Nats drop eighth straight to Marlins; commit four errors
| | Comments (0)

The Nationals tied a season-high by committing four errors in their rain-shortened 7-5 loss to the Marlins, their eighth straight this season.

Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman booted one ball and threw two others away and right fielder Josh Willingham dropped a routine pop foul, allowing Florida to score four unearned runs.

Zimmerman was charged with two errors on one play, leading to an unearned run in the first, tying the game at one.

Leading 5-4 entering the bottom of the seventh with one out, Zimmerman booted another ball, putting two one instead of one runner and two outs.

Two batters later, Willingham dropped a fly ball in foul territory that he should've caught for the second out.

If the Nationals make both of these plays, the inning ends with out a run scoring. They don't and the Marlins go on to score three times and take the 7-5 lead.

A torrential downpour halted play a couple batters later and after a one hour, 29-minute delay, the umpires called the game. Mainly because rain was supposed to be steady for a minimum of three hours and a day game is scheduled for Wednesday.

This marks the third time a Nationals game failed to go nine innings because of rain. Washington is 0-3 in those games.

The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the first on Adam Dunn's RBI double and they increased it to 3-1 on rookie right-hander Craig Stammen's two-run single in the fourth. The first RBI's of his career.

Dunn hit a two-run shot, his 20th of the season and 298th of his career, in the fifth to make it 5-1.

Stammen gave up four runs, three earned, in 5 1/3 innings and settled for a non-decision. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two.

In the sixth, he gave up back-to-back singles before getting a fly out that moved a runner to third. Stammen's wild pitch scored a run to make it 5-2.

Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez then followed with a two-run homer to make it 5-4 and his night was over.
