Quick word on Mora
| | Comments (23)

Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora told MASN's Amber Theoharis that his exclusion from the lineup again tonight isn't injury related.

Mora believes that manager Dave Trembley just wants to clear his head by allowing him to sit again, and he expects to play tomorrow night. He also said that he knew he wouldn't be in the lineup.

I'm not sure what to make of this, but Trembley might shed more light on it later when he meets with reporters.

I'm hoping to meet with a big plate of food, so I'm heading out for a while. No sense letting this shower go to waste.

Sounds like what happened to Mags, A-roid. I'm not sure if they have done it to Vernen Wells

In your opinion, not what any of us want to hear, but you being the NEW GM of the O's, what would YOU do with the pitching for the Orioles for the rest of this year and what would your hope be for the next year. It is time to play fantasy GM.

Hold that thought. I'll come up with something later. - Roch

Get a chance to see Matusz tonight? 7 Inning complete game (double header). 4 hits, 0 ER. A little shaky early on, but impressive overall.

Can salazar play third? If so, why isn't he?

I was surprised that more wasn't made of the fact that Oscar ph'd for Melvin Tuesday night. I thought that was a telling moment but since it turned out so well not much was made of it. But it was strange to me.

I've been hearing whispers that we want Chris Coghlan if we end up trading Sherrill to the Marlins. Coghlan can play LF, 2B, 3B, and presumably he could learn 1B pretty quickly. Where do you think he fits in? We definitely don't need a LF or a 2B in the short or long term (barring injury obviously). Huff is also a better player at 1B. I doubt we would trade for Coghlan only to platoon him or use him as a bench player. So do you think he sends Mora to the bench?

Obviously this question is moot if we trade Huff or Scott.

Matusz update(7 inning double header): 7IP 4H 0R 0ER 2BB 6K CG. Matusz is dealing at Bowie, in 3 starts just 1 earned run. Anyone still thinking the Os should have taken Justin Smoak?

Maybe another cortizone shot (wink wink) like he got at during last year's All-Star Break is in order??

He'll have a good 2nd half...

Trembley said on the pre-game show that Melvin asked for the day off. Amber mentioned that Melvin did not say that to her when they talked. He was asked today if he would waive his no-trade clause. Apparently he said it depended on where it was, are they contending, and how close was it to Baltimore.

There's more to this than meets the eye. My quess is that it all started when Melvin was pinch hit for in Tuesday's game. He looked none too happy in the dugout after Salazar hit his homerun. But, then again that's par for the course. My daughter attended a game recently and sat close to the Orioles dugout. Her question, "Does Melvin Mora always look unhappy?"

As for the game and series. We really have our work cut out here. This is a hot team. .275 is the lowest batting average in the starting lineup. A split in Anaheim would be good.

I am so tired of Gary Thorne rubbing salt in the wound of yesterday's lost. We already know he was chearing for the Sox. Give this guy another emmy...he is a real class act!

Predictably, after a long flight and a time zone change...our bats will make John Lackey look like Don Drysdale.

They are interviewing the Angels top pick Mike Trout. I'm giving up on the same initial team.

Although there is fun to be had with a rotation of Harvey Haddix, Steve Stone , Sammy Stewart and Mike Mussina. But it gets difficult when your infield includes Bob Bailor and Clint Courtney.

And who could forget Gene Green ?

Me I guess

I'm going for all fish team . First three picks are Mike Trout, Brian Bass and Chico Salmon.

What are these guys swinging at tonight? Wieters didn't get a single pitch that would have been a strike, yet he seems the sucker for the way-outside pitch and finally gets out. A little more plate discipline goes a long way to winning games.

Bill! Please don't ever use the c-word on me. Nevermind that my last boyfriend was referred to as "Cradle". Stop it. All of you. And I'm not that old. Really.

Completely irrelevant, but awww, Pete Rose Jr is still playing baseball. He is with Newark in the Atlantic League, and presumably still beating up his teammates for their per diem dollars. I have no proof other than his size.

