O's beginning play in Fall leagues
| | Comments (0)

Tuesday, October 13:
Roch Kubatko reports Dave Jauss will not return next season: "The Orioles have made one change to their coaching staff for 2010. Bench coach Dave Jauss will not return." [masnsports.com]

Steve Melewski examines Mike Griffin: "Norfolk pitching coach Mike Griffin was the winner of the 2009 Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award. It goes to the person who best exemplifies the qualities of the late O's coach and manager.

Griffin joined the O's organization for the 2008 season and was immediately matched with some of the club's top young arms at Bowie. The Baysox were third in the league with a team ERA of 3.54.

As pitchers like Chris Tillman, Brad Bergesen, Jason Berken and David Hernandez were ready to move to Triple-A in 2009, Griffin moved with them." [masnsports.com]

Jeff Zrebiec has news on a replacement for Dave Jauss: "[S]ince the team does not have a catching coordinator -- and employs 23-year-old Matt Wieters as its starter -- it's possible the new bench coach will have a background in catching. Also, with Trembley in his first stint as a major league manager, he may be seeking a trusted confidant who has managed previously in the majors.

Trembley would only say he was seeking the "best person" for the job." [Baltimore Sun]

Spencer Fordin writes on Dennis Sarfate: "Dennis Sarfate's winter season began on Sunday, when the right-handed reliever reported to Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific League. Sarfate, who fired off two scoreless innings in his Winter League debut, had an intentionally short break between the end of the regular season and his return to action." [MLB.com]

Yahoo! Sports gives an O's off-season team report: "The Orioles will lose just one regular from their lineup -- under-productive veteran third baseman Melvin Mora. They'll clear more than $40 million from their opening-day payroll, from the contracts of free agents-to-be Mora, Aubrey Huff and Danys Baez.

The club will look to add a veteran starting pitcher, one or more established relievers, and, most important, a power-hitting corner infielder.

While question marks dot the depth chart, the Orioles have a chunk of their roster in place for years to come.

The outfield is set with Nolan Reimold joining Adam Jones and Nick Markakis, plus Felix Pie emerging as a strong reserve. Second baseman and leadoff man Brian Roberts is under contract for the prime of his career. The rotation has a bright future behind rookies Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman and Brad Bergesen -- plus the impending promotions of two or three more quality prospects in 2010.

Team president Andy MacPhail committed to continuity when he decided Oct. 2 to keep manager Dave Trembley in place despite another disappointing September.

In announcing Trembley's continuance as the skipper, MacPhail demanded more wins. Now the onus lies on MacPhail to arm Trembley with the troops necessary to make an immediate climb up the standings -- all the while, keeping the focus on continuing the rebuilding process." [Yahoo! Sports]

Dempsey's Army looks at Brandon Erbe in the Arizona Fall League: "Coming back from injury, Erbe showed signs of life in Bowie over 14 starts. This will be the toughest competition the 22-year-old Erbe has faced in his career...should be a good test." [Dempsey's Army]
