Two items of potential interest (make that three)
| | Comments (5)

Lou Montanez went 1-for-3 today in his second game with the Gulf Coast Orioles, his first stop on an injury rehab assignment that also will take him to Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie before the minor league season ends.

Montanez, recovering from thumb surgery, is still likely to go on the 60-day disabled list. The Orioles are trying to get him ready for winter ball.

Also, I checked with a team official tonight, and there were no discussions about claiming left-hander Scott Kazmir off waivers from Tampa Bay.

Doubts existed that the Rays would strike a deal with a division team. And interest wasn't exactly strong on this end.

I bring this up only because multiple readers have asked and I didn't want to leave anyone hanging.

Don Werner, who's coaching first base in John Shelby's absence, will stay with the club as an extra coach until the minor league season ends. Triple-A Norfolk pitching coach Mike Griffin will take his place on Sept. 8, as MLB permits one extra coach on every team. Werner will report to the fall instructional league.

Thorne as the commentator???? Well we know he'll be rooting hard against them!

Somewhere Jim "Yankee Fan" Hunter is crying over not getting to call the series.

Roch,

I regret I haven't been able to read the blog much lately so I'm sorry if I bring up a point you've addressed recently, but I have a few questions about the future since roster expansion is happening.

With Brandon Snyder tearing the cover off the ball, why did we see Aubrey instead? Also, why did the Orioles pursue Bell and Aubrey? I know you can never have too many good players, but I though Snyder would have been the call-up over Aubrey when Huff was traded since he's been an organizational guy.

So that leads me to the question of what The Orioles do next year? They keep talking about getting a big bat and a legit ace, but at the same time they keep talking about the guys they've got in on the farm to fill the holes.

I mean the only holes on this team at this point are first and third base and short-stop in the long run. With Aubrey, Bell and Snyder all waiting in the wings I don't understand where a big bat comes in.

The O's will have the best outfield in baseball in the next year or two with Reimold, Jones and Markakis. They have their franchise catcher in Wieters and Roberts just signed an extension.

First and third is pretty much it as far as a need so what happens to the young talent if a big bat is really going to be pursued in free agency?

Not sure where Bell factors into this question, since he's a third baseman. They must feel that Snyder needs more time in Triple-A. He scuffled early. And he's going to play in the AFL, so he'll get his at-bats there and report to spring training with a chance to win the job. - Roch

If we put in a claim on Kazmir, wouldn't that have blocked the trade? Why not put in a claim and only do it for the waiver price if there was any interest in him?

Because there didn't appear to be much interest and Tampa could have just pulled him back. And I guess the Orioles weren't worried about him being traded. - Roch

What?!?! Sweet Lou went 1-3 in a rookie league??? He's clearly overmatched. We should totally trade him. I'm pretty sure the KC scouts were there thinking it'd be a fair trade for Greinke, straight up. All this clamoring for Lou to come back and he goes 1-3 in his SECOND game?? He sucks. Let's trade him. If he can't hold his own against 18yr olds, he's totally a bust.
