This, that and the other
As I was driving my daughter and her friend to school this morning, I passed a station wagon with the Unitas statue strapped to the hood. Should I be suspicious?

Derek Jeter's three hits last night tied him with Lou Gehrig for the most in Yankees history. He'll likely break the record over the weekend against the Orioles, unless he takes an 0-fer. And I don't see that happening.
Have you checked out some of the women that Jeter has dated? Trust me, he's the luckiest man on the face of the earth.
Just to review, I predicted that the Yankees wouldn't make the playoffs. And Grady Sizemore would be named MVP. And Roy Halladay would win the Cy Young. And Ron Washington would be the first manager fired.
If I had been alive, I probably would have taken the Germans and the points in WWII.
Tigers closer Fernando Rodney has appealed his three-game suspension for firing the ball into the press box at Tropicana Field after giving up two runs Friday night. Rodney might be the first pitcher in history to brush back a sportswriter - though Peter Schmuck has been known to crowd a few plates.
I try not to be a serial second-guesser, since it's easy to sit back after the fact and question every move made in a game, but I'm not sure why Cesar Izturis was batting last night with a runner on first base and none out in the top of the eighth inning. The bench isn't exactly short these days.
The bullpen is well-stocked, but not as much as you'd think. Manager Dave Trembley told reporters yesterday that Koji Uehara won't be available to pitch for a while because he requested at least one more side session, and he might get extra work in a simulated game. That's probably a good idea, since he hasn't pitched since June 23.
Hopefully, he won't pull a simulated hamstring.
Also, The Sun's Jeff Zrebiec reported that Kam Mickolio returned to Baltimore to have his right arm examined. Not long ago, Mickolio told me about some soreness that he experienced in his biceps area, which made him unavailable for about four days. I guess it's back.

Can we all agree that Matt Wieters leads the team, and perhaps the league, in long singles? I'm talking about the kind that slam off the fence. I've lost count.
He might become the first player to launch a ball over the Green Monster and be credited with a double.
Wieters looks so much better behind the plate, and some credit must go to roving catching instructor Don Werner.
The Single-A Frederick Keys led the Carolina League in attendance for the first time since 1994, attracting 293,438 fans to Harry Grove Stadium. That figure also led all advanced Single-A franchises.
And finally, the Double-A Bowie Baysox will host the 15th Central Maryland Career Fair at Prince George's Stadium on Sept 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free, and applicants are encouraged to wear business attire. Leave the torn jeans at home.

Roch...I'm really not feeling too good about the progress of the team. I am excited about prospects such as Tillman and Matusz, and I do think they are major league ready, or just about major league ready. However, I don't understand why people keep thinking the Orioles will be ready to compete in 2010 or 2011 because the team gets worse year after year. Having said that though, I think they do have a lot of talent and I think this offseason is the year we should go out and get the big bat and #1 or #2 experienced pitcher. Why wait until we're ready to compete when we won't be ready to compete until we fill those two needs?

I was wondering a similar thing when they didn't pinch run for Wieters with 2 on in the top of the 9th. Let's face it, the guy runs like he has cinder blocks around his ankles.
So many times I read your blogs and think of a funny response, but, like so many other times, I wave my white flag and bow to the terrific wit and humor that you provide all us students. This entry is priceless!!
So, I'll go back to my office work, raising my hand for the follwing:
1. What are the odds of Matt Wieters one day getting an inside-the-park home run as did his similarly speed-challenged predecessor, Gus Triandos?
2. Is the Trembley-to-the-mound-parade part of Richie Bancells plan to help him get fit? Can Matt Albers legally accompany him on each trip?
Trembley was too distracted trying to look up situational stats for his pitchers to even care what was going on with his hitters. Trembley needs to stop micromanaging the pitching staff. Just let the guys do their job, or trembley will be wishing he had one.
Sweet 17....ole the days.
Ok let me get back to reality.
The O's Magic Number now stands at SEVENTEEN
17 more games until the O's reach a plateau reached only by the worst mismanaged and defunct front offices. Well Andrew....YOUR plan is not working and you are now close to joining this elite group i.e. KC, Pittsburg.
