Four-run 8th lifts Nats to 5-3 victory
| | Comments (0)

Adam Dunn's 300th career home run was the only run the Nationals could get off Braves rookie starter Tommy Hanson in his seven innings of work.

But they did manage to get four off relievers Mike Gonzalez, Peter Moylan and Eric O'Flaherty in the eighth to win 5-3 and make a winner out of John Lannan.

A single by pinch-hitter Ronnie Belliard and a walk to Josh Bard came before Nyjer Morgan sacrificed them into scoring position. Nick Johnson walked to load the bases.

Ryan Zimmerman stepped up and singled home Billiard and Bard, tying the game at three.

Dunn followed with an RBI single to put the Nationals ahead for the first time in the game and Josh Willingham added an insurance run for the two-run advantage.

Lannan tossed eight innings of three-run ball to win his sixth game of the season. It was Lannan's 11th quality start of the year and sixth in a row.

The 24-year old left-hander gave up nine hits and had trouble throwing first-pitch strikes early on, only 17 of the 30 batters he faced on the day, but he settled in and got help from his defense. They turned four double plays, two that ended innings.

Nate McLouth singled home a run in the third to put the Braves up 1-0. Chipper Jones and Garret Anderson each drove in a run in the sixth to make it a 3-0 game.

Hanson allowed only two hits, both singles, before Dunn's long homer. In fact, after Anderson Hernandez's single in the second, only one ball made it out of the infield until Zimmerman flew out to end the sixth.

Closer Mike MacDougal came in the ninth and struggled to find the strike zone, walking two batters with one out.

Pinch-hitter Brian McCann lined out to right for the second out. Second baseman Brooks Conrad, who hit a three-run homer last night, grounded out to second to end the game.

Dunn's 300th homer was extra special because the Nationals were able to come back and win the game.

"It really wasn't that significant at the time," said Dunn. "The reason I said it because it was a solo home run. We were down by two. What made it special later on was the way we won the game. That was awesome in the eighth inning.

"The way the crowd got into it. I don't know how many people were here. But from the seventh inning on, it was very loud and energetic. They made it great. It was awesome."

The win snaps the Nationals four-game losing streak and gives them a 3-2 record on July 4.

After the game, the Nationals officially designated Jesus Colome for assignment. Washington has 10 days to trade Colome, release him, or place him on waivers.

If he clears waivers, Colome can either report to the minors or become a free agent.

As I mentioned earlier, Jason Bergmann will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse in time for tomorrow's game.
