Three more roster moves (updated)
| | Comments (20)

The Orioles have outrighted pitchers Rich Hill, Bob McCrory and Alfredo Simon to Triple-A Norfolk, removing them from the 40-man roster.

All three pitchers cleared waivers. Hill and Simon were reinstated from the 60-day disabled list. McCrory recently underwent surgery on his right shoulder.

Hill, 29, was 3-3 with a 7.80 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) after being acquired from the Chicago Cubs. He endured two stints on the disabled list - March 29 to May 16 with a strained left elbow and July 29 through the end of the season with left shoulder inflammation. Hill had surgery on Aug. 7 to repair a torn labrum.

It's possible that Hill could refuse the assignment and elect to become a free agent.

Simon, 28, was 0-1 with a 9.95 ERA in two starts covering 6 1/3 innings before undergoing ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow on May 5.

McCrory, 27, registered a 17.18 ERA in 7 1/3 innings over two stints with the Orioles. He was shut down on Sept. 21 because of a torn labrum.

NOTE: Double-A Bowie's haunted house at Prince George's County Stadium remains open tonight and tomorrow, no matter the weather. Gates open at 6 p.m. and tours run from sundown to 11 p.m.

Yes, I worked in a Halloween reference after noting the performances of the three pitchers listed above. Purely coincidental.

Nice job so far clearing quite a bit of space on the 40 man.

These all make sense. My guess is they won't get another sniff of Camden Yards since the Blue Jays didn't claim them off waivers. :-) Good luck to them though. Hopefully one or more will prove me wrong.

Hey, this really cleans up the roster. I know no one is expecting anything from Rich Hill and he isn't tying up a roster spot. I doubt that he ever gets it together, but if he is willing to start the season at Norfolk, he does provide organizational depth and who knows, maybe long relief or spot starter down the road.

Roch - Hoping you can answer this question. These players have been outrighted, but are still under contract, correct? Therefore unless they have an exit clause in their contract or "refuse assignment" they are still Orioles "property"?

I believe Hill and Simon can become free agents if they choose. McCrory remains Orioles property. - Roch

I hope Hill stays and lets the Orioles minor league pitching staff rebuild his delivery. Would hate to give up on that curveball after just half a season with us.

A humiliating roster decision for Andrew in regards to Hill. He bet the season on guys like this coming through and now Hill has been demoted to the place he really belongs: The Minors!

You cannot catch lightning in a bottle!

Good riddance to retread Hill. The Hill trade cost the Orioles in the W/L column because he proved to be unreliable, totally ineffective and a dishonest teammate.

roch, can you give an update on the 40 man roster, and who needs to be added or risked lost to the rule 5?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll try to do it over the weekend. I've run the list of some of the top young players who need to be protected, if you check the archives. But I'll file a reminder. - Roch

Roch, All these players can now be drafted in the Rule 5, correct?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyone who's off the 40-man and has been outrighted (and can't refuse the assignment and become a free agent). But teams already had a chance to claim them and declined, so not sure why they'd seem more appealing in December. - Roch

Way to clear that roster space. Yesterday Dave Johnson said that Moeller probably agreed that he would later get signed to a minor league deal, and there was a good chance that he would still be the backup next year..just a business deal. Here are my picks: South Carolina +6, USC -3, Ravens -3 and Da Bears -13.

shocking that brummie thinks macphail is crying in bed over the decision he made today...brummie---you aren't that arrogant and dumb in real life are you? you can't be. Otherwise you'd be thrown into the thames or brought to the tower...they probably reopen that joint for dopes like you....too harsh? Darn. Finally roch has had enough and told you how ridiculously arrogant and stupid you sound.

Rule 5 Draft Rules:

- Players who signed when 18 or younger are eligible for the draft after five years.
- Players who signed when 19 or older are eligible after four years.
- If these players aren't on their teams' 40 man rosters, they're exposed.
- As in the June draft, teams draft in reverse order of the previous season's standings.
- Teams that draft players must pay $50k to the player's original team.
- Those selected must remain on the 25-man roster or the major league DL for the entire season.
- Otherwise, the claiming team has to offer the player back to his original team for $25k.
- First, however, he must clear outright waivers.
- This gives the other 28 teams the opportunity to claim him. If any team claims the player, he must remain on their roster for the entire season or go through waivers again.
- The draft was more relevant before it was modified under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, when players were eligible a year earlier.

Hill would be wise to accept the assignment. Since he wasn't claimed, no one is going to offer him a major league assignment and we still have openings for starting pitchers. It's nice having him as an option without wasting a major league roster spot. Between him and Patton, we have a shot at another decent lefty for the rotation.

I hope Hill stays with us- we went a long with him- it's worth an invite to Spring Training to see if the labrum was the problem. I'd invite Simon, McCrory, Moeller and Jim Miller- strength in numbers. Brummie is wrong- you can catch lightning in a bottle- but only if you give a group of guys a shot.

A lot of people passed on Pavano, Smoltz, Pedro etc.,and wish they hadn't . . .

After hearing all the kudos that the young pitchers gave to Mike Griffin, I'd like to see him get a long time to work with Hill, just like Crowley got a long time to work with Pie. It's in Hill's best interest to stay with an organization that has potential holes to fill.

Roch,
How long does Hill have t accept ?

I believe it's eight days. - Roch

Simon if he can pitch at all next year should spend the year at AAA re-strengthening his arm. Maybe he will have a shot at making our bullpen down the road. If he can start at AAA all the better.

Hill,,man what a disappointment. Unless he can develop another off speed pitch, he’s toast. He is intriguing with that ridiculous Uncle Charlie he has, but he really was exposed in the AL East.

McCrory needs a full season in AAA. This guy should have never seen the pro level. The only reason he has is b/c of the bullpen being overworked due to the annual starting pitching breakdown. Let him develop his game w/ out being rushed for a season in the minors.

Brummie,

What do you mean Rich Hill was dishonest? B/c he didnt come forward early about his arm troubles & tried to pitch through it?

Am I missing somehting here?

jim said:

I have little hope for Mr.Hill as I cannot imagine him pitching from that wind-up and maintaining his good health. I hope I am wrong

I do think there is some hope for McCrory but his health is dicey right now and I doubt he can sty healthy for a full season. If any of these can be of help next year I will be surprised.

I have the O's 40 man roster at 33. Thats of course before they strt adding guys they want to protect like Brandon Snyder. If it comes to a roster crunch look for guys like Brian Bass, Chris Waters,Alberto Castillo and Matt Albers to be dropped. What is the official count on the 40 man roster? I believe the O's have to protect the 2005 draft picks they want to have in the organization or risk losing them.

Mike Downes said:

Sorry this is a 2nd post please add it to the 1st one.. I believe the O's have to protect the 2005 draft if thats so they have to protect Brandon Snyder and Brandon Erbe. No one else from the 2005 draft is worth protecting. I dont know if anyone from 2006 has to be protected.
