Brad Bergesen has completed five innings and convinced us further that he's the real deal.

The guy gets outs. With his fastball, slider, change, whatever. He throws strikes, and he does it quickly.

Bergesen has held the Red Sox to one run and three hits in five innings. He hasn't walked a batter. And he's making plays in the field, reminding us that the glove is there for more than just handling throws back from the catcher.

Bergesen has thrown 64 pitches, 46 for strikes.

Meanwhile, Felix Pie was involved in a nasty collision at first base with Josh Beckett in the bottom of the fifth. He appeared to injure his right shoulder, bringing head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and assistant Brian Ebel from the dugout. We'll see if he returns to center field in the sixth.

Adam Jones isn't supposed to play today. The Orioles can't afford to lose Pie, too.

Update: Pie remained in the game.

what a weird series of events..nolan picks up the ball in left gets the out call, pie called out with the glove hand while pedroia is holding the ball,Huff gets HBP and swings srtike 3...not to mention the elastic k zone

Gotta love watching the Sux struggle against Bergy.

As much as I don't like Pie, that was a bush league move by Beckett. The replay looks like he shoved Pie.

And Roch, thank you for getting Beckett's first name correct. Thorne has called him "John" at least twice already.

Food poisoning, foul balls off the throat, colliding with Beckett... This guy has seen a season's worth of pain in his 105 AB's.

If the o's do trade huff what will they be looking for in return, position players or pitching? personally i would guess position players since they probably wont be able to get anything better than what they have waiting in the minors, whats your take?

Honestly, I don't think there's a firm answer to that one. Depends on the team, and the players available. Could go either way. - Roch

He got in a collision at first base?

Nice signing ANDREW!!!!

Man, this kid Bergesen is battling today. I mean nothing phases this guy. Down 3-0 against Pedroia in the 6th? No problem, I'll just come at you with strikes - some off-speed, some fastballs, all strikes - and get you to fly out. And I'll do it quick and surgical....make it look easy!

They can stash, er , um, I mean DL him tomorrow....

Has Joey Gaithright been pulled from the AAA game yet?

The officiating in this series is terrible. It was a bit one-sided there at the beginning, but this is getting a little ridiculous. I guess they are trying to make their mistakes balance out. But, seriously, these guys are terrible.

Bergesen is dealing. This guy is the real deal, teams just cannot figure him out. Glad I picked him up on my fantasy team.

Eleven in a row and then he gets Ellsbury to end the 7th. Got to love Bergey. He shows it doesn't matter how hard you throw it, it's where you throw it. That's the difference between him and the other O's starters right now.

I guess Pie went back out in the field--just following on Gamecast and it shows him in there. I am sure the trolls were rooting for a serious injury.

Do the Orioles still send the next day pitcher ahead on an upcoming road trip? Is Guts already in Cali? If so who is the DR for todays game?

He was in the clubhouse before the game. - Roch

Roch,

Is it me or does Wieters not block the plate very well. The few times I have seen him this year at a play at home plate, his foot doesn't look like it's covering the plate. Is this something that is being addressed? Why hasn't Buck Martinez or Rick Dempsey pointed this out? Or am I just mistaken here?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He's not a finished product back there, but his foot was on the plate last night after he took Pie's throw. Didn't completely block plate, but he was standing on it. - Roch

It's hard to tell, on TV, why Bergeson has been so successful. He must be putting some movement on the ball because even when he elevates the ball he gets away with it. And he must be deceptive as well because he has been getting quite a few strikeouts looking.

It won't be long, if he continues in this fashion, before people start calling him a pitcher in Maddux's mould.

You're right about movement and deception. And he's always around the plate. Doesn't miss by much. - Roch

Bergy is machine like pitching out there. I'm so happy he's sticking it in the eye of the people who call him a 4th or 5h starter.I just wish Berken would pay more attention to how Bergy does it, just keep the ball down and spot the fastball.Berken just pitches too high up in the zone.I think this is the same concern they have with Tillman.

Gotta get through the 9th. Hope Bergy pitches a CG.

Bergy the next Buerhle (sp?)? They seem to operate the same way on the mound. I don't know how their stuff compares.

I loooove Bergy's down and away slider I feel like its been the difference between his first few starts and what he has become now.
