Updating the Orioles and Chapman (with game update)
| | Comments (22)

So can anyone identify the road kill on the sides of Brian Tallet's face?

Maybe we could hold a contest.

I'm thinking possum.

The Orioles were leading, 2-0, heading to the bottom of the third inning. I grabbed the remote and changed the station for a few seconds, came back to MASN and the score was tied.

Back-to-back homers by Aaron Hill and Edwin Encarnacion wiped out the Orioles' lead, but Matt Wieters doubled again in the sixth to score Felix Pie and move them ahead, 3-2.

Mark Hendrickson has made it through five innings on 58 pitches (38 for strikes). He's retired eight in a row. All four hits that he's allowed have been for extra bases, including doubles by Jose Bautista and Randy Ruiz.

Update: Brian Roberts tied Lance Berkman's single-season record for doubles by a switch-hitter with his 55th, which scored Michael Aubrey in the seventh and increased the Orioles' lead to 5-2.

Going back to the international market - and with my luck, I'll get the cart with the wobbly wheel - the Orioles have scouted Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman, who soon could become a free agent after establishing residency last week in Andorra. They're being touted on mlbtraderumors.com as one of the teams that's shown particular interest.

"That's probably because we have a greater presence now than we've had in the past," said Andy MacPhail, president of baseball operations. "We've seen him pitch more than once. Where that's going to go is anybody's guess at this point. But you would have to have interest. How many left-handers are getting it up there at 97 mph?"

Some reports have Chapman reaching 102, though one scouting director reportedly views him as a middle reliever. Others say he can be a dominant starter in time, but he's not polished enough.

The Yankees, Red Sox and Mets are expected to open their wallets for him. MacPhail said he hasn't discussed Chapman with majority owner Peter Angelos, who has stated his opposition in the past to signing players who defected from Cuba.

"I have no idea where this will go. I truly don't," MacPhail said. "I have not talked to him about it because I have no idea where this one is. I haven't broached the subject with him because I am so uncertain as to the level of interest among other clubs because there will be a certain time where you measure the risk-reward.

"If some of the big boys are going to go after him, like the Red Sox did with Dice-K, that's not a risk that I would be willing to take. If it gets up to a certain level, 29 of us will bow out and there will be a winner left. I just think there's a lot of uncertainly with this. And you've already read a lot about how many different ways he's evaluated, and that's obviously going to have an impact on what the final numbers are going to be, for how long and for how much."

So ANDREW does have to run things by OLE PETE. Hmmm, we were always told in interviews that Andrew had the final say on everything. I guess he was blowing smoke....again!

Can you say YES MAN?

UNBELIEVABLE!

Whoever said that the owner isn't consulted? EVERY owner is consulted, especially when it comes to a player who's defected. - Roch

Wow. Montanez is really killing it. LOL.

But he should get more playing time because he's Jack's Golden Boy.

And Hendrickson with the quality start through 6. PAINFUL!

Brady said:

Roch, Do you think the Orioles will have any interest in signing Chone Figgins this offseason even though Josh Bell is coming up at some point
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think they'll sign anyone who blocks Bell, and Figgins isn't taking a one-year deal. - Roch

I have to laugh when I read this posting.

Other words, if we have to spend a lot of money, and may have to compete with NY or Boston, then he is out of our league. Back to spending the buck. I personally wouldnt spend it on this dude, but each time a player comes available, there is always an excuse.

GET USE TO IT, YOU ARE GETTING A TASTE TO WHAT THE OFF SEASON WILL BE LIKE!

We tried....BUT

THERE IS ALWAYS A BUT with ANDREW

Hey Roch, Aubrey's shown a decent BA but a lack of power for a corner infielder--think he has a future with the O's?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He could be tossed into the mix in spring training, with Snyder, Hughes and anyone else who's signed/acquired. - Roch

B_O = pwnt.

anyway, i do agree with stinky, i like Aubrey. Good pick up by our GM one might say.

