Zimmermann, Kearns and Flores injury updates
Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann had successful surgery on his pitching elbow earlier today in Southern California.
"Jordan has successful Tommy John surgery today," acting GM Mike Rizzo said. "Our team Dr. Wiemi Douoguih and Dr. Lewis Yocum performed the operation."
Zimmermann will travel back to DC on Thursday to begin his rehab. He'll be in a splint for seven days before beginning range of motion exercises.
As long as the rehab goes according to plan, Zimmermann should be ready to go for Spring Training of 2011.
In other injury news, outfielder Austin Kearns, who had a procedure on his right thumb, is expected to begin baseball activity in a couple of week, according to Rizzo.
Catcher Jesus Flores began his throwing program today. Before the Nationals took batting practice, Flores was throwing with one of the trainers while bench coach Par Corrales looked on.
Once the Nationals head to Chicago, St. Louis and San Diego next week, Flores will go to Florida to continue his rehab.
Rizzo expects Flores to get some Instructional League action in before playing winter ball. The plan is to have Flores ready and 100% healthy for Spring Training next season.
