Sox rally this time, beat O's, 6-5 in 11 innings
This time, Boston pulled off the stunning rally.
Down to their last out, the Sox tied the game in the 9th and won it 6-5 in 11 innings over the Orioles, in front of 29,391 on Wednesday afternoon.
Dave Trembley talks about the Orioles extra-inning loss to the Red Sox
Jacoby Ellsbury led off the 11th vs. Danys Baez with a double and, after reaching third on a fly out, he scored on a Julio Lugo single to left past a drawn-in infield. That broke the 5-5 tie.
The Red Sox scored four in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Dave Trembley elected to take Brad Bergesen out after eight innings and 103 pitches with a 5-1 lead.
Kevin Youkilis hit a two-run homer off Jim Johnson to make it 5-3. George Sherrill came on, and, after he recorded two straight strikeouts, four straight batters reached. A two-run single by pinch hitter Rocco Baldelli tied the game.
Boston pitchers combined to retire the last 24 O's hitters in a row as Baltimore did not have a hit after the fourth inning.
The O's failed to win their first series vs. Boston since taking two in a rwo from the Sox last May 13-14.
On the mound, the O's Bergesen out pitched Josh Beckett. In eight innings, Bergesen allowed just four hits on one run with no walks and six strikeouts.
Over his last seven starts, Bergesen is 4-0, 2.06.
The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Felix Pie RBI single. Luke Scott's solo homer in the second made it 2-0. It's Scott's 15th homer and his 10th in the last 28 games.
After Dustin Pedroia's RBI double made it 2-1 in the top of the third, the O's went up 4-1 in the last of the frame on a Nick Markakis two-run double.
Ty Wigginton's solo homer in the 4th made it a 5-1 lead and extended his batting streak to ten games.
The Orioles complete this homestand going 3-3. They begin a seven-game, West Coast road trip at Los Angeles Thursday night.

Loved Bergeson. Johnson and Sherrill stunk it up badly. This game was so frusterating not just because they completely blew what should have been an easy victory, but also because Bergeson doesn't get his win. The kid should be able to walk away from this game knowing how well he pitched in a WINNING effort. Just couldn't believe one at bat to the next with Sherrill. I listened to it on the radio, so i don't know how it looked but with every pitch George threw my heart was sinking.
My oh my. I have to strongly disagree with Trembley taking Bergesen out of there. What a horrible move and decision. You have got to keep Bergesen in there to go for the complete game. You dont just go to your bullpen cause its there and you want to get happy and use it. It is like having an eraser on your pencil, you dont always have to use the eraser if your pencil is doing the job. Maybe if Bergy struggles in the ninth of course you pull the guys from the pen, but instead of a potential complete game win we now go on the road on a negative vibe and with our bullpen already worked. Just a terrible way to take the momentum from our team and give it away. You have to think Trembley has to take responsibility for such decisions and be putting his job in jeopardy. Sam Perlozzo had a very similar way of managing towards the end of his tenure.
