Wow, Roddick and Federer...
No Orioles in the starting line up for all star game. Derek Jeter the leading vote getter this year!! That tells me something--the all star game is a joke and AL doesnt have any good short stops! Jeter may have been good enough several years ago but come on!!! THIS IS A POPULARITY CONTEST!!
So the brain fart trio are trotted out there one more time?
Well Trembley its on you now. Either they hustle and run through walls or I want your head now.
This is the first time in a while Trembley has gone with a "normal" Sunday lineup in a while. I guess its all up to our long relievers today!
It seems to me when these guys get a big cotract there husle disapears, just look at the way nolan runs out ground ball then look at Roberts,Markinkis,Jones&Huff. need i say any more?
Nice to see AJ get the All Star nod.
You had to know Roddick was going to tire and give up the serve eventually, what a match though.
George Sherrill was not named to the All-Star pitching squad and that means that Adam Jones is a 2009 All-Star. First of many.
Congrats to Adam Jones, the Oriole's all-star!
Rich Hill versus this lineup = IMPLOSION
Lets hope for the best but expcet the norm from Hill
Coming off the home stand the Orioles 3 hottest hitters were Wigginton, Salazar and Pie, and between them they will get 2 starts (both by Wiggy) in a 4 game series on the opposite coast? Is there a reason a last place team should be so stuck in the regulars (excepting Matt and Reimold) being irremovable from the lineup more than once every 3 weeks? I'd imagine the mental sluggishness being displayed by some of these guys could warrant at least the thought of throwing them more than 1 day off a month.
Trembley has no balls.
Isn't Saunders a lefty?

Yes. That's why I have him listed as a LHP. But I went back and looked because I assumed you were pointing out a typo. Got me! - Roch
Roch,
Just wanted to throw in my congrats to Adam Jones for making the all-star team. AJ is a BEAST!
Well, you certainly can't accuse Trembley of over reacting.
Did you really think trembley was going to bench any of those guys from last night? He probably didnt say a word to any of them!!
Really wish Trembley had benched two of the following today: Markakis, Roberts, Mora. Their mistakes last night were inexcusable. Don't show them up, tell the press they simply needed the rest, but behind closed doors let them know that their lackadaisical play in the field last night was completely unacceptable. I'm a big fan of Trembley's but I'm a little disappointed with him today. Last night's performance deserved a dramatic reading of the Riot Act.
Just from looking at this line up, it makes me think of more of the same. So, concerning that message you and all of us wanted sent....yeah probably didn't happen. Still got my fingers crossed though
Orioles seem to make at least twice as many mental errors as their opponents.
Nick Markakis isn't having another fabulous year defensively, as he has let at least 5-6 balls drop, which he'd have caught last couple of years. Maybe, he has become wiser and isn't running into walls any more.
Keith Rowe said:
In my honest opinion the Orioles have awful TV broadcasters. The "A" team is actually the very bottom of pile. Thorne wants to anticipate things which might work well on radio but when we can see the event (and our eyes must be better than his) because he can't tell what pitches are and he totally blew the ball Adam Jones brought back in the other night. But most importantly, for years I've heard our HOF pitcher Jim Botox & Dye Palmer say on a close play at first that a Tie goes to the runner. To quote Tim McClellan "There are no ties and there is no rule that says the tie goes to the runner. But the rule book does say that the runner must beat the ball to first base, and so if he doesn't beat the ball, then he is out. So you have to make the decision. That's why umpires are paid the money they are, to make the decision on if he did or if he didn't. The only thing you can do is go by whether or not he beat the ball. If he did, then he is safe.
This is horrid for a MLB announcer to say silliness like this but a HOF player! Get them off the air and hire Joe Angel and Fred Manfra because all of the MASN guys are just bad!
(WARNING: The following post has a rather low VORP of -20. [Value Over Replacement Poster - measures number of readers attracted beyond what a replacement-level poster would attract if given the same topic and same posting opportunities; blog-adjusted for a three-year period and normalized for quality of host])
Steady, big fella! You dislike Jim Palmer, and want to get rid of him because you assume that when he says a "tie goes to the runner" he thinks he is quoting from the rule book? Geez! Even if you were less insulting and more correct about the Rules, you don't make a very compelling argument for Palmer to lose his job.
Your post is balderdash and piffle (redundant, but I like the sound of both words).
Keith, haven't you grown weary of the mean-spirited use of venomous, "ad hominem" attacks such as "Botox & Dye?" Because it is a closely guarded secret, you probably don't know, and, therefore, couldn't mention that Palmer's "baby blues" are really tinted contact lenses. With a few obvious exceptions, can't we all just tone it down - maybe a little bit?
