Will Trembley erupt?
| | Comments (46)

MASN might want to give manager Dave Trembley a little time to cool down before slipping a microphone on him for the post-game interview.

A week should do it.

Trembley was fuming in the dugout after Juan Rivera's pop up with two outs in the seventh inning fell for a gift single that broke a 4-4 tie. He glared, he paced, he bit his lip.

Right now, he could probably chew through the team bus.

Brian Roberts didn't get to the ball. Nick Markakis apparently didn't call him off. Did the at-bat catch everyone by surprise?

And in the eighth, we've had an error on Brian Bass and another breakdown on Mike Napoli's grounder to short, with Melvin Mora arriving late to third base to take the throw. And the Angels have broken this one wide open, culminating in Vladimir Guerrero's three-run bomb off Bass, who isn't always at his best in tight situations.

Jim Palmer wondered whether the Orioles hadn't adjusted to West Coast time and were asleep.

We've probably seen worse losses, but this one will be ugly and embarrassing.

By the way, show of hands if you'd like Chone Figgins to play third base next season.

Figgins at 3rd would be fine. Just no long contracts. MLB should eliminate guaranteed contracts. These guys get long contracts, stink up the place and go fishin' (Walker).

Very ugly, and I don't expect another improbable come-from-behind rally in the 9th. At this point, I'm wondering why the team didn't hold onto Casey Blake, and I'd even take Chris Woodward or whoever the Brewers cast off next, Billy Hall or Craig Counsell, next year when they put Matt Gamel at third for good.

For the best coverage right now on the McNair story, check this out in the Nashville Tennessean: http://tennessean.com/article/20090704/SPORTS01/90704013. The femme fatale is hardly Helen of Troy, and I'm sorry to see Air McNair throw away what could have been 40 or 50 more years of noble community service and leadership on an emotionaly unstable 20-year-old.

Just another typical loss. When Rivera lifted that pop-up to right field, I can't say that I was surprised when the ball fell in. Just typical O's baseball. I've seen nothing different in my life -- I don't remember watching a winning Oriole team. I just simply turned off the TV. Getting out-hit and out-pitched we can live with for now. But seeing that loser brand of baseball being played is incredibly frustrating year in and year out. Little league teams can catch a pop-up like that. Just embarrassing -- and I've come to expect it.

>> "Will Trembley erupt?"

No doubt about it. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near Felix Pie tonight when Trembley unleashes h3ll on him.

Lucky Horseshoe said:

What was Palmer referring to by Brian "letting that ball play him"? I hear that used on a grounder when you get caught in no mans land unsure whether to move up or back but on a pop up? Just what does that refer to regarding a pop up? Seesm to me you go where you think it will come down. Is that letting the ball play you? Bad play, sure to get lots of play but seems to me that it is clear. Incoming OF should take the ball and Nick deferred to Brian.

Which brings us to a question we dont see around here. Right after "Do we have an ace or two in the organization coming to OPACY soon?" it seems to me that the most important question is "What do we have in Weiters, Jones and Nick?" Are they good players? Fringe all stars? Perrenial all stars? Hall of Famers? All have shown enough to prove they belong up here. The 2 OFers have shown signs they might be all star caliber players soon. They are likely to be our best players for the just beginning "generation". Are they Frank, Brooks, Eddie and Cal good? Singleton, Bumbry, Grich good? Rhetorical question as no one can know but seems to me that question comes right after the one about top of rotation pitching.

He should erupt and bench a few of the regulars and then he should be fired because he should be held accountable for the lack of effort as well.

This team is a train wreck and I truly hope fans stop showing up at Camden Yards. A few games with 5000 people in the stands will get someone's attention.

SHERNORIOLES said:

tREMBLEY WILL DO NOTHING!! tHAT BETWEEN BRIAN AND NICK HAPPENED EARLIER IN THE YEAR!! Evidentlly they didnot learn anything the first time!! The 2nd game they gave away this week. Not good!! This team is going backwards!!

Ed said:

Unreal. A few weeks back it was every hitter in the O's lineup that decided to stop hitting. Now it's the bullpen taking its turn giving up lead after lead. Baez and Bass have stunk of late with Johnson and Sherrill not far behind. Oh and now our $20 million combo of Markakis and Roberts can't catch a pop up and Mora can't remember what to do on a groundout to short with a man on 2nd. It's always something with this team....ugh.

Hopefully changes will occur before the trading deadline. Maybe these guys are too busy reading their own press clippings about the great turnaround in Baltimore. With continued lackadaisical play like from the last few weeks, who cares who gets called up. The new guys will only get dragged down by the toxic attitude in the clubhouse.

