Dukes demoted to Triple-A Syracuse
| | Comments (0)

Wednesday, July 1:
Pete McElroy reports the Nats have sent Elijah Dukes to Triple-A Syracuse: "The Nationals optioned outfielder Elijah Dukes to Triple-A Syracuse, making room on the 25-man roster for outfielder Nyjer Morgan and left-hander Sean Bunrett." [masnsports.com]

Mark Zuckerman writes more on Elijah Dukes' demotion: "In explaining the decision, Mike Rizzo and Manny Acta pointed out two things: 1) Dukes has options, so he could be sent down without risk of losing him altogether, and 2) He needs to play every day, whether up here or down there. Sitting on the bench in the majors doesn't do anything for his development." [Washington Times]

Chico Harlan has more on Elijah Dukes' demotion: "Acting General Manager Mike Rizzo called the demotion of Dukes "a pure baseball decision" designed to ensure Dukes would get enough at-bats and playing time to continue to develop, but the move also seemed to signal a loss of confidence in a player once considered among the organization's top prospects." [Washington Post]

Buster Olney has Nats trade speculation: "The Washington Nationals are said to be asking high prices for the likes of Nick Johnson, who is earning $5.5 million this year. If interested teams turn elsewhere, then the Nationals might face a day this summer when they won't be able to move Johnson at all. Josh Willingham has drawn some interest from evaluators this year; he's hitting .282 with a .402 on-base percentage and .544 slugging percentage. But the market for him will probably be limited because he's making $2.95 million. "We'd like the guy, but we're kind of in lockdown mode," said one GM, forlornly." [ESPN.com]
