Checking on Koji
| | Comments (18)

Rather than continue to respond to individual questions about Koji Uehara, I figured this was a good time to bring up his name.

At least he hasn't been forgotten.

Uehara is working with a physical therapist while the Orioles are on the road. He's expected to begin a throwing program early next week after being re-examined by team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens.

The Orioles intend to shift Uehara to the bullpen if he's ready to pitch in September. Manager Dave Trembley could go with a six-man rotation once rosters expand, but it won't include Uehara.

Also, Dennis Sarfate's rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk will continue through Aug. 13. The club will re-evaluate him at that point.

Sarfate has allowed seven earned runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings with the Tides. He's walked one, struck out five and surrendered two home runs.

will we see Sweet Lou again this season??

If so, not until September. - Roch

The way the rotation looks to be shaping up for next year it seems Uehara will end up in the bullpen.

Sarfate is a fringy guy. I am not sure he has role in the bullpen any longer. Do you see his positon solid for next season?

Any word on the PTBNL in the Chad Bradford deal?

I know this is off-topic, but I'm a post behind. I am personally giving Bill Rowell the benefit of the doubt. While he hasn't shown much yet, he is still just 20 years old and at High-A Frederick. I think we should give him another three years before we label him a bust. He has too much talent to give up on him already, even if he hasn't shown it yet.

Good to hear about Koji.

Roch,

I know this is a hard question to answer, but in 5 years are we going to be saying that the Tejada haul of Scott, Patton, Albers, Sarfarte and Constanzo wasn't all that it was cracked up to be?

Because I'm moving in that direction.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's possible. Too soon to fully evaluate it. But it was time for Tejada to go, and considering that the Mitchell Report was about to be released, and the mess that went with it (not to mention his declining range and stats), teams weren't lining up to offer their best talent for him. - Roch

a couple people have written and mentioned the jones is having some problems with his knees. and know i've read reimold is banged up a little. if jones is sore wouldn't it make more sense to give him a break in toronto where they play on the carpet. same for reimold. not that i'd expect trembley to think that way. any idea what jones' physical condition is?

Not to be a pain, (I know it probably feels like you can never fulfill our thirst for knowledge about this team) but do we know anything else about Lou Montanez? Caught myself wondering when he would come back yesterday.

Last I heard, and wrote, he was recovering from thumb surgery and not expected to return before Sept., if at all. - Roch

Roch- Do you have any information on Lou Montanez ?

Nothing at the moment beyond what I've written. If he returns, not expected to be before mid-Sept. Recovering from thumb surgery. Haven't heard anything else. - Roch

Something tells me it's entirely possible that we have seen the last of Dennis Sarfate pitching in the Majors. Which would be disappointing, because he had a pretty good year for us out of the pen last year.

They did originally speculate that his injury could be career threatening, and thankfully that wasn't the case, but who knows if he will ever be able to regain his previous form.

Without Sherrill, do the O's have interest in BJ Ryan now? He was released by the Cubs today.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They already passed on him once and they needed a lefty late-inning guy, so doubt they'd have interest now. - Roch

Brian, Halladay is not a free agent after this year, so I'm pretty sure he's not in "protect my arm mode" as you put it. Also, he threw a 103 pitch complete game. Just the facts man.

I stand corrected. I know the Jays tried like hell to trade him, I assumed he was a potential FA due to that effort.
103 pitches & gave up 5 runs. Sounds beatable to me.

Sarfate can stay in Norfolk until Sept with those stats. Mick deserves to come back before Sarfate at this point.

Ugghhhhhhhh. Sloppy sloppy play.

Berken & Hernandez need more time at AAA.

It sucks but the O's should consider signing a vet to finish the season. The continue to lack depth so you have to do what you have to do. Bottom line, they need to protect & continue to groom their young pitchers.

Hernandez & Berken cannot be left to bleed on the MLB level or they could be ruined before its too late.

How's John Parrish doing?

Haven't heard anything about him. He's certainly not expected to pitch again this year. - Roch

I'm telling you, Roch, Koji Uehara would make for a killer closer. He is death on lineups the first time through the lineup and gets more hittable each time through the lineup. Check out his stats the first time through the order -- they're incredible. He's only walked like three and given up two homers. Those are the two keys to a good closer: very few walks and keeping the ball in the ballpark. He was a closer in Japan.

Try him as a closer in September. It can't hurt.