Tim M. said:

Absolutely NOT to Chone Figgins !!!!!!!!!!! It's funny you ask that Roch, because I just said tonight how I would hate having that guy on my team. This is a guy the Angels have tried to replace and upgrade on every year! Just because he plays well against a poor team like our O's doesn't mean he's good.
THAT may be the straw that broke my back with this team! NO NO NO !

greg said:

dt needed to take them off the field roberts, markakis after that play ,winning team dont play like that, these guys are better then that, make these guys know that not expectable

SHERNORIOLES said:

Trembley says he discusses things that go wrong in the game 24 hours later! Why??? I really dont think he is capable to manage any big league game!! He should of been throwing things on the field when the ball dropped between nick and brian!! GET MAD--SHOW THE FANS HE CAN GET MAD!!

Ray said:

Luke - I feel sorry for you that you have never seen winning Orioles baseball.

Chuck - I think you hit the trifecta.

Dempsey pretty much said it in the post-game. This team has the ingredients to win, but they just don't have the glue to tie it all together. The glue comes from the manager and the coaching staff.

Steve J said:

Dave's on the postgame show now...

Jim Hunter did not ask, "Will you erupt in the clubhouse later?"

I hope DT does, though. These guys want to "play in meaningful games in September," as Brian Roberts said last season. But they don't play with the mentality of winners. They think like they're losers who just get lucky every now and again.

Baez didn't pitch well, either. His inning of work was inexcusable.

I want to see Nick and B-Rob practicing pop ups with each other next home game. DT has got to lay down the law on these guys. They're not "kids" anymore, as the MASN commercial keeps telling me.

If they want to be grown up, Dave, it's time to take the soft gloves off. When these guys move to a team with Larussa, Torre, or Scioscia as mgr, they won't have the luxury to act the way they're acting here.

Ryan said:

Regardless, the O's need to revamp the bullpen. Johnson and Sherril, barring a trade, are the only reliable arms. Lets hope some of the kiddies are ready. Perez and others will hopefully be enough, but an investment in another steady quality righty will be important.

SHERNORIOLES said:

yOU KNOW I AM TIRED OF WATCHING A LOSING TEAM!!! By the time this team ever does start winning the fans will be gone!! Alot of them already have, Look at the orioles fans at the ballpark! Roberts, markakis, jones and wieters all faces of the organization!! THEY SUCK!! I want more!!
I like to see the manager do something. That play between brian and nick someone should of sat out the rest of the game!!! AWFUL!! embarrassing!!!

Steve J said:

Lucky Horseshoe: Jim Palmer had already done what I did: changed the channel to the Miss Hawaiian Tropic International Pageant. He thought the ball played B-Rob?? Even the broadcasters weren't mentally into this game.

Seriously... this is not a wife problem. It's not a west-coast time problem. We've seen this kind of play all year. DT needs to tougher on these guys.

Ray said:

Tim M. - No to Chone Figgins. Lfetime batting average of .292. OPS lifetime is .748. Good for 35-50 stolen bases a year. You don't accunulate numbers like this against one team. Has a gun for an arm at 3b and his manager is pushing him for a Gold Glove this year. Most of all he plays with fire and emotion, something this team severely lacks. It is true that every year the Angels have tried to replace him, but he just won't go away. Maybe you would prefer picking up Melvin's option.

Ray said:

Roch - I didn't really detect much difference in Dave in the dugout. Other than the fact that he was actualy standing, pacing a bit. He certainly didn't seem like a person who was about to erupt in the post-game interview. Just another day at the office. Let's move on.

rich said:

Isn't it becoming obvious that DT will not be here next year? You can argue he isn't making the mistakes but you know who always will take the blame. I think the only question is whether he makes it through this season.

Doug said:

I can't stand Figgins, so yeah I want him. He kills us, and we NEED to get back to one of our biggest strengths when Patterson was here...base stealing. If this team would start running some more, our offense would be even more deadly.

DJ said:

It seems to me that question really isn't about whether or not Dave Trembley will erupt in mindless rage in front (or even out of sight of) the cameras, but a two-parter:

1) Will he do something about it at all?

2) Will the players listen to him?

We keep hearing that Trembley likes to do things behind closed doors, doesn't like to blame players and may even play favorites with veterans. Well, considering the mistakes that have plagued the team all year not only keep happening but appear to be spreading, either nothing is being done or the players aren't listening.

I think that people don't want to see an eruption for the players' benefit as much for their own. They want to see something to confirm that whatever message the manager is trying to send is getting through.

Right now, I don't think anyone who doesn't have direct access to the clubhouse can say that with any kind of confidence.

