Roster move official
The Orioles have purchased the contract of Triple-A Norfolk first baseman Michael Aubrey, the former first-round pick of the Cleveland Indians who was acquired earlier this summer for, yes, a PTBNL.
Aubrey batted .287 with 13 doubles and 23 RBIs in 44 games for the Tides and .290 with 29 doubles and 52 RBIs in 101 combined games between Norfolk and Triple-A Columbus.
Aubrey was the 11th overall pick out of Tulane University in 2003. He will wear No. 9.
If you've lost count, Aubrey will be the 19th player to make his Orioles debut this season.

number 9 that's a good number for a guy just getting called up
Roch,
Thanks for the update and just wanted to thank you for the work you do for us. Looks like you've taken a lot of flac for no good reason today and just wanted to remind you a lot of us appreciate how you keep us up to date! I'm blamin it on the Summer heat and lousy play.
how long will Aubrey be up here? like will he be up here for next season or what. Will he be in the line-up tonight?. When will Brandon Snyder come up to play first?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No way to project right now whether he's on the team next season. I'm waiting to receive the lineup, but he's a left-handed hitter and the Rays are starting David Price, so I expect Wigginton at first. We'll see. Snyder might be up in Sept. - Roch
Interesting.
Apparently the Orioles are having trouble finding numbers? Just days after the Sherrill trade........Matusz comes up and gets number 52.
Now a week or w/e after the Zaun trade.......Aubrey comes up and gets 9?
So when Snyder or Hughes comes up in early Sep I guess we'll see a 17....
I'd feel better about this if it were Oscar Salazar, not Michael Aubrey, being called up to replace Huff. Oh, well . . . didn't work out that way.
Roch, any idea who the PTBNL will be? Why are they waiting so long to name the player? Can it be a player on the DL?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It could end up being cash. Really don't know. - Roch
Sounds like he did jack for the Clippers. Either that or they had way better players that needed time ahead of him. Speaks volumes about our farm system/franchise that we acquire some 1st round bust for a PTBNL and then promote him to our MLB roster.
Any idea who the PTBNL in that trade will be? I assume they would trade minor leaguers and we have a ton of young arms as everyone knows, but then again, we also have a lot of catchers in the system and Wieters isn't going anywhere.
The 19th? Wow, that's A LOT of new blood on this team.
Luckily most of them have been rookies and not like the beginning of the season with the Adam Eaton experiment.
For all of the people in the "O's are cheap" crowd, an excerpt from the chat at BA today:
"Jim (WV): Where would you rank the Oriole's draft class? Who in the draft do you see making it into the top 10 prospect list?
Jim Callis: *The Orioles were very aggressive*, and I have counted, *but they may have had more total over-slot signings than any club*. Hobgood and Givens could make the Top 10, and Berry and Coffey will push for the Top 10 in the future once they're fully healthy. They obviously are very high on Ohlman as well, and last year's Top 10 has graduated several players to the majors."
Now it's time for the "proffesional scout" crowd to disparage all the players that they have never seen.
I hope he is as good as the last real player that wore that #. His name would be Mr. Brady Anderson..........

You make a valid point that the team has been agressive in signing amateur talent; however, I think it's time that start spending some money on established talent, too. It doesn't have to be stupid money, it just needs to be enough to fill the holes with quality players.
Even with the Nick and Brian extentions this team will have about 25M to spend next year and still be at this year's payroll level. Let's see what they do with it.
So Aubrey has been in the minors for 6 years? Is that something of a red flag for the 11th overall pick? Has he been healthy the whole time or are there other factors? I guess the Indians liked him if he's been in their system this long.
Roch, they can issue #9 to anyone they want, but my wife said there will only be one #9 EVER. Brady Anderson, of course. When we went to see the O's back in '97, I wondered why I only had pictures of Brady taken from behind. Then I put two and two together and realized who had the camera during that time. Both Brady and Scott Erikson had a lot of from behind camera shots.

I agree with you as well, and they obviously would have spent big money on Teix had he been willing to play here. But spending big money on 30+ free agents doesn't make much sense when you are rebuilding. This offseason I would expect and hope for them to look for a couple of higher priced veterans, but it would not be smart to overspend on mediocre players just to say that they spent money/signed veterans.
Aubrey is a warm body. Nothing more, nothing less. He won't be very good. Just a young guy to try to keep Snyder's seat warm.
Why didn't they bring up the 1B thy got from Tampa Bay, who seems to have better numbers than Aubrey?
KyleProBoller....since I have actually SEEN Michael Aubrey play a ton over the last three years, and I am guessing that before today you had never heard of him.... I could school you ass on how wrong you are about your claim that "he didn't do jack for the Clippers"....
But I suspect you won't take the time to read it. Oh, and I've already offered my scouting report on the guy and you clearly didn't read THAT, either.
O's got the thumbs up from CNNSI on their draft + signings

Wait so, basically replacing Aubrey Huff is Michael Aubrey? What are the odds of replacing an Aubrey with an Aubrey? And they're both first basemen? Strange.
I don't know the Indians depth chart but MAYBE there is a logjam at 1B?
Rhyne Hughes: .313/.361/.533 in AAA
Feel free..

KPB, your blog-cred just hit an all-time low; and, now that you have incurred the wrath of the Avenging Harpy-Oriole, I fear for your well-being . Grown men have been known to fall apart in the face of a withering post by amarie. You may recall her threatened fury if an offending poster failed to curtail his over-use of the ever-popular ellipsis.
Amarie thinks that you ignored her analysis of M.Aubrey, a breech of good form that may have dire consequences for you. Your only hope may be to find amarie's post about Aubrey, read it, and offer up a conciliatory post praising her insights. Good luck with that.
Thanks for the video of Aubrey, Roch, although the way he wears his socks demonstrates he's not major league ready yet.
I have been reading your blogs since the first day on the Sun's site and enjoy your fine coverage of my favorite team and your wit as well. I have never posted before because I figured I'd end up acting childish toward some of your more immature posters.
I've been an Oriole fan since '54 and attended my first game in '55. I've seen them good and bad and have loved them always.
What moved me to post this time was that I drove 400 miles last weekend to see the Tides play Charlotte twice. The only player that appeared to have a major league bat was Michael Aubrey. He hits almost everything hard and on a line. Brandon Snyder was overmatched; Justin Turner was swinging poorly; Jeff Fiorentino was fed a diet of high, inside pitches and couldn't handle them. Michael Aubrey hit a variety of pitches and hit them all well. Please give the guy a chance. If he's had injury problems in the past, they could be over now. Living in Alabama gives me the opportunity to see the Braves a lot. Matt Diaz was considered to be a AAAA player until Bobby Cox gave him a chance and he's turned out pretty well. Give Aubrey a chance and I believe he'll be a pleasant surprise.
