Updating Hernandez and Guthrie
| | Comments (28)

David Hernandez was optioned to Double-A Bowie to make room for shortstop Cesar Izturis on the 25-man roster. Hernandez will throw a bullpen session today, start for the Baysox on Monday and most likely take his next turn on July 20, when the Orioles begin a three-game series in New York.

The Orioles didn't want to put Hernandez in the bullpen, preferring to keep him on a starter's schedule. And now they're able to retain an extra position player.

Jeremy Guthrie has a virus and won't make his next start on the recommendation of team physician Dr. William Goldiner. Jason Berken starts tonight, Rich Hill goes tomorrow and Brad Bergesen takes Guthrie's turn on Sunday.

The Orioles are hopeful that Guthrie can return to the rotation for their series in Chicago that begins immediately after the break.

Dennis Sarfate will start for Bowie tomorrow and throw one inning on an injury rehab assignment. He'll report to Single-A Frederick on Tuesday.

Manager Dave Trembley is on the field for batting practice, but he won't watch the game in the clubhouse. He'll move to an undisclosed location in street clothes.

He declined an offer to sit in the press box.

wHY hILL TOMORROW??? OH NO!! aNYBODY BUT HIM! i AM TIRED OF WATCHING HIM GET LIT UP!!! bALLS WILL BE FLYING TOMORROW NIGHT! UNFORTUNATELY, NOT FOR THE HOME TEAM!!!

So with berken and hill starting the next two games. We can safely assume that the O's will lose those games. But We will crush the jays on sunday with bergy starting.

Chris in Hawaii said:

With Bergesen starting Sunday, I'd like to see Wieters sit or DH tomorrow and start Sunday. If he DH's, we'd have 4 switch hitters and presumably 3 righties in the line-up against lefty Romero.

It'd be nice to go into the All-Star break on a positive note. I like our chances with Bergy on Sunday.

I really hope Guthrie's 'virus' isn't contagious...I saw him at Wendy's today and he said he was okay.

Thats a shame about Hernandez, Im sure he will be back soon.

Its probably the right call, you cant just let Pie & Salazar walk. They have value & talent. Salazer is a bit older but we may need him next year. He should be playing,,,someone tell me why??

Mora should have been DFA'd,,,he's not good & not part of our future.

Anyone getting regular AB's who is not a legit trade chip or part of the future should be dfa'd...Mora is the only one who meets that criteria. But alas,,,again he's an Angelos favorite

Why is he eating at Wendy's?LOL!!

This is priceless from The Sun:

"Chris Tillman wanted more eggs for breakfast but couldn't communicate the thought from his high chair. So he grabbed an orange and flung it across the kitchen, hitting his grandmother flush in the back of the head.

Tillman wasn't quite 2, yet he had thrown his first strike.

"He's got an arm," joked Tillman's stepfather, David Sterrenburg. "Even then."

The orange-tossing incident goes down in family lore as the first time Tillman's right arm drew attention."

I can't wait to see this guy in the major leagues. This team finally has a bright future. Thanks Andrew!

Why Hernandez and not Berken, Hernandez has pitched much better?

He just pitched on Wednesday. His next turn falls during the break. - Roch

Looks like Roberts was a regular Typhoid Annie. I am really looking forward to Berken' start tonight. My gut feeling is that he will have a good outing being at home and keeping the ball down in the strike zone. But who knows?

It shall be an interesting time and a very important game for JB.

More from The Sun:

"When the Orioles acquired Tillman, the primary criticism was that he needed to add a consistent changeup to go with a late-life, mid-90s fastball and hammer-dropping curve.

He and Griffin began working on the changeup last year, when they were together at Bowie. By the second half of the season, it clicked. Now, he considers it his best pitch.

The changeup "was terrible last year," Tillman said. "Now I'll throw it 20, 25 times a game. I am more than thrilled with that pitch, and all the credit goes to [Norfolk catcher] Chad Moeller and Mike Griffin."

Says Griffin of the changeup: "That was the last piece of the puzzle to put into place and it is now in place. Now, he is learning how to use all three pitches in the ballgame."

David Stockstill, Orioles director of player development, believes Tillman could be in the majors right now. But there are still things the club wants him to refine, like throwing fewer pitches per at-bat, holding on runners and fielding his position.

When he gets to Baltimore, the Orioles want him to think he belongs. And they want him to stay for good."

How can you argue with the logic of keeping him down on the farm this long? They didn't rush him and he's found his best pitch in the last year AND he gives his pitching coach and Moeller credit. I'm so glad we got him through waivers. If/when he comes up this year, it should be very interesting.

Ah, crud. Hill? Really?? I have tickets for that game. Craaaaaaaaaaaap.

Matthew said:

Am I the only one that's glad to see Hill get another chance? I think it's only fair to let this guy get a couple more starts in before they cut him/send him to the pen. All of his starts aren't bad, and when he's good it's amazing.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Berken does not have a future as an MLB starter, and neither does Hill. I can't imagine that this behavior of bouncing DH up and down is very helpful. It's also asinine. There are clearly better roster moves to be made.

WHY is my name so popular here??? I didn't enter the above BTW...

Capt Kirk in Pickles? naaaa , that's just Trembley....