I don't necessarily want to see Trembley relieved of his duties (at least not yet; I think he should be evaluated in full at the end of the season and keep or lose his job based on two-and-a-half years of decisions and results). However, I think that unless the team starts playing better, both winning games and making better decisions, he could lose his job sooner.

dan the man said:

Roch I'd love to hear your thoughts regarding the state of the team and all this criticism that O's fans are piling on Brian Roberts. Does he truly deserve it or is the losing magnifying things to only make it look like he's not hustling? And Markakis? I'm looking for some stabilizing, non-reactionary commentary on this whole situation. What's really going on? It seems like there's no reason this team can't be a .500 team, but they are just waiting for something (the big 3?) before they really start to focus and try to win ballgames.

This game kind of ruined an otherwise great night for me. I'm legitimately depressed and wondering what exactly happened that we're playing worse defense this year. These two guys are fan favorites and they're letting us down big time. I'm tired of listening to and reading these negative reactionary posts, but what else can we do? I love Trembley, but it's intensely frustrating that the team has not improved fundamentally under him. Can any manager have success with this squad or are there more cancers in this clubhouse than we previously thought in just Tejada and Bedard?

shoreman said:

Dustin Pedroia of the Sux would have ran right over Markakis to get that ball! What a half a$$ attempt by them both. The face of the franchise and the LEADER by example! PLEASE trade Roberts while you can get something for him!!

jekyll & hyde said:

I don't like these comments by Roberts:

"Roberts, a two-time All-Star and the second-longest tenured member of the team, answered the media promptly after the game. And when he did, he subtly reminded everyone that the Orioles are still learning.

"It's a building process. It still is," he said. "Some days we're playing better than others. That's the way the game goes, but we certainly want to continue to improve. We feel like we can play with anybody. We've shown it. We just haven't come up with the big hits, the big plays, the big pitches in some of those games."

What does he mean "It's a building process"? Aren't they major league players who can make routine plays? I don't like the "Oh well" attitude and hope some of these players who are getting paid a lot of money will wake up and smell the coffee!

Russ said:

We stink right now and we aren't playing to the level of our talent.

Bill said:

Trembley should bench Markakis, Robers AND Mora for tomorrow's game as punishment...but he won't, because he likes being the nice guy rather than being a winning manager. I had been in Dave's corner from day one, but honestly, the "nice guy" approach isn't working, and I don't think it ever will.

Earl Weaver was not a "nice guy", many who played for him would say he was a complete "A-Hole", but he WON. You think Earl would of been the calm and cool manager with that type of play in his day? He probably would of benched both for a week! If the O's ever want to be a winning team they need a manager that is not afraid to hurt a players feelings and call them out when needed.

I don't care how many top prospects come up, they will not win with this type of baseball being played EVER. Bring back Davey! No way he would be putting up with this BS!!

robert said:

No he didnt erupt. Frankly if I dont hear he has comedown pretty rough on the sleepwalking duo I will be horrified. I went from strongly in the Trembley camp last week to utterly beliving it might be time for him to go.

MacPhail wanted to establish a reputation for this ball club. All they are right now is known as a dumb, error prone bunch. Even if they had less talent but tried as hard as a Billy Ripken or even a Nolan Reimold we could embrace them as loveable loosers. Now all we get is dumb, dumb and sloppy play. From our long term vets. Man Tejada was a hugely bad influence on Roberts.

Why wont he bunt or run balls out? How many basehits has Reimold gotten by beating the play by a foot? That man runs! Roberts a speed merchant coast. Cries about how hard it is to keep your head in the game on a losing team on the Anita Marks show as he puts on these horrible displays. He can at least try 100%.

Trade his butt. Why does he swing for the fences anyway? Dude is 5'9" inches if he is lucky.

Alan said:

What would the Orioles be without Brian Roberts? I hear that asked so often. IMHO they would be a much better team,he has quit on them early this year! I think it is affecting some of the other players, poor Brian he wants to play for a winner. Poor baby.

eric said:

ed is right, guys like wieters, reimhold and the young pitchers are learning how to lose right now.most of the players on the O's have never been on a winning team.i keep hearing that the O's will be competitive in a few years, but i doubt it.like ed said its toxic.

Ryan said:

Roch- Obviously numbers tell the tale eventually, but, do you think that Corey Thomas, or have you heard scouts say that, he is a legit 3B prospect that will be an Oriole 1 day? And, again, the numbers will say, but how far away? Could he get a promotion this year and 2 next year and make a run in Spring Training 2011?
I didn't realize he is only 20, but he seems to be pretty good with the bat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't heard a peep about that guy. No idea. Only know he was in the Gulf Coast League last year. - Roch

Shaun said:

DT will DO nothing. Nice posing for the cameras. The players dont want to play for him! I question how many want to play for Baltimore. I wonder how big of a smile Roberts would have when he finds out hes traded? And again the guys that care and play hard continue to sit

John said:

The O's are headed to thier yearly meltdown already. This team has more talent than the record indicates.Right now the only interest is if Tillman gets yanked from his next start. As much as I hate to say it,Berken probably needs to go back down to get his confidence back up. I'm pretty sure what's going on now is mental. He's pitching defensively.