Irrelevant, but ironic... Named to the International League All Star team... to be in the team photo alongside our very own Chris Tillman... one former Oriole, Fernando Cabrera playing for the PawSawx. Huh. Who saw that comin?

And who knew Christian Guzman was still playing? In the Mexican League, no less. Huh. Will wonders ever cease?!?!?!?

Guthrie looks like he is tipping his pitches. Did you see what is on Scott's Helmet?

SHERNORIOLES said:

Yeah guthrie--i thought it was going to be a pitcher's duel--WRONG--gUTHRIE GIVES UP 2 HOMERUNS TO THE SAME HITTER--And of course the o's help out a struggling pitcher!! Lackey says thank you!!

SHERNORIOLES said:

They need to send chris ray to AAA and leave him down there until he is fixed!!

Why is this team swinging at all these first pitches?? They are so much better as a team when they are patient!!

Roch- Here is what is the killer, and I guess after a loss the depression really sets in. It is great that Matusz and Arrieta are doing so well after the promotions, but.......
Do you think the O's really will ever win? I just don't see it. The Sox and Yankees are still going to be better. Jones has come down to earth the last month and a half. I just really want Markakis to be better than he really is, and he just can't do it.
I just think offensively we are in real trouble. Unless they really can get some steals by trading Huff and Wiggington and others. Its just as an organization we don't know how to win. The Sox and Yankees, the Angels, and so many others just know how to win. That last 11 seasons have killed that for us.
Plus, not getting a WS in the mid 90's really killed us.
I don't know. It just seems to me that we will always be a step behind.

Wieters calls an 0-2 inside fastball on Abreu and Guthrie put it right where he set up. Why would you call that pitch on 0-2? Let's hope the rookie learned a little something about game-calling. With any luck, Zaun is telling him SOMEthing behind the scenes to help out, but for whatever reason I kind of doubt it. Zaun has always said he's there if Matt has questions, but tonight you need to pull the kid aside and say, 0-2 you need to waste a pitch out of the zone, especially to a guy who is known to crank inside pitches.

Really frustrating.

Top 4 hitter in our lineup went 1-16. Lackey's good, but he has a 4.70 ERA. Looks like somebody was able to score runs off him.

Gary from Elkton said:

Interesting Roch, no after the game interview tonight for Trembley. I'm wondering if there was a team meeting. Brian Roberts is and has been my favorite player for the last five years or so but I'm getting tired of him not running balls out hit in the infield or should I say not running hard. He runs a very slow trot touches the bag and then runs into the dugout. I noticed Adam Jones did the same thing; a couple of years ago Trembley jumped on Tejada for doing that, I wonder if there was a closed door meeting tonight to address the lack of fire or hustle that was demonstrated. Oh by the way Lackey dominated the O's tonight and he was lifted for a closer who did his job and closed the game out. Lastly, Sciosia (sp?) is considered such a great fundamental manager and how many baserunners have they had thrown out on the bases this year, yeah, 73. Bottom line, if you win you're a good manager no matter what, if you lose you're open to criticism. Trembley hasn't been given the chance to win yet, but it is getting closer; by this time next year Arrieta and Tillman when join Bergesen and probably by the end of next year Matusz will be up. I will caution people though that there will be a learning curve, which is one of the reasons why I would like to see Arrieta and Tillman this year so they can get some of the butterflies out of their system this year rather than waiting until next year.

Just came from the game in Anahiem. Just shaking my head all the way home. I just don't understand how you can give up a 3-run HR on a 0-2 pitch. I just don't get it. Why was that pitch anywhere near the strike zone? We just give games away, its very frustrating.

John said:

That's the problem with Guthrie and a couple other O's pitchers is they don't have an out pitch.Balls are on the same plane and not much speed variance.I actually think Matuz is more major league ready than the other guys and it wouldn't surprise me if he replaces Hill sometime in the next month.