You wrote that the rule says that a runner (rule is about a "batter' not "runner") must beat the ball to first for a batter to be safe. You got it wrong. You misstated the rule - how could you!? Rule 6 covers when a BATTER is out, not when a RUNNER is safe.
Rule 6.05:
A BATTER is out:
(j) After a third strike or after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base;
You are in a Palmer-hating frenzy because you think he cites a non-existent rule. Maybe your displeasure clouded your reading comprehension.
If you have a sense of honor, you should take responsibility for your mistake, and ban yourself from posting until this ugly mess dies down.
I believe even a neophyte baseball fan says "a tie goes...." not because the Rule 605 mentions "tie," but because everyone knows that no other conclusion is possible from a strict interpretation of the actual words: "...he or first base is tagged BEFORE he touches first base."
Jim knows, Tim McClellam knows, I know and you know that an explanation by an umpire for an out call when the ball arrived at the exact moment the batter's foot hit the bag is, "The throw did not get to first before the batter got there."
I think that you are not really as unpleasant as your post reveals you to be. However, to make amends, when Bart is finished with the chalkboard, I want you to write 100 times: "Ball Before, Batter is Out."
Well said Jack on your previous post. I could not agree more.
Thank you for being the voice of reason on here.
It's funny reading the comments on here. After every losing streak ( and there have been many this season) another poster makes critical comments of Andrew.
Way to bust out of your slump B-rob!
Nice HR! We need all the runs we can get with the Golden Boy on the mound.
On the pop fly that was allowed to fall gently to the ground....
Neither Markakis nor Roberts hustled. Neither ran to where the ball came down. Roberts kind of loped back there at half speed, I have no idea in the world what he was thinking. And, no , this was not one of those 'mistakes happen' or 'errors' happen situations. This was a flat-out non-hustling, nonchalant play. Palmer made a very sarcastic comment about urgency and this was a play where neither fielder showed any urgency at all.
Had both sprinted to the ball, Nick would have called off BRob and made an easy catch. Instead, BRob's nonchalant, half-speed, half-bored drift back under the ball gave every appearance that he had it easily. So Nick jogged in too. Nick made a bad assumption and then acted casually himself based upon the assumption. Both of them should be flogged. It would have been inexcusable in a meaningless moment in a meaningless game. But this was the go-ahead run coming home and the pitcher desperately needing to get out of a difficult inning.
This is NOT a fundamentally sound baseball team. Whether you support DT or want him fired, this is a team that is bad at the fundamentals. Baserunning is horrendous. Working the count comes and goes. Bunting is non-existant or terrible, even in the few times when it would be appropriate.
The whole mess makes me really appreciate a guy like Frank Robinson. Came in here and instantly became the leader. All out hustle and determination all the time.
I know this is not football, but somehow I see DT and the half-speed fielding drills and the 'what can I do about it' attitude and I think of Camp Cupcake.
I hope DT ripped into Markakis, Roberts and Mora in one on one private discussions. And I hope he increased the length and tempo of the fielding drills since the last time I saw them. And I hope that Andy can find one more thing we need as badly as we need a big bat. And that is a clubhouse leader. Not a goofy guy like Millar. Not a funny guy like Huff. A guy who gets really really mad about bad play and challenges teammates on it.
But since these players are hard to come by, and since we have no real, established superstars yet, and since we have no established successful system to 'upset', maybe we have to get this fire and brimstone and discipline from a new manager and coaching staff.
Dave probably lost me when he said he saw the missing ball in the glove used on the tag out of Pie but decided it was not worth arguing about because, 'what are you gonna do'? That quote meant only one of two things: A) he is far to fatalistic about umpiring mistakes and, by extension, other mistakes that need to be screamed about and corrected - or - B) he was just lying about seeing the empty-glove tag when it happened.
Hey Roch,
Can you find out what the deal is with Roberts having that patch of dirt on his back shoulder before the game even starts? It seems to be a new ritutal for this season.
Argh! Melvin is frustrating. How do you take that weak a swing on a 2-0 count and ground into a double play?
Looks like you were right Roch, Zaun's total lack of hustle on that popup that fell between Roberts and Markakis was duly rewarded by a benching in today's game.
I hope he learned his lesson!
OK, so maybe Roberts shouldn't have been benched today after all. ;-)
Hey Bruce B:
The brown mark on the back of Roberts jersey is from pine tar from his bat. If you watch him take his warm-up swings his bat comes around and hits against his shoulder leaving the mark...i wondered the same before finally realizing