Bringing in over the hill "wanna be" type players sunk this team from the start of the season. Mr. LIGHTNING....it isnt working. We will be in the same place next year when you bring in more "budget concious" players to revamp the bullpen or "shore up" the corners. You can call them stop gaps to the kool aid drinkers on here and get away with it. But you cant urinate on my back and tell me it is raining. Your off season decision are made soley for one purpose. To put the most fans in the seats at the cheapest cost to the bottom line......Ole Pete's wallet.
Oh by the way.....keep protecting DT, he is horrible at handling a pitching staff.....but I understand why you do it. He preaches your gospel day in and day out. Your love to surround yourself with yes men is unequaled!
If Frederick keeps it up, they might surpass the Orioles....LOL
Weiters looks much more comfortable behind the plate and in the box. Its a big adjustment. Plus playing on a team which to be frank, STINKS cant help matters.
Can you see Hernandez blocking the plate like Weiters. I was glad to see that Pre-Madonna gone along with Tejada. I count the days until we can rid ourselves of "Mr. Respect" Mora. I have to laugh watching him at the plate. The umpire calls a strike, Mora walks out of the box and stares at the ump as if to say.........I demand respect when I am in the box......you call what I think is a strike....LOL
"If I had been alive, I probably would have taken the Germans and the points in WWII."
poor joke IMO.
Roch,
I watched and listened to DT talking about Koji before last night's game and it was VERY clear that he was biting hard on his tongue and choosing his words carefully about Koji not being ready to throw.
He used phrases like "this is what I was told by him", "well, he's on the 40-man roster but he can't pitch", and "this is the information that I received on the situation". Not exact quotes --- I wasn't taking notes --- but what I read between the lines was that he is NOT happy with Koji at all.
Do you have any more on this?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not there, but the Orioles have been relying most of the year on what Koji's trainer tells the club. It's an unusual situation. Trembley might be tired of answering Koji questions. And he might be frustrated that Koji finally rejoins the club, but still isn't ready to pitch. - Roch
Roch-
I must have missed something. When did Joey Gathright go to the Red Sox? And did the O's get anything in return? I thought he was being considered as one of the O's September callups.
Thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He was traded for PTBNL or cash. Club did him a favor. Gave him a chance to play in the majors on a contender. And Fiorentino earned a call-up. - Roch
We're in the AL East, so we need to be competitive against the Yankees and Red Sox. But in the glass is half full vein, we're 51-58 against the rest of baseball. The best two teams in baseball trounce the living crap out of us, but otherwise we've held our own despite the young pitching staff and the collapse of several veterans (Huff, Mora, and Wigginton's horrid performance against LHP).
One moment last night that stung: Varitek/Lowell looking awful on that hit and run. So what happens? Varitek looks like a chump swinging about a second after the ball crosses the plate. It was an Orioles moment. But Lowell winds up easily at second on the pitch in the dirt, then Varitek drives him in despite being behind in the count. You just know if it had been us, those ugly mistakes wouldn't have led to a run and we'd all be bemoaning it here today.
i'm sure whomever jeter is dating you wouldn't throw out of bed for eating crackers. but what about the girl who plays offense and defense that shawn merriman is involved with. seems to me like "lights out" must have hit himself in the head a couple of times. someone needs to send him a westclock alarm clock and wake him up.
Did anybody else think the shove ellsbury gave wieters was a cheap shot when he was tagged out at the plate? He was out by a mile and he seemed to slow down before the shove. It didn't look like wieters said anything to him, but he did stare him down for a second. I guess I was just hoping for a brawl, it would have made the game a little more enjoyable to watch.
I predict that John Angelos will manage the club next season.
I predict the O's will finish slightly above .500 in 2012. Someone needs to tell ownership that .500 is not contending.
After catching up on the blog from last night, ( I hate NOT having my laptop.) Yeah, I really don't understand this revolving door out of the bullpen?? Burn through our 2 most "reliable" lefties in the BP on one batter each? Allow VMart to bat from his better side?
