So who replaces Matusz in the rotation?
Left-hander Mark Hendrickson will take Brian Matusz's spot in the rotation. He began the 2009 season as a starter before Rich Hill came off the disabled list.
Hendrickson has been much better in the bullpen throughout his career, but manager Dave Trembley pointed out that the club doesn't have a lot of options. Brian Bass, Chris Waters and Chris Lambert were other possibilities.
Trembley anticipates using multiple relievers to assist Hendrickson in those starts. Hendrickson won't be expected to throw 90 pitches right away.
Also, Chris Tillman will make "a few more starts," according to Trembley, before the rookie is shut down.
Felix Pie will attempt to hit and throw later today, and the Orioles are hopeful that he'll return to the lineup tomorrow night.
Trembley indicated that the Orioles wouldn't bring up another outfielder as long as Pie is listed as day-to-day. If Pie's back spasms were deemed serious enough to keep him out for another week, the club would be forced to make a roster move - most likely adding Lou Montanez. But that isn't a consideration at the moment.

What about Rodrigo Lopez or Sidney Ponson?
Bums !
Trembley ALWAYS anticipates using multiple relievers, and that's a good thing. It doesn't matter if Hendrickson starts or anyone else. Who figures to go beyond six innings right now?
Man, they really don't seem to like Montanez very much....
Hendrickson,a starter again? That worked so well before.... the guy had found his role, sometimes I wonder about that FO.
Roch this move makes no sense. If Lambert is here, he should be starting if he's that important for a 40 man roster spot. Otherwise, we might as well go get Rodrigo Lopez who was cut from the Phillies. At least he's stretched out to be a starter.
Andy should at least make it look like we are trying to win games...
I like Hendrickson just fine in his bullpen role. Totally disagree with this move.
Hendrickson? That's laughable; you find a role the guy is successful in and then take him out of it. Brilliant. And another possibility, Lambert, in the one relief appearance he had, looked like he should hightail it for the nearest beer league ASAP: awful.
Why in the world would anyone want to watch this team over the next 20 games?
Matusz said that he learned more in his 8 ML starts than in all his college years. So are we shutting him down 'cause we fear we might overload his brain? Baseball has become HYSTERICAL over this overuse idea. The sport needs a trip to the psychiatrist's couch.
I guess finishing strong is not going to happen. I have had enough of Hendrickson in the rotation. I still, get upset when they call him from the bullpen. What about the pitchers AM was going to get to replace Tillman and Matusz. Lopez, wouldnot cost them much. I forgot, this is the Orioles, we are talking about. Dont they care about the season ticket holders for the remainder of the year? I guess not. Why would the front office worry about the fans now? They havent in 12 years. Look at the teams they have put on the field.
Hendrickson as a starter....do I need to say anything else?
LAUGHABLE!
These next couple of weeks of O's baseball is going to be PAINFUL to say the least.
I dont understand the logic behind this move. Why not try Arieta for a start or two? If for anything, just to give a taste of the major league level? If Matusz can make the jump from double A, why not let Arieta make two or three starts from triple A?
Waters, Bass...GIVE ME A BREAK!
