John Lannan Visits PETCO
On Saturday morning, starter John Lannan was up early to meet and greet some four-legged Nats fans. Lannan, an animal lover, teamed up with the Washington Humane Society and PETCO to promote responsible pet ownership and encourage fans to adopt a pet. Lannan posed for pictures with pets and their owners, and signed autographs for fans, employees and volunteers.
Growing up, John's family had small, low-maintence pets like iguanas and gerbils, but never a dog, even though John really wanted one. "I didn't realize until now that it was a lot of work. It's a lot of responsibility," Lannan said at the event.
About a year ago, John bought a French bulldog-beagle mix and named her Bailey. He stopped at a pet store on a whim and instantly noticed her because she was quiet and calm. John obviously travels a lot during the season, so his parents help him take care of Bailey. "She's great. I love her and it kind of brought us closer together," he said.
Lannan also praised the work of the Humane Society, which does "a great job of finding homes for dogs that are neglected or left behind. I really appreciate what they are doing." Growing up, John's grandmother adopted a dog from a shelter -- the only dog he's ever really known.

Julie Conway, Chief Development Officer of the Washington Humane Society, is thrilled that Lannan is committed to their cause.
"Kids today need to have good role models in how to take care of dogs," she said. "It's cool to pet animals and not treat them in any way that you wouldn't treat another member of your family. If kids see pro athletes loving animals, they're going to love animals too."
At today's event, fans could visit with the Humane Society's mobile unit to meet several pets available for adoption. You can visit their website or any shelter in the region for more information about providing a home for a neglected animal.
Conway also thinks that Lannan sets a great example for kids and pet owners because he shares the responsibility of taking care of Bailey with his parents, since his schedule is so demanding. "I try my best to be a good owner," Lannan said.
"All animals are cute when they're puppies or kittens, but they require a lot of care," Conway continued. You have to commit to it, and it's for life. You don't just get a pet temporarily. They're part of your family."
