Career night for Wieters
| | Comments (16)

Matt Wieters has driven in five runs tonight, the most in his brief major league career.

His three-run shot in the eighth inning off former Orioles reliever Chad Bradford capped a tremendous night for the rookie catcher, who also doubled and singled.

Wieters has six homers on the season. This was the first one that didn't go to the opposite field. Wieters reached the flag court in right field.

Jason Berken stands to be the winner after allowing five runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He blanked the Rays after the third and out-pitched Jeff Niemann.

Ah, the ol' reverse-lock theory.

If this lead holds up, Berken will be 3-0 with two no-decisions in his last five starts. He hasn't lost since Aug. 18 at Tropicana Field.

The 6 1/3 innings are the most he's logged since June 18 against the New York Mets.

Something tells me you won't ever see him hit for the cycle LOL.

Hopefully this is the first of many nights like this to come...

Roch

What a night for Wieters. I took notice that Wieters hit his homerun off of Bradford, who I believe that the Orioles traded to the Rays, but can you remind me who the Orioles received in return?? I couldn't help but ask that question.

Anyways, this doesn't get said nearly enough on this website, but thanks for all you do Roch.

Re: Lack of triples for Roberts.

1. He is the leadoff hitter. You are not to be the first out of an inning at 3rd base. No chances.

2. He probably finds it just as easy to steal third than risk the out.

Not everything but a couple of mitigating factors

Berken baffles me. He gives up the big innings early, but then he bears down and gets outs and stays in the game. What's the difference? Lack of focus on his part? Lack of focus of the other team to put him away?

Great job by Matt Wieters tonight. As I said before, tonight might be his coming out moment. It would be great if he could finish strong. He's never played this many games in a year before, so if he can finish strong it says a lot about him.

Nice win tonight O's!

we need MW to finish strong, show that the scouts knew what they were talking about. So much of this team's future depends on him developing into a true elite player.

I heard that in addition to the 3 RBI on the home run off Bradford, Wieters is getting a few RBI to be named later. Any insight into that, Roch?

Now that is something to get excited about. If a few of the guys projected to be great (Wieters, Jones) combined with the already surprisingly steady play of Reimold and the mainstays Roberts and Markakis, a 1B slugger could really catapult this team into the mix. I love the fact that we can now dream in earnest, but there is still a ton of ground to cover. I don't think is HAS to be a 3 year project at this point, but without additions that's what it looks like. Regardless, go birds both orange and purple!

Berken and Wieters are really starting to come on strong for this team. It gives me a glimmer of hope for next year ( despite the mismanaged FO).

And furthermore...

Some quick analysis of next year....

1. Tillman and Matusz must combine for 30 wins

2. Rest of rotation ....25 wins

3. Bullpen 27 wins

Final tally 82-80

Trembley gets extension as Andy realizes next year is not the year

DT moves on at end of next year...new manager for the big push in 2011

Wieters..Jones..Reimold..Markakis..Scott 100 Home Runs

Brummie....get's job back as Andy's caddy..promises to clean his balls between holes this time.

You heard it here first.

Tonight is the reason I don't want to see Trembley go. The players haven't given up on him like they have on previous managers. After all, Maddon was around for a couple losing seasons before his players broke out last year ...

Hey, Roch!
Who did the O's get back in the Chad Bradford trade???

Just kidding!!

On another note, Pie saw 32 pitches in 5 AB's. His battle late in the game was epic. I don't think any Oriole has had such a battle for a single plate appearance. We ave been seeing a lot more pitches recently and I think the proof of the games we're in or winning dictates that it's a recipe for success.

We saw 161 pitches tonight compared to 115 for the Rays. A couple of times vs. the Yanks and Sox we were around 180+

Just saying, we win with patience. Ty should not have a place on this squad next year btw. I'm officially anti-Ty on 2010 O's. This year was one thing, not next year. Keep Aubrey over him in a second.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Brummie,

Glimmer of hope?

Could that be because of the stockpile of young talent our front office has acquired?

Could that be because we have so much young pitching, Berken is highly unlikely to remain in the rotation? Could it be that we drafted, and SIGNED, Wieters? He sure was a sign-ability pick, as was Matusz ...

Oh wait you're not gonna blast the kid for being terrible for his first 2-3 innings? You are making progress, congrats. At least you know how to spell his name right, unlike that idiot who claims to have watched him at Bowie and above for almost 2 years. It's Berken with an E jackie. There is NO I in Berken jackie. Just like there is no E in ridiculous. You should know that, it's your middle name.

Sounds like a job Brummie's ball knowledge is good for. He is probably the best ball washer in England.

I was proud to hear ESPN and MLB Network mention Wieters. All about his great night at the plate. I hope we hear his name mentioned many more times. He does seem to hit better lefthanded.
