Now we know which outfielder will be joining the Orioles once rosters expand.

Or which one won't be joining them.

The Orioles have traded Joey Gathright from Triple-A Norfolk to Triple-A Pawtucket, the Boston Red Sox's top affiliate, for a PTBNL or cash.

Gathright was batting .329 with 11 doubles, two triples, 20 RBIs and 24 stolen bases in 80 games at Norfolk. The Orioles acquired him from the Chicago Cubs on May 8 for Ryan Freel.

Gathright does more than jump cars. He also jumps teams.

Perhaps this is an indication that Jeff Fiorentino, batting .307 with 25 doubles, five triples, 12 homers and 64 RBIs in 100 games at Norfolk, will have his contract purchased. His 12 homers lead the Tides.

It is 7:02 and I am watching what must be one of MASN's most embarrassing moments!

So basically when you boil it down, we got cash for Ryan Freel?

WAY TO WORK THE PHONES ANDREW!

I guess Ole Pete will be happy because this will improve the P/L statement.

Now get Hendrickson and Baez off this team!

Roch,

Is this one of those deals where the player has done everything he could in the organization and had been a good soldier so now he is being rewarded by playing in a playoff race while showcasing his talent, or is it just a matter of clearing space on the 40 man roster?

Can't image Joey was going to get many at bats here in September, though I guess the same could be said about his time in Boston. I have not heard to many negative things about Joey.

He wasn't on the 40. Maybe it means they were planning to call up Fiorentino and figured there was no sense keeping Gathright in the organization. And this does give him a chance to contribute somewhere else. - Roch

Cash for anyone that constantly runs into walls and is nothing more than a pinch runner or "starters day off replacement"

Another minor but smart move by AM. Keep it up.

So this move almost makes it as if Ryan Freel in an Oriole Uniform never happened, huh?
Yessssss.

Just remember, we got "cash" for Bradford last year, then when we traded Zaun to the same team this year, we got a better caliber player (Rhyne Hughes) in return, because they remembered that we let them get away with a steal last year. So let's just see how this plays out. In the end, Gathright was nothing more than depth who wasn't even with the club, so anything we get for this guy is nice. Would rather see Fiorentino get the shot, as he's younger and has more prospects.

Looking ahead to 2010- Baltimore is in the market for 1B 3B SP Lefty RP.
how bout R. Branyan for 1B, he's gonna hit .250ish with 30 homeruns, and shouldn't command too much(2yr deal 5-8 mil per?)At 3B C. Figgins,J. Lackey or J. Washburn at SP. A trade of Pie or Montanez and a low level prospect or two, should net a pretty decent lefty relief guy. Our line-up would possibly look like:

3B Figgins
2B Roberts
RF Markakis
1B Branyan
CF Jones
LF Reimold
C Weiters
DH Scott
SS Izturiz

Bn Wiggington
Bn Pie/Montanez
Bn Andino

SP Washburn/Lackey
SP Bergesen
SP Guthrie
SP Hernandez
SP Tillman/ Matusz

RP Berken, Bass, Uehara, Baez ,Mickilo, Ray

Gathright became expendible due to the improving play of Felix Pie. That's all there is to it ! No reason to keep a back up center fielder now or next year .

So long Joey, we hardly knew ye. I was so hoping to see him come up and play for the O's. Dog gone it Roch. I'm sure he's happy to go to Boston minors.

If the o's get a vet starter in the offseason,it'll be somone in the Gil Menche mode not Lackey.I think Figgins will stay with the Angels but we really don't need a 3 year deal guy for 3rd anyway.I don't see why they don't just try Turner there in spring training and let him and Bell battle it out long term.

Bottledwieters,
Your ready to trade Pie or Montanez, and a prospect for a lefty relief pitcher? That's a little much, don't ya think? What's wrong with Mark Hendricksen? He's been pretty solid since moving to the pen.

I don't know why the O's seem to give players away like that. They gave Chris Gomez away a few years ago for nothing, then Bradford last year, now Gathright. Seems like we should have gotten more for him, maybe use him as part of a package deal for a 1st or 3rd baseman. I don't see the advantage of giving him to Boston.

I think Andy should be talking to Tampa Bay about Pena. They gave Kasmir away, maybe they'd like to part ways with him too. I'd give up a couple mid-level prospect for him.

NickB said:

There's no question that we kept the right guy. Fiorentino has some pop in his bat, Gathright has none (12 HR's vs. 0). Jeff was a much more highly regarded prospect, not that that means a lot these years later, but it does show that the "experts" considered his ceiling higher. He looks like he may finally be turning into the ballplayer he was expected to be, or... at least half of it. He's also 2 years younger.

One of them was going to go.

Yeah, that Ryan Freel, with his FIFTH team in the last year, is really a hot commodity. You jerk.

Brummie,* don't throw a paddy,**
I noticed you posted at 12:07 AM, your time. Are your handlers careful not to feed you after midnight, and do they keep you dry at all times? I suspect that you may be sneaking a few scones and savaries.

*A study was conducted in 2008 in U.K. where people were asked to grade the intelligence of a person based on their accent and the Brummie accent was ranked as the least intelligent accent. It even scored lower than being silent.
For instance, despite the city's cultural and innovative history, its industrial background (as depicted by the arm-and-hammer in Birmingham's coat of arms) has led to a muscular and unintelligent stereotype: a "Brummagem screwdriver" or "Brummie screwdriver" is UK slang for a hammer. (Wikipedia)

Why would we trade Hendrickson? This guy is doing the job he was brought here to do. I played against this guy up here in York when he pitched in the Susquahanna league. Do you understand how hard it is to read the ball out of his hand? (No you don't)

He is what 6'6"? By the time he let's the ball go his hand is about 4 or 5 feet closer to the plate. They guy can pitch and he is a well needed VET.

Boy that Ryan Freel is such a great player he's been traded four times already this season...but I digress.
Chris Tillman, Adam Jones, Josh Bell, Steve Johnson, (The Bedard trade that keeps on giving), Felix Pie, Cla Meredith, Kam Mickolio, Troy Patton, along with the others you've brought in to help fill the farm. WAY TO WORK THE PHONES ANDREW!!! THANK YOU MR MacPHAIL FOR DOING A GREAT JOB IN BUILDING THE FUTURE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER A DECADE!

Who would he have replaced here? Reimold? Jones? Markakis? Pie? I like Gathright, but I'll take the aforementioned players over him. Interesting to find he was traded to a division 'rival'. Wonder what we get in return.

WOW why did they do that?
