Updating Jones and Uehara
| | Comments (6)

Adam Jones limped through the clubhouse earlier today without a boot on his left foot, and with his crutches leaning against his chair. An MRI taken yesterday didn't reveal any fractures or significant damage.

These were positive signs - except for the size of his ankle, which almost matches his head. He's been diagnosed with a Grade 2 sprain.

"Believe it or not, his ankle looks a whole lot better than when I first saw it," manager Dave Trembley said. "It's not too pretty right now. He's out for an extended period of time. It's going to take some time for him to recover from this. It might be by the time he's 100 percent, we might be running out of time with the season. Jonesy doesn't want to say that, he doesn't want to know that. Everybody knows how he is, but that very well could be."

Jones' injury hasn't changed the Orioles' plans for outfielder Lou Montanez. They're still expected to place him on the 60-day disabled list to create room on the 40-man roster, though that decision isn't final. Montanez joined Double-A Bowie today as part of his injury rehab assignment.

Koji Uehara is likely to join the Orioles Tuesday in Boston - and not to work out. They want to activate him.

"I'm expecting that tomorrow he throws 35 pitches off the mound, then he throws 40, then he comes and is ready to go on a limited basis. Probably one inning, and then we can build him up to two after that," Trembley said.

I severely sprained my ankle on a moonbounce... (don't ask)

Being somewhat of an idiot, I didn't go to a doctor or anything like I should have. Ankle was about the size of a softball for over a month, no joke. It took about 8 weeks before I didn't get any pain when walking.

Hopefully he recovers faster what with the professional trainers and rehab and such!

With a healthy person getting high quality treatments, a grade 2 sprain will require 2.5 to 3 weeks to recover from. He'll be able to start running in about a week, but not around the base paths, and probably just some light stuff. The hard part is knowing when you can start putting more pressure on it, cause if it's too early, he could make it a lot worse. I've had lots of experience with bad ankles due to running cross country in high school...I would sprain at least one per year, and dislocated my ankle once...that wasn't pretty, but it healed faster because tendons didn't tear. I feel like he should still have the boot on. No sense in risking hitting it off of something on accident.

the intelligent thing for the orioles to do is work koji in as a closer for at least the last couple weeks of the season. this was his job the last couple of years in japan before coming to the states. which to me shows the orioles were nuts bringing him in as a starter. one of the few bad choices i think macphail has made since joining the orioles. johnson has not shown in his brief tenure as closer to be a shutdown pitcher so give koji a chance. it's not like the world will come to an end if he is unsuccessful.

I have to disagree. I checked, and the world actually would come to an end. One hanging slider and we're toast. Now you must ask yourself: Is it worth it? OK, nevermind. I'm just bored. - Roch

Roch, would you mind clarifying on the Orioles' plans for Montanez? Are they planning on moving Jones to the 60 day to free up the spot for Montanez, or are they moving Montanez to the 60 day?

Also, why are the Orioles waiting to place Jones on the DL?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They're thinking about putting Montanez on the 60-day to create room on the 40-man for non-roster players who will join them in Boston next week. Jones doesn't have to go on the DL because the 25-man roster expanded - unless they want to make more room on the 40-man. - Roch

I think you're onto something there Roch. In the 2012 movie that's coming out they could show A-Rod hitting a homer off of Uehara in the bottom of the 9th and then the planet basically explodes.

i'm sorry roch. hate to have the team act on my suggestion and cause the world to end...though it might be for the best in regards to the o's season which could help improve your boredom. thanks for the laugh. the only reason i watch the games now is to see how the rookies are doing.
