Rotation change
| | Comments (16)

Orioles manager Dave Trembley confirmed earlier today that Chris Tillman has been shut down, and Chris Waters will take his place in the rotation.

Waters will start Thursday against the Rays, with Jason Berken pushed back to Friday.

Trembley wants Tillman to get stronger, which means joining Brian Roberts and Brian Matusz this winter at the Athletes' Performance Institute in Arizona.

"I think he's going to stay with Matusz for a while out there," Trembley said.

"I don't think he's going to fully develop until he's probably 24, 25. For a kid who came to spring training as a 20 year old and pitched in the big leagues at 21, I think he made a lot of progress. I told him today, 'The approach you took at Yankee Stadium, the night that (Derek) Jeter eventually set the record for most hits, right from the first inning, right from the very first pitch of the game, that's how you need to pitch all the time. With that type of aggressiveness, that type of demeanor.' And that will come with more maturity and more experience. I think he understands that. We all think the world of him."

Also, Felix Pie isn't available tonight, and Bob McCrory has returned to Baltimore because of shoulder discomfort.

McCrory started to warm up yesterday, but informed Trembley that he couldn't pitch. He'll undergo an arthrogram tomorrow, where dye is injected into the shoulder.

"When I got (Dennis) Sarfate up and brought him in the game, McCrory hadn't pitched in six days, so McCrory got up in the eighth inning to do a little sideline touch-and-feel, and he relayed the information that his shoulder was bothering him," Trembley said.

I will be surprised if we see McCrory pitch again for the Orioles. He could be one of the first players removed from the 40-man roster.

I think Trembley understands personnel far better than he knows how to manage a game. Rather than just fire him outright, let's kick him upstairs to a new position.

Just as long as he's not in the dugout next season...

Hey Roch: Are the Orioles getting to the point where they may not have enough bodies to field a team. One thing really bothers me. A young pitcher, McCory, has an injury after tanking one opportunity after another one. With all due respect to him, you know if you are hurting. You know whether or not you should tell the pitching coach and the manager, you cannot go back out there. You have the responsibility to tell them. What gives here?

Maybe it just started bothering him yesterday. I haven't talked to him, so don't really know. - Roch

Hey Roch,

Any word yet if Wieters is going to the API with them? I think it would be good for him to work on his foot speed as he seems to struggle on the base path a little. :)

I haven't heard anything about his winter plans. Will pass along any info during the last homestand. Maybe he should go to that fast camp that Conine attended, which actually improved his speed a little. Cris Carter's camp (not that I ever considered Carter to be particularly fast, but Conine swore by it). - Roch

Pittsburgh 11 ... L A 1.....We are still in the hunt for the 2nd draft pick....A loss tonight to Tampa keeps us tied in the loss column.....Sadly this is what I have been reduced to hoping for this last week of the season......That said, the powers that be need to take a college groomed player with that high pick ....... No more high schoolers.......This team needs help now......Look how quickly Nolan & Brian have advanced, with both expected to make next yrs. team........Drafting a high school player means he will maybe help the O's in 2014.......Can we wait that long ?

Isn't McCrory the one who grabbed his arm/shoulder a few years ago on the pitcher's mound when he was getting torched as if to say "Please take me out of this game!". Funny how he complains of discomfort just when it appears the team is getting ready to make a decision on him.

Ozzie Guillen as the O's manager. Hmmm, besides his abrassive style, he would refuse to play "Yes Man" with Andrew and Ole Pete, plus he would probably command a multi-million dollar contract.

As always: If it is bad for the Profit/Loss, it's bad for the Orioles.

There is my MACFAIL post for this blog topic.

I blink, and Hendrickson has already given up 2 runs in the first. What a surprise. PAINFUL!

Wow, just looked at the standings. The O's WILL finish in last place......again. Progress? LOL.

Plans don't always work out. The Donner Party had a "plan" and it ended pretty badly for them.

Schoolman,
Nick Markakis obviously is very slim; his loosely-fitting uniform makes him look slight of stature. The absence of a power-stroke may be due, in part, to Nick's lack of strength.

Are you in a position to comment based on your weight-training experience and your observation of Nick's physique in the clubhouse; do you think that Nick would benefit from adding bulk for more power and for greater durability when he begins to wear down in August and September.

I have heard that Brian Roberts is maxed-out physically; short, but not small in the sense that NFL running backs have become knock-offs of Emmitt Smith.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You have to be careful with the weights. Remember what bulking up did to Ruben Sierra's career. He became a muscle man, lost his flexibility and never was the same hitter. Nick can maybe add some strength, but he doesn't necessarily need to pack on the muscle. That's only good for bloggers. - Roch

Bases loaded and we end up with no runs. REALLY?

JackDunn: Sorry, Jack and me. I had a few things on my plate, all at the same time. You are quickly overtaking Roscoe as by favourite pro-MACFAIL poster on here. I love your sarcasm, sense of humour and descriptions of "vampire trolls" and "The Troll Wars".

Thank you for the laughs, even if we disagree 99 per cent of the time.

Roch,

With all the injuries, maybe the O's should pluck Chris Carter away from the Red Sox and give him a week in the bigs and a chance in spring training!

So, Brummie...you understand pain, yet you continue to post for the rest of us...hmmm.

Roch,

As I understand it our class assignment is to simply ignore the "natering nabombs of negativisms" and read the post we are interested in.

Ok, I'm doing that. Where's my star for the day?

Roch,

I have two questions and would appreciate your opinions.

(1) Have you ever wondered why the team does not hold a mini camp during the last three weeks of September for it's most promising minor league players. We keep hearing that they run out of gas in early September, so why don't we pay them top go to the spring training facility and work with the minor league traing staff on strength and conditioning drills? We don't have to place any more innings on their arms and pitching is as much legs as arms. Just ask Nolan Ryan.,

(2) I'm not asking you to grade DT but do you agree that the best way to evaluate a manager is whether he's getting the most from the players on his team?

I don't pretend to speak for others but I find it very difficult to believe that some of your readers are going to leave you because they're disgusted by the behavior of SOME of your posters. I would like to think that their frustration is the fact that we're ending another season in a way that embarrasses those of that love this team. Besides, where else are they going to find insightful, witty info about the Baltimore Orioles?

Keep up the good work, and THANKS.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some guys may work out at the minor league camp. Really not sure. But I think after a long season, they look to rest some guys before sending a few to the AFL and others to play winter ball. Getting the most from your players is high on the list of ways to grade a manager. Unfortunately, in some cases, the "most" isn't going to be good enough. - Roch

If it's so good for a player as far as maximizing their strength and endurance, why don't we make the whole team go? How else are we supposed to play on the same level as the Yanks and Sox?