I think Berken and Hernandez are both better suited for our BP next year, although the rate that they give up 1st inning runs before settling down (if you can call it that) is astounding. Not to worried about these guys this year, they really are geting their feet wet and it's been their longest seasons ever. Hopefully they can take what they've learned this year and build on it through spring training and carry it through the season next year.
Good job by the team facing 191 pitches yesterday though. I like to see them working the counts much more, a little patience can go a long way. Great gun by Nolan as well, loved seeing him and Wieters on those 2 plays.
Roch, be honest to you really think that this plan is working and without signing major free agents do you really feel that the orioles will ever be able to compete in this division. As it stands now they are light years away from being competive with the yankee's and boston. And finally if this time next year we are still having these same concerns will you admit that this plan and direction did not work.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the plan was to gradually introduce these kids to the majors and get their feet wet with an eye toward 2010 and beyond, and to improve the depth and level of talent in the farm system, then it's working. Check out the roster. But we won't truly know the results until we get a full season out of them, and see how much the team improves from here. They need a big bat for the lineup. They could use a veteran, proven winner for the front end of the rotation. They need to spend some $$ or be willing to part with some young pitching, which is one reason you stockpile it. - Roch
Roch,
All I can say is your on fire today, between the WW II and the Schmuck joke, all I can say is that I'm staying out of your way :)Great job this year, can't wait to follow everything in the off season (though most of my attention will probably be on the Ravens and Terps). BTW don't know if you play tennis in the winter but there are some pretty decent indoor courts in Finksburg Carroll County (Carroll Raquet Club) that I used to play on. Think they also do a pretty informal Winter League (once a night doubles and mixed). Figured you might get bored or something lol.
As a former Frederick resident I can honestly say that going to Keys games is a great experience. Especially if anybody remembers where the Keys used to play before Harry Grove stadium. I'm guessing there are better little league parks outside Cherynobyl then what the Keys used to pass off as a field.
Now they must be playing in one of the best parks in Minor League baseball. And with the O's improved drafting it's going to continue to be a great place to watch baseball.
This(Mora), That(Scott), and the Other (Trembley and Wigginton)
Roch - do you defend the keeping of any these four? - I know you like some of these guys but I ask you to be brutally honest!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It has nothing to do with "liking" anybody. Mora will be gone. It's time. Scott is streaky, but this second half is like nothing he's experienced before. Wigginton might be needed at first or third next season until Bell/Snyder/whomever is ready. Depends what they do over the winter. And whether either player could be packaged in a deal that will improve this club. No way to predict that right now. I've already expressed my opinion on Trembley over and over. - Roch
Roch,
Don't get me wrong here....I love Matt Wieters and I think he's going to be a great player. However, he seems to have a hustling problem in my opinion. Do you get that feeling too? Like on the line drive in the 9th yesterday. He smashed the ball, but thought it would get caught, so he kinda walked out of the box. Then he saw the ball hit the ground, he started what he calls 'running' and then finished by jogging the last 20 feet. Or on ground balls, that even he might make a close play, he just sort of jogs to first. Is he really THAT slow, and it just appears that he's not running? Is he just not a hustler? Or does it have something to do with his being a catcher? Is he trying to save his knees or something? I would love some input...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He's that slow. I wouldn't judge his overall hustle on that one play. - Roch
Second guess. The anouncers had just explianed that Bay was 2 for 13 lifetime against Hendrickson. I thought that's a good match up. But then in walks Trembly with a better idea. Righty vs Righty would be better. So Bay is now 2 for 3 vs Baez, and Rameriz is 4 for 5. Match ups are not always by right vs right or left vs. left. Earl would have had a little card telling him Hendrickson was the right pitcher to have in there. In the day of computers where anyone can get that information, why do you suppose Trembly doesn't see it. PS, it is not a generational thing, I'm older than Dave and can recognize it. I still like Dave, but he sure is easy to second guess.
Wieters looks so much better behind the plate, and some credit must go to roving catching instructor Don Werner.
no question about it. when he first came up he didn't even give the pitcher a target and his throwing to 2nd on steals is 100% better than when he started. as for his base running speed. guess he's the new "gus".
