hope Trembly uses him properly and doesn't try something foolish like using him as a long man or "Jamie Walker Specialist".
That is some good for Ray..no surgery type injury...rest and meds and he will be OK down the road...GREAT NEWS as far as bad news goes.
In defense of Brian, I think planes fly slower in the minor leagues than they do in the majors.
ANDREW brought up Kam just to make himself look good for the Bedard trade. He knows Kam will do well, creating a smoke screen for the Kool Aid drinkers. ANDREW just wants this team to do well to make himself look good. Selfish ANDREW!
Harrisburg Steve.........
Jack's 3rd personality or the 3rd stooge?
Roch,
What did Kam do to turnaround his numbers so dramatically?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't heard anything specific. Maybe Trembley will address that subject later. - Roch
The problem with Freel is that he's not suited for pro baseball. He's just not that good.

Any rumblings of Adam Jones participating in the Home Run Derby next week?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No rumblings yet. - Roch
Roch,
Just curious, has anyone ever pointed to a full year in AAA as the downfall of a pitching prospect? Other than dealing with Rich Hill's ups and downs, where is the harm in ensuring our young arms are ready for the big leagues?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure there haven't been studies done that have proven it. It could benefit some pitchers, been pointless to others. - Roch
Phillygameday...I hope I read it correctly, but I thought Harrisburg Steve was being totally sarcastic...please tell me it was all tongue-in-cheek Hburg Steve.
Roch,
Remember in ST when you asked everyone to pick a player to have break out season? Kam was my pick. I liked how he got to camp early and seemed to be working hard to get in shape. Hopefully all his hard work is going to payoff
BTW how's is your pick, Hennessey doing? Haven't heard much about him. Is he going to pitch again this year?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He gone! - Roch
Man I totally forgot that Kam pitched in the majors for a few games last year... I'm assuming it was in September. I always try to forget that month.

Contract purchased Aug. 20, optioned the 25th, recalled Sept. 2. - Roch
I like the move. I like giving people chances. Let them control their own fate!
