Orioles and Yankees lineups (Mora scratched)
| | Comments (25)

Melvin Mora was back in the lineup, which meant he would have passed Doug DeCinces and moved into second place for most games played at third base for the Orioles. But Mora was a late scratch because of a sore right elbow, so I'll send along the corrected lineup.

I don't need to tell you who ranks first on this list. Which reminds me, whatever happened to Glenn Gulliver?

No, no, no.. Brooks Robinson played in 2,870 games. Mora and DeCinces are tied at 793.

I think the record is safe.

Those non-waiver deadline deals in 2000 didn't pan out for the Orioles, but they did pull Mora from the Mets, and eventually re-signed shortstop Mike Bordick. That one worked out in their favor, no matter how little we saw of Mike Kinkade. And how quickly Pat Gorman disappeared from baseball's landscape.

For the Orioles:

Brian Roberts 2B
Cesar Izturis SS
Nick Markakis RF
Nolan Reimold LF
Ty Wigginton 1B
Matt Wieters DH
Justin Turner 3B
Chad Moeller C
Jeff Fiorentino CF

Jeremy Guthrie RHP

For the Yankees:

Derek Jeter SS
Johnny Damon LF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Hideki Matsui DH
Jorge Posada C
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Melky Cabrera CF

CC Sabathia LHP

And don't forget about Chris Richard, current TB Ray.

I see 8 above average hitters against 3. But the FO may look to bring up that AA guy Bell to bolster the hitting next year. Sure, next year will be better most likely. That's not really the point as it would be hard to fare worse. Is the club wiling to do what it takes to be a playoff contender financially? So far it has pays more for a team not to put in the resources to be at the elite level as the bigwigs tend to barely break even. I am not going the old "ANgelos is cheap" route. Far from it, he is making a boatload of cash and he has pulled the ultimate PR move by convincing many of you that spending lots of money is detrimental to the ballclub. Is that rational? Don't you think an ace and a middle of the order bat are worth a 2nd and 3rd rounder? Not a good FA year for sure, but proven major leaguers in their prime have to be more valuable than the 40th and 80th picks in the draft.

I guess I would say that I have been on board with steps 1 and 2 of MacPhail's plan and I would disagree with the pacing of the final phase and where to place the resources. Now that would change if he shocks the world and makes an aggressive move or two in the offseason, but I see a minor trade (Erbe or Hernandez) for the type player (not him but a guy who usually hits 20 HR and 80 RBI)-- in other words Huff with better defense. To me that would be a relative failure taken in context of this organization's recent positive steps. We'll see.

Btw, my ROY question did not in any way suggest that the O's should factor that into whether Matusz should be shut down. I'm just curious how many innings he has left.

Roch,

One of the posts from an earlier thread (I think it was "Ray") asked a very intriguing question.......getting Jeter's take on Matusz. I just thought it might be fun to get a handful of players opinions on Matusz. Would love to hear what they have to say.

A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY and hope you had a great one......now on to my question. What did you have for dinner?

Thanks. I actually sort of grazed all day and night. Nothing special. Had great meal at Del Friscos steakhouse the night before. My wallet is still crying, but was excellent. - Roch

Those were very costly trades by Thift, as it was a quick way to improve the roster but accomplished very little. I think they brought it 10-11 players and not one pitcher made it. Horrible talent evaluation by DeMarco when making the trades. Of course, Angelos' loyalty to Thift didn't help any either; by not replacing his "yes man" sooner. So, between that and their (DeMarco's?) draft record, it helps explain the 12 year drought that appears to be coming to an end soon.

Mora was scratched, I guess that cats shouldn't be aloud in the club house

Never did understand why Aaron Ledesma ('97 season), another Met draftee, couldn't hang around longer. Good BA, but was his fielding (mostly middle IF) that bad? As bad as Salazar's or Kinkade's?

Hmmm, watch a poorly run franchise where winning is not a priotiy, or watch a team that strives to win a championship every year.