LOL to whoever wrote about Roberts going in feet first as opposed to headfirst (which i DO endorse btw) he did it that time.

I'm not as personally interested in Chapman as Sano. I'd rather have Sano. I know you can never have too much pitching...yadda...yadda...yadda, but need some middle infield prospects. It seems vast more scouting has been done on Sano. Chapman could be 87 years old for all we know.

RichD said:

Wow,Hendrickson, 6 innings and only 2 runs...yes that is painful, for Toronto.

Brummie,
London in 2004?? I thought you went to London just recently because someone was taking materity leave and you had to take over, that is what you said. Caught in your own lie!
I agree with Mr. MacPhail, if it means millions for an unproven player we haven't seen play other than the WBC, I can recall 2 Japanese pitchers the Yankees have signed for millions and they were bust. To spend 8 or 10 million for unproven pitchers that will not start in the Majors, its just throwing money away. No need in that.

Roch, Mark only threw 68 pitches through six innings and he's done. Wha? R u kiddin me?
Why Roch? Why oh why oh why?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is only his second start since returning to the rotation. He might not be stretched out enough to go any further. - Roch

Also, pretty good relay by Pie. Let's not forget.

Albers and Ray will be back next year. Ray is just one year removed from surgery and Albers has been easy on his arm because of his injury. You have to keep pitchers that throw in the mid 90's and work on a better slider, curve or change up to go with that heat. I believe they will be much better next year. McCrory is another, if he had a change up to go with that 96-97 mile fastball, he would be much better. If he would get the calls others get, he would be better too.

Common Sense said:

How many time will Jack and B_O post trash on this board?

My prediction: PAINFUL

Bill In Elkton said:

I can understand your answer about taking Mark out. I get it, I don't want to get it, but I do. He might have completed the game under 100 pitches. That would be cool.
I looked up Bryce Harper on youtube and Googled him. That's crazy that he's as good as he is right now. Didn't Brooks Robinson play right out of high school or get the kind of attention that Harper is getting now?

Things were all happy until Baez pegged Hill and served one up to Encarnacion. I'm ready for the Baez Orioles years to be over. Nice job from Hendrickson tonight. BO, you should acknowledge that despite your continued dislike for the guy. He's done a decent job in a variety of roles since moving to the bullpen mid-year. I vote he returns for the bullpen next year. As should Koji. Mickolio shows promise. I'd bring him back also. Everyone else in the bullpen I could take or leave. Albers always makes me nervous. Ray's best days seem behind him, but maybe it's just injury recovery time for him still. Johnson, hopefully gets his game back next year. Closer role wide open next season.

Does anyone really believe Johnson is closer material??? Baez??? Free agency can't come soon enough and the over managing manager... Giving Dave Trembley an expanded roster just means more bonehead moves... The season can't end fast enough... Hendrickson pitched a great game and it's given away by these guys again... It's horrible to see and the leash better be short for any of them that start the season here next spring... I can't stand it any longer.

RichD said:

I know when the Orioles didn't score in the top of the 9th, Johnson would blow the save. I said it before the inning started. For someone that throws 96 miles an hour, he gets hit alot. I say put him back in AAA next year and make him a starter again.

When it comes to the O's post-Sherrill bullpen, it might do well to remember Col. Kurtz's posthumous wish in "Apocalypse Now":

Congratulations to Brian Roberts on tying Berkman's doubles record. Robby should be able to break it soon. Good for him!

Gordon Ramsey was seen in the O's bullpen tonight screaming "Shut it down!!" and "P*ss off!!"

Brummie- no one credible said that and you know it. You flat out lie as usual.

Jack- that is not what he said. He used the term I have tried to explain to you repeatedly but you cant still cannot grasp - risk/reward. Please do not try to explain concepts that are over your head, like 3rd grade math or second grade english. The one thing you got right is that there IS always a butt with Andrew, usually two of you in fact.

Brummie, you're skewing the mean-IQ of the School of Roch in the wrong direction. Please find somewhere else to troll. You're not welcome around here.