Jack said: Well Andrew....YOUR plan is not working and you are now close to joining this elite group i.e. KC, Pittsburg.
you have no clue. anyone with a little bit of common sense and little bit of knowledge about baseball knows the w-l record didn't matter this year. look at the outfield they have. look at the double play combination. look at the catcher. look at the young arms in the rotation. they are putting together a very good young talented foundation for next year and the future. by the middle of next year josh bell will be at 3rd. they have several good young arms still in the minors. you can't take 25 yrs of horrible management and change it in 2-3 yrs but what andy has done to rebuild this organization is terrific.
I agree with the progress of this team. What progress? AM keeps signing these "nobody else wants players." We have a team with prospects and dead beats. With a few pretty good players sprinkled in. This is suppose to be progress. We still cant compete in the AL east with what we have. What free agent would want to come here? Do we really have enough to trade for a Gonzales or even a Fielder? Without hurting us in the long run? I am not sold on AM now or before. Other than stockpiling players in our minor league system. What about the big league club, now? I am really concerned about 2010 and beyond. I really dont think this organization can afford to keep losing year after year. The Ravens are the only team that gets our fans excited. Media, especially. That tells me a lot. Angelos wake up and put a winner on the field. Bring back the Orioles Magic and the fans.
Jack,
I must apologize for my incompetance these last two and half seasons. I don't know what I was thinking, but thanks to you, I now see the error of my ways.
You're right - all I've been worried about is putting money in Ole' Pete's pocket, and I've run this team right into the ground in the process.
I should never have brought Eaton, Hendrickson, Pie and Simon, among others, onto this team. It was obvious that they were clearly useless players back in spring training. Looking back, I should have ponyed up the cash for Pedro, Lowe, Burnett, Sabathia, and Wolfe. What a rotation that would have been! Plus, if I hadn't been so cheap, I could have gotten Texieria. If only I had offered him $300M, I just know he wouldn't have turned us down.
With those players, we surely would have won the World Series this year. Stupid me!
However, all is not lost. Since I've been reading Roch's blog and your well thought out, insightful posts, I come to realize that my plan just isn't going to work. Your ideas are so much better than mine (or any other MLB GM), it's obvious that with your superior intellect and wealth of baseball knowledge, YOU are the one that should really be in charge of this organization. So, I'd like to extend to you an offer to become assistant GM of the Baltimore Orioles. I just know that with you helping to guide the ship, we will make all the right off-season moves, and win the series next year.
What say you Jack? Won't you please guide my sleigh? I'm very much looking forward to your answer.
Sincerely,
Andy MacPhail
P.S. - I would also like to say I'm sorry for not communicating directly to you over the course of my tenure. Maybe you could send me your phone number so I can call you?
P.S.S - You're an idiot.
at least roberts has almost as many doubles as the team has wins. haha.
Rim shot on Peter Schmuck. Thanks folks, Roch will be here all week... try the veal!
Well served sir.
Wieters not only looks better behind the plate, but also in front of it. For the first time, all season, I felt like he was swinging the bat with authority. It won't surprise me if he has some good at-bats the next three weeks of the season.
I'd like to know what Mr. Trembley's philosophy is on pintch-hitting. He has let Izturis, and even Andino hit in similar situations.
Yeah Roch, I just had a similar experience, while coming back from the 711. I just saw a a statue of Gorbechev, strapped to the hood of a 1974 AMC Hornet with spinnng wheels.
Although the Orioles lost last night, I think this team made great progress among the young players. Today, I notice many great observations from the bloggers. Kudos to Weiters, Berken, Pie, and Reimolds.
Roch: How many of the young players will play in the Carribbean islands this Fall and Winter? I know several players are destined for the AFL.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't have a list yet. Only know Montanez will play in P.R. - Roch
Jack,
What is a Pre-Madonna? That means "Before Mary." I believe that you meant to say "prima donna."
In this case, your post actually was funny, just not for the reason that you thought.
Jeter sure is a lucky man and he knows it.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=jeter/women
As I was driving my daughter and her friend to school this morning, I passed a station wagon with the Unitas statue strapped to the hood. Should I be suspicious?
