Comparing Adam Dunn and Nyjer Morgan
Monday: Power Rankings, more on Martis | Tuesday: Milledge, Hanrahan traded to Pittsburgh | Wednesday: Dukes demoted to Triple-A Syracuse | Friday: Taking a closer look at Nyjer Morgan
Thursday, July 2:
Pete McElroy reflects on the first half of the Nats season: "Mike MacDougal and Tyler Clippard are the only members of the 'pen who haven't blown a save, yet. New comer Sean Burnett blew a save in his first appearance with the Nationals on Wednesday." [masnsports.com]
Chico Harlan says the Nats will be quiet in the International Signing period: "The Nats have now established a facility in Boca Chica, but they're not quite ready to reenter the high-stakes auction for top international talent. This year, the Nats will make hardly a peep. They might sign a few marginal prospects, but probably won't dish out a single six-figure signing bonus. Not all of that reticence can be attributed to the Gonzalez scandal; the Nats this year know they need to devote their resources (err, money) to a certain amateur pitcher, Stephen Strasburg. Still, the Gonzalez mess was a setback. Team president Stan Kasten has admitted as much, and said he doesn't expect much activity on the international front until 2010." [Washington Post]
Rob Neyer looks at a comparison between Adam Dunn and Nyjer Morgan: "Since I know you're all pressed for time, I'll summarize the next few grafs, thusly: 1) Dunn is 45 runs better with the bat; Morgan is 5 runs better on the bases; and Morgan is 35 runs better with the glove. Ergo, Dunn is a whole five runs better than Morgan. Or roughly speaking, one-half of one win. For this, Dunn is paid $10 million and Morgan $411,500." [ESPN.com]
Harper Gordek gives reasons for sending Elijah Dukes down: "Why is Dukes being sent down? Because the Nats want to play [Nyjer] Morgan, and because they want to showcase [Adam] Dunn and [Josh] Willingham and [Willie] Harris and [Nick] Johnson who they all may very likely deal in the next month. Dukes should be playing everyday and can't up here so down he goes. I know it seems like a demotion in the face of a much inferior player ([Austin] Kearns!) but really the Nats had no choice."
