Trembley on Jones
| | Comments (14)

When pressed to discuss Adam Jones' mental lapse in center field today, Orioles manager Dave Trembley pointed out that such mistakes won't be tolerated. But he also showed his compassion and fondness for the young All-Star.

It was an interesting mix.

"We talked about some things that we need to do better in the second half of the season, and there were a couple things today that I saw and will get taken care of and we'll do better," Trembley said.

"It's under the big heading of fundamentals. I think fundamentals and approach to how you play the game. You play the game with pride and a little bit better attention to detail."

Jones got some unwanted attention from Trembley by catching Marco Scutaro's fly ball in the seventh inning and being slow to return it to the infield as Raul Chavez tagged and advanced to second base.

"I'm not sure if he forgot how many outs or if there was a runner at first," Trembley said. "I want to leave on a positive note, but that kind of stuff, there's no room for that. Adam Jones, I love him like he was my own son, but there's no room for that. He's a great kid and a good player and he made a mistake and he's embarrassed by it, but that's what I'm talking about. There's no reason for that."

Not that his health is an excuse for what happened on the play, but Jones isn't 100 percent physically.

"His knee is sore," Trembley said. "He's had some fluid taken out of his knee. He'll get some more fluid taken out of his knee, I think, after the game right now. He's fouled a bunch of balls off his shins.

"He plays with a lot of heart. I mean, the game in Seattle that we scored five in the ninth, he showed me something. The take-out slide at second, running hard on an infield ball. He's a man. And he won't draw attention to himself for being banged up and he won't use that as an excuse. But he needs a couple days to get it back."

There apparently haven't been any serious discussions about keeping Jones out of the All-Star Game.

"He's fine," Trembley said. "His mother will be there. She'll take care of him."

Trembley loves Jones as if it were his own son?? Isnt that a little dramatic. Im not sold on his act anymore.

Who's the first half MVP? I'd throw Roebrts name in there. How many lead off men have 41 RBI's. Also Bergy who has really given hope for the rotation with his consistent outings.Baez has been solid too for the most part.

Roch, I'd prefer to see Adam not go to the All-Star Game. Maybe he's not seriously injured, but when I read about fluid being removed from his knee I'm thinking the rest would benefit him more than playing on Tuesday. Sure, there's the possibility that he doesn't get in the game, but on the other hand he could enter it in the late innings and then get stuck out in center because it goes extra innings. What then?

It just seems too risky to have him participate. He was named to the team, so he's still honored regardless of his availability.

Luke would be the obvious choice to replace him and I don't think there's anything wrong with him, is there?

BTW, I agree with your choice of Scott as the first half MVO--an easy choice. (I'd like to see him take part in a home run derby someday. If he came into it in a grove, I think he'd have an excellent shot at winning it.)

I don't think Maddon would be obligated to pick another Oriole, but Luke sure deserves it. - Roch

Agree on Roberts. When he does well, the Orioles do well. When he doesn't do well, it gets dicey.

Jones is lucky his name isn't Felix Pie. He would be hung in effigy, or maybe not in effigy.

Has anybody noticed that Jones has only hit one home run in his last 150 AB's?

Luke Scott hands down, you will throw roberts in there you must be on crack.

Roberts, Markakis and Jones - there's no MPV in there. I have big hopes for the future, but all 3 of them disappoint me in their approach to the game. I suppose it comes with losing - and having a nice guy manager (who I don't blame)...but there's some lethargy running through this team and i think it all started with roberts. unfortunately it will cost a good man his job...I cannot believe AM will tolerate what he sees from his 'stars' - he'll have to get a tougher guy in there.

Deke, thats probably why the American League passed over him for the Home Run Derby. And Pena got it without even asking for it.

For those of you who are DT detractors, if you saw this press conference and still don't think he is the right guy for the orioles, then I have to question your intelligence, seriously. I never have seen a more deft handling of a delicate situation such as your all-star player having a brain-fart. Dave knows what he is doing, it's up to the players to perform. Ask other former mediocre managers such as Joe Torre and Tito Francona.

Ken Francis said:

Roch, Regarding Luke as a hypothetical fill-in for Adam, while Maddon might not have a strict obligation to pick another Oriole, my guess is that he probably would do so as a professional courtesy and in keeping with the spirit (and probably MLB's marketing) of the game (that is, fans from all teams should have at least one of their players on the roster).

Ken Francis said:

B-Rob's had a good first half, but Scott is easily the Most Valuable Oriole. Now if you want to talk about who the Most Important Oriole is as the team now stands, then, yes, that's B-Rob, also by a wide margin. And Sam summed up very well why Brian's so vitally important to the team when he writes, "When (Roberts) does well, the Orioles do well. When he doesn't do well, it gets dicey."

Honestly, if you think about it, where would the Orioles be had they traded B-Rob for a handful of prospects? There would be no established leadoff hitter. I imagine Adam Jones would inherit the role, but then who would follow him in the order? And also, how would Adam fare without having Roberts on base ahead of him, distracting the pitcher?

Losing Brian would send shockwaves through the lineup. If the team had gone the entire season up to now without B-Rob, I'm guessing they'd be competing with the Nationals for the worst record in baseball.