IF they got it all the way to Carroll Co. ...yes. They will run into Stiller fans any moment.
First of all, Gehrig, by all accounts, was a prince of a guy, a married man. He & Jeter couldn't be more different as individuals. I kind of wish Gehrig still had that record.
Also, don't envy Jeter's swordmanship too much Roch, rumor has it that he has the gift that keeps on giving. He has paid a price there...
Roch, thanks for an amazing year of updates and great sense of humor! Following the team as closely as you do, in your opinion does Trembley deserve to be back next year as Manager or should he be fired? Don't take into consideration who would replace him, as there are always Managerial candidates available. It's simply a matter of opinion...does he deserve to be fired or should he return as Manager? Thanks!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I won't say he "deserves" to be fired. I don't agree with every decision he's made, including bullpen moves and lineups, but how many games was he going to win this year with this team? Everyone picked the Orioles to finish last. They're last. - Roch
Tying the record is a pretty big deal, actually, and worthy of celebration.
Kevin: I thought the same thing when I saw Wieters tag Ellsbury. Of course, if the situation were reversed, I’m sure there would’ve been some words or confrontation from the Red Sox. No way would that have stood without some incident. Remember awhile back when Jason Varitek took exception to what he felt was a hard tag by Danys Baez. Varitek’s a catcher and he thinks a tag is too hard? For a team that wins, they sure are a bunch of crybabies.
" We have to be more competitive in our division if we going to succeed."
I guess you were WRONG AGAIN Andrew!
Dandy Andy can make all the Henn and Lambert signings he wants. But until he gets serious and starts pursuing genuine MLB talent, we will continue to be a quick "tune up" for the Sox or Yankees.
I hope you and Ole Pete are enjoying that $35m in revenue you brought in over the last two years.

So you are an Obama anti capitalist? Isnt the reason most people go into any business to make money? When did this become a sin in America of all places?? Isnt this the place everyone in the world wants to come in order to be free to succeed? YOU choose to root for this business entity which is the personal property of Angelos. Fine, but dont expect him to run it as a non profit just for you. Do you consult Angelos about which car to buy or what color to paint your house? I drive a Chrysler. That doesnt entitle me to dictate what color the factory floor is painted. Or whether they use slot or phillips head screws to attach the fender. Move to Cuba where everything is run for the public good. They have good baseball teams there and I am sure none of them are run to make a profit.

You have been corrected on this before, so obviously you just REFUSE to learn. Pre Madonna was Cher. Prima donna comes from the italian for "first lady". It is laughable how you attack the competence of others by demonstrating . . . no, PROVING your own incompetence!
Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't Weiters start off slow when he moved up a level earlier this year? He had a lot of long singles and then gradually started hitting doubles and home runs. He's going to come around. There are very few all-star caliber talents that start off that way from day one--especially ones that have less than two years of professional experience.
Sorry, forgot the word ARE.

Funny how Deadspin was critical of the O's FO. Let's see, that makes SI, Forbes and Deadspin all ripping the Warehouse in the last 6 months. Hmmmm, are they all wrong? Or maybe they don't drink the MACFAIL KOOL AID, unlike the local media.

It's almost been a full season and Jack still can't spell Wieters correctly.
Oh, or "Pittsburg"
What a guy.
Steve in Phx
And it has been two full season and we are worse off under MCFAIL's plan then before.

Take away their record against the Orioles and the Blue jays, and the Red Sox are barely a .500 team. Then take away their record in interleague play, and they ARE a .500 team. They're not one of the two best teams in baseball.
Dummie Brummie said; "Dandy Andy can make all the Henn and Lambert signings he wants. But until he gets serious and starts pursuing genuine MLB talent, we will continue to be a quick "tune up" for the Sox or Yankees."
Brummie, what you are insinuating is that instead of trading for Henn and Lambert, the Orioles should have pursued a trade for a proven starter such as, say, CC Sabathia, Zach Greinke, etc. That is a marvelous idea. Oh, there is one problem. Any potential trade partners would have to be willing to do the deal. Gee, I guess MacPhail is at fault for not consummating a deal with the Yankees for Sabathia, seeing how willing Brian Cashman would be to trade Sabathia in July or August while his team was compiling the best record in MLB.
