Today's pitchers: Hill vs. Saunders
LHP Rich Hill (3-2, 7.08) today makes his 10th start of this season, his 7th on the road and the 1st of his career vs. the Angels.
Hill is much in need of a good outing.
He has lasted just 4 1/3 and 3 1/3 in his last two games vs. Florida and Boston. In those 7 2/3 innings he has allowed 17 hits, 13ER and four homers for an ERA of 15.26.
Hill has not pitched five innings in five of his starts. Over his last five starts, he has pitched just 19 innings total.
Right-handed batters are hitting .297 off him, while lefties hit .250. When he pitches with runners in scoring position, he yields a .400 batting average. He is averaging six walks per nine innings.
Still, there is this stat. When Hill starts this year, the O's are 7-2. That's the best record of any O's starting pitcher.
The 29-year-old lefty is 3-2, 4.50 in six road starts.
LHP Joe Saunders (8-5, 4.24) today makes his 17th start of 2009, his 9th at home and the 7th in his career vs. Baltimore.
The Falls Church, Virginia native is coming off his poorest start of this season. Tuesday vs. Texas he allowed six hits and eight runs (all earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He gave up four homers vs. the Rangers.
On the year, Saunders has allowed 18 homers in 102 innings.
In six June starts, Saunders went 2-2, 6.06. On the season, in eight home starts, he is 4-2, 2.95.
The 2002 first-round draft pick (12th overall) out of Virginia Tech, had a great 2008, going 17-7, 3.41 in 31 starts.
