Could Sherrill be traded?
| | Comments (0)

Thursday, July 2:
Roch Kubatko reports two Norfolk Tides made the Triple-A All-Star team: "Triple-A Norfolk pitchers Chris Tillman and Jim Miller have been named to the International League All-Star team that will play the Pacific Coast League's best on July 15 in Portland." [masnsports.com]

Steve Melewski wonders if Dave Trembley should have brought in Jim Johnson and George Sherrill against Boston: "Trembley made the move a lot of managers probably would have made. He just didn't need to make it.

Now, Johnson and Sherrill may not be available [Thursday], certainly Sherrill won't. Sherrill had thrown 25 tough pitches the night before and it was no surprise the more he threw yesterday, the less effective he became." [masnsports.com]

Peter Schmuck says David Hernandez will fill in for Koji Uehara: "Triple-A call-up David Hernandez, who moved into the rotation for the second time when Uehara came up sore, will take Uehara's slot indefinitely." [Baltimore Sun]

Ken Rosenthal writes about George Sherrill trade rumors: "The Orioles lack long-term solutions at shortstop and third base. They are interested in Marlins rookie Chris Coghlan, sources say, who is batting leadoff and playing left field but was predominantly a third baseman in college.

The Marlins, according to one source, will not trade Coghlan for Sherrill, who is earning $2.75 million in his first year of salary arbitration and will be a free agent after the 2011 season. As for the Marlins' shortstop prospects, all of the better ones are at single-A.

A three-way deal is possible -- the Marlins are deep enough in young pitching to pry a shortstop from another club -- but the biggest issue remains the Orioles' appetite for moving Sherrill.

Losing teams generally place lower values on closers than contenders. Sherrill, though, helps stabilize a young Orioles staff that will only get younger as the team continues to promote its top pitching prospects." [Fox Sports]

Ted Keith ranks the O's No. 24 in his power rankings: "I don't want to read too much into one game, but if the Orioles core group of young players -- Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Nolan Reimold, etc. -- ever gels into a serious contender, Tuesday night's historic win over the Red Sox may well be seen as the catalyst. The Orioles rallied from a nine-run deficit, the largest in franchise history and the first time that a last place-team ever came from that far back to win against a first-place team. Even more impressive, they were still down by eight runs with only nine outs remaining, and didn't even need their turn at bat in the bottom of the ninth to win the game after putting up five runs in both the seventh and the eighth. Even if the game never has any greater significance, it was still one of the most exciting games of the season." [SI.com]

Stan McNeal says Nick Markakis should be the O's All-Star representative: "Markakis rates a slight nod over teammate Adam Jones only because he has been around longer." [Sporting News]

Ben Nicholson-Smith names Cesar Izturis as a possible trade candidate: "He'll earn $2.4MM this year and $2.6MM in 2010. He's on the DL, recovering from an apendectomy, and his slow recovery is making it less likely that he'll be traded." [MLBTradeRumors.com]

The Oriole Post writes on Koji Uehara: "Hopefully, Uehara can get the injury bug out of him and contribute late in the year, but again I'll say, maybe he should go in the bullpen as it doesn't look like he's anything more than a five inning starter." [The Oriole Post]
