Matusz shines again
| | Comments (7)

Lefty Brian Matusz pitched yet another stellar game tonight. In game one of a doubleheader, he pitched a shutout as Bowie blanked Akron, 3-0, at Prince George's Stadium. It was a seven-inning game.

Matusz gave up just four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. He is now 3-0, 0.49 in three Baysox starts. In 18 1/3 innings he has given up just 1ER with six walks and 21 strikeouts.

In 14 starts on the year between Frederick and Bowie, Matusz is 7-2, 1.80 with 96 strikeouts in 85 innings.

Here is the amazing Matusz stat. Dating back to his last four starts with Frederick, Matusz has alllowed just one earned run over his last 41 1/3 innings. That's an ERA of 0.22.

Meanwhile, like their parent club yesterday, tonight, Triple-A Norfolk gave up four runs in the top of the 9th to lose 5-4 vs. Gwinnett. Bob McCrory was charged with four runs in 1/3 of an inning and Jim Miller suffered a blown save on the day he made the all-star team.

The good news was that Tides' starter Jake Arrieta gave up just one run and five hits over seven innings. He has allowed just 2ER over his last two starts and his ERA is now 2.92.

Frederick got great pitching tonight in a 2-0 win over Potomac as Nate Nery and Pat Egan teamed on a one-hitter. A fourth-inning infield single was the only hit Potomac picked up. Nery went six and Egan the final three frames. On the not great side, Billy Rowell went 0 for 4 as his average dipped to .229.

Steve- I know we have to be patient, but, when you have control or just plan dominating stuff (wildly effective) on the same staff, you just plain out win series's. When you go from control with Bergy and Matusz, to effectively a little wild with Arrieta and Tillman, the O's are going to have something really special.
I truly think that the O's would be JUST FINE RIGHT NOW with all 4 of them on the team. Ofcourse that will not happen, I just hope that Tillman and Arrieta will be there at some point this year and Matusz as soon as Spring Training.
What do you think? Does that ETA sound about right?

I don't see any of them coming up soon. Later in the year will depend on if the O's have openings on the big league club, how well they are pitching at that point and how many innings they've thrown. They won't get say a Sept callup if they have pitched a lot of innings. - Steve

If Matusz continues to put up these numbers the Orioles will be forced to promote him. He is too good to be in AA. I think he should be starting for us right now over Rich "I love the red sox" Hill. But hi I'm just a fan who wishes that Andy would put the best team on the field, Matusz would not have been the first guy to go from single A to the majors. He had one thing to work on and that was fastball command he got that and is unhittable.

Steve at this point if you could choose between Hill or Matusz

If I could have my dream rotation It would be

Bergessen
Arrieta
Matusz
Tillman
Guthrie

If we had that we would be a winning team

I predict that Matuz won't even go to Norfolk and come straight to the big club.My guess is Hill has about 3 more starts to get his act together and if he doesn't,they'll call up Matuz. This guy knows how to pitch and is major league ready. The only thing that could ruin him is Trembley and Kranny telling him to "put his curve in his back pocket."

The Orioles rushed Riley, Ponson, Cabrera, Maine, Liz and Olson and did nothing but hurt their development.

The kids should stay down there this year and develop their skills and stamina to go deeper into games. I think you'll see Tillman and maybe Arrieta make a strong bid for the rotation next spring. That's soon enough.

I think you are right. The old way doesn't work, how much more proof do we need. While fans can't wait to see these guys, if will be worth the wait if they move up and put up solid numbers in the Majors as well. - Steve

The way that things are progressing is methodical and has a master plan. We have seen too many pitchers rushed to the majors and then they have a few good years and that's it. I would prefer to bring them up slowly and after they have pitched in the minors for a bit. Granted they may have all of the stuff, but they are also learning how to deal with the whole baseball environment. They will be moving from city to city with a lot of media exposure.
I like the fact that we are seeing a great group of young talent coming together and I can finally seem a "team" developing from all of this. In years past it seemed like we had a bunch of players with maybe one or two young guys who came up. We also picked up some fringe free agents in years past.

I think the O's offense is set to strike and it will be there to support a young pitching staff.