Bowie gets a gift, a start from a guy clearly better than that league.

What the crap are you talking about?

Glassman said:

It'd be funny if they put Dave in the Left Field seats next to the bullpen, with a good disguise, and he could carefully drop orders via the guys in the Pen.

Bill G. said:

I guess since the trading deadline is getting closer, Mr. Andy will run out and buy a Go Phone so he can start calling the other GMs. He'll probably make a lot of 411s to get all those numbers, and you know how that can run your bill. Mr. Andy will be quick, because he's only got so many minutes.
Huff and Baez will be helping contending teams...and maybe Mora, but I doubt it. Everyone else stays put, unless someone will pony up for Guthrie.
'30' minutes ought to do it.
Mr. Andy can then get back to brushing up on his game.

Good day for me..I won a $250 Home Depot GC and a pair of O's tickets for answering the question on the Scott/Roch/Jeremy and Anita show! The Giants have 3 great prospects at SP down at AA, the Bumgardener kid probably isn't available, but the next 2 could be, in exchange for Huff. I really think the Giants are a few bats away in the NL, so I would like to see us go for one of them.

JPA said:

I hope what DT said to Hernandez was "We owe you kid. Thanks for biting the bullet since we are a bit stuck." If DH is a trooper this wasn't a horrible option. I too think he is better than Hill and Berken but missing a couple starts is nothing.

Chris in Hawaii said:

Ok, I just checked and it looks like all three starting Jays pitchers are lefties, so my theory of DHing Weiters on Saturday mostly because of Romero being a lefty go out the door. I still think it's a good plan though.

Orioles fan 4 life said:

Shame they had to demote Hernandez, even if it is for a week or so. But it gives them more time to make a better deal for Felix and Oscar (The Odd Couple). Actually both could go if they can get back something decent and they could bring up Gathright to back up CF.

Either AM is dealing very close to the vest, or nothing is going on, as there are no good rumors out there about the O's. But I can't imagine that nothing is going on. C'mon Roch, WE NEED GOOD GOSSIP !!

I don't want to get rid of pie because i hate him,i'd really like to see what he could do with another club and regular playing time.I think he could blossom into a pretty decent player. But I think they'll hold onto him because they're not completely sold on Reimold yet.BTW..One guy who's been overlooked for ROY is pitching against us tomorrow night. He's pitched quite well for Toronto this year.

Adam - I think Tettleton meant he's glad we got Moeller through waivers, not Tillman.

But I thought the same thing initially...

Birds Fan in Seattle said:

Why do people continually bash Mora? Ok, he's 37, he's got fewer HRs than last year (much fewer), but he's still a great 3B, plays smart, and when I was at the game Wednesday, he hit two doubles, keyed the start of the comeback in the 9th with the 2nd one, and made an absolutely amazing play on a line shot that crossed the bag to save a double. I say show him some respect.

If history repeats itself the bullpen will be totally worn out before sundays game. Berken and Hill havent shown the ability to command their pitches and get hitters out on a consistent basis. In my opinion if I were one of those two I would worry about my job security. Hernandez has out pitched both of them and the O's are dying to see how Tillman responds to a major league promotion. By the way i'm glad the O's sent Hernandez to the minors until his next start. At least he can stay on a regular schedule during the all star break. Agree ?? Disagree??
Everyone have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

CB, I'm ready to trade Mora or anyone else who won't be back for whatever we can get now. The real problem is not Angelos' favoritism now, but in the contract we're obligated under. Mora has a no-trade clause, he has to approve any trade. The problem is not value, any number of (esp. NL) teams would give us SOMETHING we could try out (some prospect or another), but Mora would not approve. Cutting him only means, as Jeff pointed out earlier, that we lose ANY chance (though still a longshot) to receive compensatory picks.

John, you're right on about Romero. What a crop of rookie talent this year! Reimold, Bergy, Porcello, Price, Romero, some catcher I can't remember (good 2nd half, I think), and that's just the AL! I don't think the issue is nerves about Reimold as much as you need a backup outfielder (all three spots) and pinch-runner, Gathright is "today's" Pie but already at his peak, whereas Pie could get better, so they're going to keep him unless they can get something decent in trade to see if part-timing it gives him some space to grow -- which seems to have worked so far. It would take a really rotten team to give him a starting job based on his performance thus far; they'd probably want to do what we're doing, hide him and see if he can develop as a backup.

I think that all of us who remember our Little League or HS playing days can appreciate your warm sentiments, though, about Pie getting a real shot of his own somewhere eventually (not looking that good in BMore for an OF). We tried, but he wasn't ready, and hopefully as a backup (who actually played a little more), he can grow and earn himself trade value for someone who needs him. I also feel for Pie because he wasn't let out of his home country for three weeks, he underperformed badly in his real opportunity, he's been a space cadet here and there otherwise, and the stomach situation. Yet he keeps a positive, team-first attitude and always gives his all when he gets his chances (even if his brain doesn't always), and according to Luuuuke he works hard and is receptive to help -- you have to like that kind of character. Only a misanthrope wants to see any ballplayer get anything but the best chance to succeed as a star in the majors. Unfortunately, they make you earn it vs. everybody else.
