Nats sign 4th, 10th-round draft picks
The Nationals have signed their fourth-round draft pick, right-hander A.J. Morris out of Kansas State and 10th-round pick left-hander Paul Applebee from the University of California, Riverside.
Morris went 14-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 16 starts as a junior to earn the Golden Spikes nomination.
A first-team All-American, Morris set single-season school records in wins, strikeouts (100), innings (116.1) and starts as a junior. We won 12 conference games en route to earning Big XII Pitcher of the Year honors in 2009.
In 116 1/3 innings, Morris struck out 100 and walked 33 while holding opponents to a .222 average.
In his three seasons at K-State, Morris was 22-7 with a 3.44 ERA in 49 games, 33 starts.
Applebee was 10-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 14 starts this past season with two complete games. He struck out 63 and walked 20.
