One-on-One with Adam Dunn
I had a chance to talk with Nationals first basemen Adam Dunn recently on a wide range of Nats subjects, including the performance of young players in the organization, Justin Maxwell and Ian Desmond.
Check out the Q&A below to also read about Dunn's pursuit of 40 HRs, thoughts on his Texas Longhorns and the Nats' slugger's take on the Fall Classic. Enjoy!
How about the way the Nats finished the season?
Yeah, I mean, finishing with 7 wins in a row shows what we are capable of doing. The last 7 games we played really well against some good teams.
What was your thoughts after not reaching 40 HRs in 2009?
Obviously, I didn't get to 40. It shows how hard it is to do each and every day. That's a lot of home runs. Its one of the hardest things to do in sports. I am not going to look back on it and think it wasn't a good year because I didn't hit 40 home runs, I promise you.
What did you think of Jim Riggleman's job as manager?
Jim stepped up the fundamentals and we worked hard at that. I think the way we were playing early in the season it was something we definitely needed to work on. He implemented that way of playing.
Are you good with continuing at 1B?
I am fine with it. It is kind of what I expected to have happen. That's perfectly fine with me. I will definitely get better at it.
I know you love Texas Longhorn football, did you get to the Oklahoma game?
Yes I did. Early in the season they were killing me because they weren't playing very well. Last 2 games they have played really well. The next game will be very tough. Hopefully they don't slip up. They have to go to Stillwater to play Okla. State. I would imagine it will be a very interesting and high scoring game.
How about the Nats players in the AFL and the Caribbean leagues so far?
That's what it really exciting about this team is that we have so many young guys that you don't know what to expect from them. You know a guy like Ian Desmond, who seemingly comes out of no where and came up and opened a lot of eyes and played really well. A lot of the guys down there people have never heard of but those players have an unbelievable amount of talent.
How about Justin Maxwell in 2009 and his future with the club?
He is one of those guys when he figures it out he is going to be a monster. He can hit to all fields with power. Tremendous defensive player and is just a young kid they have to be patient with. They are doing the right thing. He's going to be a good one for a long time.
You saw something in the Nats last year when you were a free agent, do you think this destination will be attractive to other free agents this off season?
I definitely think so. Especially for pitchers, Nats Park is a great ballpark to pitch in, a
great division to pitch in. That's what they wanted to do in Cincinnati was to build up the pitching but guys didn't want to pitch in the Great American ball park. That's not the problem we have. We have a really fair ballpark and we have a really good offense. That should be really intriguing to a lot of free agent pitchers.
Phillies and Yankees in World Series, what is your take?
These are the two teams I really expected to be in it. It could be a high scoring World Series. They both have really good starting pitching. Obviously, if you get to the 8th or 9th with the Yankees, Mariano Rivera can shut them down but you get to the 8th or 9th innings with the Phillies and anything can happen. Its going to be interesting and a lot of fun to watch.