Boy you have to wonder what Trembley will do today for relief if Hill takes an early exit.

shawnopines said:

TimM are you serious?

Chone Figgins is not a good player?

He is only hitting 315 this season, he would be leading the orioles in hitting if he were here.

Yeah I would hate having a guy who is solid glove, great speed ( 25+ steals a season ) great batting average ( lifetime 292). I am glad you are not running this team, just because you dislike someone does not mean he is not a good player.

I would have no problems seeing Chone playing third for us next year. Offer him a three year deal and bring him to bmore and thats another whole filled for next several years.

SHERNORIOLES said:

hAS ANYONE BEEN WATCHING GARRETT OLSEN??Yesterday 6.1 innings 6 strikeouts 2runs against redsox in boston!! We kept Guthrie who would serve a homerun ball to my grandmother!! Maybe it was the coaching!! But then again Seattle's defense is alot better!! Trembley said the orioles were going to get better defensively--did anyone see the game last night!! BLEW ANOTHER 4 RUN LEAD!! This team is really really hard to watch but does anyone care if the fans stop watching!! They havent in 12 years!!!!!!!!!

karl said:

That is one of the worst games I have seen Roberts play. Whys is the chip on his shoulder getting so big? That flip play to Andino was terrible, two throws in from the outfield got away from him, the ball that "played him." Roberts and Markakis both have very who gives hoot demeanors, and these are the guys we tied up long term. Thanks for the effort guys.

Howard said:

First, the hitters seem to fall asleep after getting an early 4 run lead, and then the fielders seem to fall asleep. Ok, everyone makes mistakes, but Markakis not calling off Roberts on that pop up was huge. That wasn't Roberts ball (although, yes, if he wasn't called off he should have tried for it - at least in theory) but I don't blame him for looking for Markakis to catch it. That ball was easily Markakis' ball, and there have been enough collisions on balls like that to be a little gun shy, so I don't blame Roberts. Outfielders always have to call off the infielders on those plays - easier for the outfielder, and it avoids collisions. Frustrating to watch, especially on those late west coast games. I'll have to start DVRing these games to avoid loss of sleep and sanity!

vernon said:

I have been a big supporter of Trembley--but he can't seem to get the players to play good fundamental baseball and isn't that what is suppose to be his strong suit? I am not expecting miracles just sound fundamentals--

SHERNORIOLES said:

This team is a joke!! Looking at some plays again from last night!! Unbelievable!! We are the laughing stock of the AL EAST! At least make the other other team earn the win!! We are in a league all by ourselves!! To think i stayed up to watch that mess!!! I am not wasting my electric!!! They have to start winning on the road! That is 81 games. Not that they are stellar at home but come on!

Bill In Elkton said:

I've seen and heard some sloppy playing going on and when we've lost games recently, I go right to the box score to see who made errors which usually cost us games.
Yesterday I'm watching Game Of The Week on Fox, Mets vs Phillies, and there's is Omir Santos, (O in 08) trying to one hand catch a ball that bounces right off his glove. They kept replaying it over and over. Just sloppy play. I don't get why players don't always catch with both hands.
Speaking of Fox, why do they always show, Red Sox, Yankees or Mets on the east coast? It's almost always one of them. I think they showed a Rays game a couple weeks ago though.

Brummie_Oriole said:

I fell asleep after the top of the 5th thinking we had the game, considering how well we were hitting and Berken was throwing.

Roch, I know in my heart the best thing for this team and for brian roberts would be a change of scenery.I know it's hard for anybody to understand my logic, but in the long term it will benefit everybody. He can't stand the losing any longer, it has reduced him down to being just a average player something that he doesn't deserve to be. .

The idea was for the team to gradually improve under Trembles - fundamental baseball, some young blood, back to the O's way, etc...

All I see is after two years under Trembles this team still can't handle the basic plays, can't run the bases, can't lay down a bunt, can't throw a strike....

At some point you have to say - we need some real leadership who can shape things up. It's not gonna happen with Trembles.

adam said:

Trembley will do NOTHING. He never does and never will. He is the reason this team has no spark. In the past week there has been about 4 or 5 times where any good manager would have gotten himself tossed. Nope not calm and relaxed DT. Bring back the Earl Weaver days.

Who ever told this team that they are stars?????? I am pretty sure any of my local Southern York County teams could win a 3 game series against these underachievers. I do not wanna hear the time zone excuss. You are a paid professional, your only job is to play Baseball. Beyond that you only need to get ready for the next game.

This team needs better coaches. Dig up Earl. Bring back Sammy P. I wanna see a coach walk out of that dugout pointing his finger at the Ump, not crossing his arms on his chest.

Let's go O's and build an attitude. Someone in the coaching staff please grow a pair.