Roch - just curious. why is there always talk of shutting down the young pitchers but not the young fielders? Would it make sense to shut down Reimold to give him a rest and let him end on a high note?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You shut down young starters to protect their young arms from all those innings. Not the same with a position player, though they, too, can wear down. Reimold is expected to get a little more rest now, either on the bench or as the DH. At least, that's what we've been told. - Roch
The women Derek Jeter has been seen with surprises you? It's called MONEY. When was the last time you saw a car mechanic with someone who looks like Jeter's women, on their arms? That's why they're called trophy wives/girlfriends. It's all about MONEY and STATUS. How else do you explain the old cretins in Congress with the good looking babes? Surely you don't think they actually love these guys for their being nice guys do you? The wife/girlfriend of a mechanic who cheated on them would first kick them in the nads then walk out the door. Mrs Kobe Bryant gets a new $8 million ring and guess what? She's still with him. DUH. It's about nothing but MONEY, STATUS, and oh yeah, a MEAL TICKET.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
See dude, you should have become a blogger like me. Babes would be drippin' off you. - Roch
Another lame insult by Jack in the box and he thinks every MLB teams goal is to win 162 games a year.
I wonder if he'll ever understand what the term "rebuilding" really means.
Or if he'll ever learn how to spell one of the top prospects names on his favorite team (supposedly).
I don't drink Kool-Aid. I drink beer and water. But from what I've seen out of AM, I'm on the ship, because I'm a FAN of this team. Go try and think of another cactus joke to come up with because that last one FAILED miserably.
Nice Sheets....it's funny how we can all back our statements/comments but those two idiots have zero proof of anything they say. I've been trying to ignore the "MacFail this" or "MacFail that" comments. It sounds like something that would come out of a 15 year olds mouth.
And Brummie claims he is the Orioles #1 fan and he's like 40+ years old talking down on 18 year old kids and everyone on this site.
Just goes to show the level of immaturity they're on. Taunt an 18 year old baseball player that will make more money you'll ever make in a lifetime. Pretty ridiculous right?
It has been two full seasons under MacPhail's plan, and the organization is miles better off than it was before he got here. The records of our minor league teams alone show the amount of progress that has been made. Not to mention the several prospects who have been called up this year who will form the nucleus of this team for the foreseeable future.
Previous attempts to "rebuild" this team started at the top, by signing overpriced aging has-beens or trading for them and robbing our farm system of any talent. You can't build from the top, things tend to fall over when you do that.
catching cactus with your brain? Roch it is time you gave Jack a handicap tag so he can park up front. I almost feel badly for being so harsh with him. I thought he was merely learning challenged because despite it being explained to him repeatedly, he still cant understand the simple concepts of rebuilding, prima donnas or other simple ideas, but apparently it goes deeper than that. School of Roch needs to offer special ed.
Let me see if I understand what Brummie and Jack are saying. Because of the futility of the past twelve years, they want the O's to repeat the failures of the past by signing overpriced, mediocre free agents to fool the fans, instead of sacrificing a couple years to do a full and proper rebuild offering at least SOME chance of success in the future.
Gotta love this witty comeback by one of our resident asses:
"Go back to catching cactus with your brain!"
Great opening paragraph.
You have a daughter?

Yep. Junior in high school. She is, by far, my greatest accomplishment. - Roch
Excellent as usual. And you should give a regular gig to Lucky Horseshoe. But I think the early line had the Germans favored so they would have been giving points.
Jack, time to get back and do your blog "Tool Time". But in your case I guess it would be Tole Tmie..
Sorry I'm late but I had to comment on the attempted use of "pre-madonna."
Swing and a miss!!
Unless maybe we were talking about ARod? Some people think he was more likeable pre Madonna. I disagree. (Dennis Rodman on the other hand, now thats a different story!)
But then again the post was about Hernandez, so I am left confused.
oh well. ciao ciao.
