Oh yeah, there's more... (updated twice)
Today's attendance: 29,391
The last time I checked, Jason Bay was leading all American League outfielders in All-Star voting. The Orioles aren't impressed.
In this series, he's 0-for-13 with seven strikeouts, one double play, one intentional walk and a run.
Brad Bergesen update: Seven innings, four hits, one run, no walks, six strikeouts, 94 pitches, 67 strikes, no relievers warming in the bullpen.
Update: Manager Dave Trembley came out of the dugout with two outs in the eighth and a runner on first base. He kept Bergesen in the game, and J.D. Drew flied out on the first pitch. Bergesen left to a rousing ovation with his pitch count at 103.
Another update: Jim Johnson has entered the game in the top of the ninth.

call me crazy, but I would at least have J. Johnson in the bullpen and ready to go... no way Bergesen finishes the game so they will need someone for the 9th and you don't want to leave a tired pitcher in for too long against the red sox.
Better get JJ started though--a complete game isn't as important as not hurting Bergy's arm, nice as it might be. JJ needs some work anyway.
Roch,
Don't ya believe Bergesen deserves to be on this allstar team? He has been as good as any starter in the AL.

You could make a nice argument, but the hotter debate could be Rookie of the Year. I expect Sherrill to represent the Orioles at the All-Star Game. - Roch
I vote Bergy as our Ace. He's gone the distance vs BECKETT! His ERA is lower than Beckett, and he's struck out more than Beckett in this game.
I think JJ gets the call, after Sherrill last night. So Bergy 8 innings, then JJ a solid 9th. That's the game! GO O's!
That'll do, Brad. That'll do.
2 hours in and we're already almost done.
Based solely on the time of game, is Bergesen your favorite pitcher you've ever covered?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duuuuude, you never mention the pace of a game. It's a jinx. If you said that out loud in the press box, you'd be pelted with laptops. And then the next half-inning would last 35 minutes and include 4 pitching changes. - Roch
Another weak strikeout for Pie.
5 tool player? LOL.
I know he has 19 homers and 69 RBI, but Bay is down to .264 and striking out repeatedly. Shows slumps happen to everyone.
Come on JJ. Send the Sux fans packing.
Oh crap. My most sincere apologies!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hmmmm. Did the game just slow down in the top of the ninth? - Roch
Two questions:
1) Are the O's expected to sign any international prospects tomorrow?
2) What and how hard was Bard throwing in the 8th? I'm just watching the gamecast and it looked like he just schooled Pie/Markakis/Huff pretty badly. Almost a Bergy-esque inning....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn't say "expected." And I wasn't watching the radar readings on Bard. Sorry. Roch
Roch, why are you letting non-Oriole fans like Dummie_Oriole post?
We don't walk a guy all game and then JJ starts the 9th that way. Ouch. Get Sherrill up.
A few positives as far as the learning curve goes: 1) DT left Bergy in the game when he clearly had good stuff remaining in the tank 2) B-Rob called off Huff on the exact same pop-up that got us in trouble a few weeks ago 3) Pie is becoming a serviceable but erratic presence which is better than a totally useless roster placeholder 4) Scott may be heating up again 5) Markakis is producing again 6) players seem to be paying attention for 9 innings
I can't blame DT for bringing in JJ but how can JJ give up a leadoff walk? That is a player mistake. Can't do it. Come on Birds. Let's close it out.
What's the blog equivalent of pelting Jason C with laptops? Cause I think it needs to happen now.
If we lose, I'm blaming Jason C.
At least the bases are empty now...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's OK, Jason, I've got your back... unless the group coming after you gets too big. Then I'm showing off my sprinter's speed. - Roch
JJ looked a bit off. Let's see if Sherrill can pull off the save.
Ouch. Gotta regroup and retire the side.
Boy is Trembley going to get grief if we blow this game. I've had a bad feeling about this game all day.
Uhhggg!! Three BBs in the inning...
Make it stop!
C'MON GEORGIE!
Thanks Jason C.
ARRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Jeebus.
What a disaster. Had to return the favor today, huh O's?
why didnt they leave Bergy in for the 9th inning? I dont have a boxscore open but was his pitch count way up?
WAY TO GO JASON C!!
So much for Bergy's great outing. I cannot believe this happened.
What happened to Sherrill?? After 2 K's, he came unglued! Come on! Let's keep it tied, and then try to score in bottom of 9th to win it!
This afternoons game is an exact reason why Trembley probably should be canned. He pulled this junk 2 years ago against the Red Sox and he has proved he doesn't adapt to the game of baseball. If you have someone dominating a good team, you don't take him out PERIOD! This game is on Trembleys head, and when he goes up in post game I hope he accepts responsibility as a manager. I don't care if they still win, he better own up.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! you've got to be kidding me!!!! i was just thinking to myself wow, sherrill's ERA is under 2 and then bam! i check the box score and see that the fat hog gave up 2 runs to help screw bergy out of another well pitched game! i'm back on board with us trading sherrill. i'm sick of his high wire act. get him out of here!!!
Hmmm it's Canada Day.
Can we call this the Canada Day Massacre?
Thanks for that bullpen upgrade Andrew.
WTG ANDREW.........and JASON C!
Why was Bergy taken out? He was mowing them down and had thrown 103 pitches. I'd at least give him the chance to close it out. Now we're looking at blowing the game altogether. Nice....
Wow. I pretty much feel like a jerk. I think I just learned a lesson about jinxes the very hard way.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That rule may only apply to press boxes. I'll have to check the manual. Or ask Jerry Manuel. - Roch
OMG! Why the hell can't they let the starter finish a game. It happens way to much......He was pitching great low pitch count 4 run lead and yet they have to go to the Bullpen. This poor kid shoud have the win....Bad manager!!!!!
What I've always wondered is, does the blame lie with the person who makes the comment or the person who points out that the comment sounded like a jinx?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh sure, turn on me now... - Roch
This was an absolute heartbreaking loss. I feel really bad for Bergy. He pitched a great game and outdueled Beckett, but didn't get what he deserved, a win against a very tough Red Sox team. Sherril retired the first 2 batters he faced in the 9th and it looked like the Orioles will win, but the Red Sox struck back again. Why do the Orioles always have bad luck facing this team? The Mothers Day Massucure, the game where the O's lead 7-0, and this game were all examples of bad luck. I think the reason the O's lost this game was because of the poor job by the umpires, and that the O's offense completely shut down after Wiggy's Homer. Back to the 9th, Sherril should have gotten the strikeout against that player that checked his swing. He totally swung and the first base umpire said NO. These umpires are just plain bias. Now, I feel bad for Sherril too. He was lights out and was on his way to another save today, but the umpires denied it. This is the reason I hate teams like the Red Sox and Yankees. They cheat and play dirty. I don't know If I can get over this but I can't place the blame on DT or anyone on the O's. It was the umpire's fault. But, we need to move on and hopefully, the O's will take atleast 3 out of 4 from Anahiem. Go O's.
