Tonight's pitchers: Guthrie vs. Lackey
| | Comments (2)

RHP Jeremy Guthrie (6-7, 5.11) tonight will make his 17th start of the season, his 7th on the road and the 4th of his career vs. the Angels.

Guthrie is 2-0, 3.00 over his last two starts, with wins over Philadelphia and Washington.

Guthrie has struggled early in his starts. Of the 56 runs he has allowed all year, 28 have come in the first two innings of his starts.

Guthrie went 2-3, 5.76 in five June starts. In six road starts this year, he is 2-3, 6.96.

Guthrie 2008: 2ER or less 17 of 30 starts, .242 batting ave.
Guthrie 2009: 2ER or less 3 of 16 starts, .273 batting ave.

In 91 2/3 innings on the season, Guthrie has given up 17 homers with 28 walks and 57 strikeouts. The O's are 6-10 when he starts.

Guthrie vs. LAA:
2008: 1-0, 2.57, one start
Career: 1-1, 3.47, 4 games, 3 starts (23 1/3IP, 10H, 17K)

Guthrie has allowed just 10 hits in 80 at bats in his career vs. the Angels for an opponent average of just .125.

RHP John Lackey (2-3, 5.06) tonight will make his 10th start of this season, his 3rd at home and the 11th of his career vs. the Orioles.

After pitching to an ERA of 6.50 in spring training, Lackey went on the DL April 5th with a strained right forearm and missed the first 33 games of this season. He did not make his first start until May 16th.

Lackey, who has recorded four quality starts among his eight outings, is coming off a very good performance last Saturday at Arizona. He did not get a decision, but he allowed just five hits over seven innings and the one run he gave up was unearned.

Lackey by month, 2009:
May: 1-1, 6.05, four starts
June: 1-2, 4.50, five starts

Right-handed batters hit only .239 with one homer off Lackey while lefties are hitting a robust .375 with five homers off the 30-year-old righty. The Angels are 4-5 when he starts.

In 2007, Lackey's ERA of 3.01 was the best in the American League. He became the first Angel since Frank Tanana in 1977 to win the ERA title.

A 12-game winner last year, Lackey is 0-2, 5.28, in two home starts in 2009.

Lackey vs. Orioles:
2009 and 2008: No appearances
Career: 6-3, 3.46, ten starts (67 2/3IP, 71H, 16B, 53K)

O's hitters, career vs. Lackey:
Huff: 2-25
Jones: 0-2
Markakis: 5-17
Mora: 4-22
Roberts: 7-24
Scott: 1-2, HR
Wigginton: 1-9
Zaun: 4-18

A player not listed has not batted vs. Lackey.

You never like facing a bonafide ace putting up a 5.00 ERA in only a few starts... this typically means he's due. I really hope we can jump out to an early lead before he gets settled in.

Thought it was going to be a pitcher's duel tonight---WRONG--Guthrie gives up 2 homeruns to the same hitter!!! Of course orioles bats have gone south!!Roberts still looks lost at the plate but he isnot by himself!!!