Sorry O's.

GO RAVENS! MAKE THE CHIEFS FEEL PAIN!

and justin is thrown into the fire, let's go dude. Way to beat out that d* as i type.

Nice Fio!!! I don't know if guts shoulda let that go foul or not, good play for the out at least.

I would love to see Jeff succeed with us after all of these years.

Turner has a spot on next years roster. No doubt. I've seen the kid a lot, he's a gamer in the Reimold mold. LOL RAMON trade. Hmmmm, another good job.

bms said:

Moeller doesn't look a day over 25. I think we need him here next year too. I really like that dude. So what about his groundout to Arod just now. He plays hard, he's got amazing baseball smarts, he's exactly what our young staff needs.

Brummie_Oriole said:

Too many sports to keep up with.

The game changed when the Chiefs brought Thigpen in. Now the Ravens are IMPLODING on the field.

I admit I can't stay away from the O's game. Fiorentina is playing smart baseball right now. I really like this guy and I'm glad he's back in the organisation.

Roch: Nadal is getting his butt handed to him by Del Porto.

Even though JT and Guts collided I LOVE the hustle. I'm not hating on Guts for a couple of runs, the Spanks friggin score. Keep it close, keep the bats up.

Really terrible play by Damon, and Jeter too, who also held the ball. I guess on Yankee blogs they'll be complaining about how Girardi should be fired because his players ignore the fundamentals.

Henn sucks. He has earned his horrible reputation. Doris the all you can eat attendant must not have been on the road trip.

What is wrong with MASN today? Where's the O's game?

8 runs, so far in the 8th, tell me again roch, why were Waters and McCrory brought up instead of miller.

I stated here yesterday that Trembley using Mark Hendrickson for three innings Friday night with a 10-4 lead against the Yankees bench would come back to hurt the team. Sure enough . . . bases loaded and two outs in the sixth and Matsui at bat, the key at bat in the game, and Hendrickson was unavailable. When the number of effective options available from the bullpen are limited you must use what you have carefully. A sweep would have been nice.

PAINFUL!

Hey roch , harbaugh had to have a big bet on the game. There is no way he is suppose to try and score at the endof the game. Take a knee and go home. If anybody thinks different then they are being very naive about point spreads and gambling.

Did anyone watch this game? It's football season.

YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT THE 2000 TRADES REMINDED ME ABOUT BJ SURHOFF'S HEART WRENCHING FAREWELL PRESS CONFERENCE. WHO DID THE O'S GET FOR HIM AND HOW DID THEY DO?

Pitcher Luis Rivera, outfielder Trinidad Hubbard and backup catcher Fernando Lunar. Not good. Not good at all. - Roch

Hey blancione,
Have you ever thought about why you insist on being so emphatic when you make absurdly uninformed comments. You should lower the temperature before you crawl into the frying pan.

In the NFL, teams do not take let up when leading by only seven points. For the love of Roch, the Ravens had to try to score again to lock it up. There was too much time left, after KC used all of their time-outs, to take a knee; you don't try a field goal because it could have been blocked, etc.

Great Caesar's Ghost! What in the world do point spreads and gambling have to do with Harbaugh's correct decision (I assume you were joking about Harbaugh having a bet on the game; you were kidding weren't you?).

You can be flagrantly obtuse at times.

I don't even pretend to be a football expert on this or any other blog, but you make me feel like the second coming of Walter Camp.

bms said:

Bob is such a hater, thank Harbaugh. Do you even know what the spread was? Keep blabbing. Pretty funny how you got called out on your bet and pretty obvious you have no intention of upholding your end of the bargain.

blancione said:

hey roch i just love how naive people are in regards to sports. They watch these games and are so gung ho for the home team that they don't have a clue about whats really going on in regards to points spreads and the gambling part of this game. . You have been around way to long not to understand what i am talking about. I would like to buy you a beer sometime so that we could have a nice chat.
