MASNsports.com Exclusive One-on-One with baseball phenom Bryce Harper
Sports Illustrated has called him the "Chosen One" of baseball. He is Bryce Harper, possibly the latest 'next great baseball sensation.'
Harper could also be the number one overall selection in the June 2010 First-Year Player Draft, which the Nationals own.
In the Sports Illustrated article, they measured one of his home runs as traveling 570 feet, and he hit a 502-foot home run off the wall at Tropicana Field. He is a lefty hitting catcher by trade, but also has played center field and shortstop for his new home, the College of Southern Nevada.
Last week he performed well: 4-5, 2 doubles, a triple and a homer. In another series, he was 5-8 with 5 walks, 1 double and 1 homer. In 2008, Harper batted .590 with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs in 38 games for Las Vegas High School.
I caught up with the now 17-year-old phenom (Happy Birthday!), to get his take on playing for the USA in the U18 Pan American Championships in Venezuela and the possibility of being selected by the Washington Nationals next June, in addition to his thoughts on getting to play alongside his older brother, Bryan, and his future in baseball after junior college.
