Wednesday, October 14:
Roch Kubatko looks at qualifications for the new bench coach: "It would make sense to me if the next person has previous experience managing in the majors, with a National League past that would come in handy during interleague play, with its intricate double-switches. It also would help if he isn't burning to manage, though it's hard to find someone in that role who doesn't want to move up (Don Zimmer was perfect for Joe Torre).
T-Bone Shelby coaches the outfielders, Juan Samuel the infielders. Those responsibilities are set. Don Werner did a great job tutoring Matt Wieters behind the plate, but he isn't around the team every day, so perhaps the new guy should have a background in catching. It's not a requirement - Werner is just a phone call away - but it could be a consideration." [masnsports.com]
Dan Connolly writes on Dave Jauss not returning: "[Manager Dave] Trembley said Tuesday that Dave Jauss, who has been Trembley's bench coach for the past two seasons, will not return in 2010.
The rest of the group will resume their 2009 responsibilities: pitching coach Rick Kranitz, hitting coach Terry Crowley, first base coach John Shelby, third base coach Juan Samuel and bullpen coach Alan Dunn.
None will be considered for bench coach.
Therefore, Trembley will be searching only for a right-hand man, who likely will also serve as the spring training coordinator.
Trembley said there is no specific timetable for the hiring." [Baltimore Sun]
The Oriole Post has thoughts about Dave Jauss: "I'm not sure why Jauss is now out of a job -- whether he was not asked back or on his own accord -- let's wish him the best of luck. There's probably a lot that goes on that we fans are obviously not privy to. Maybe the staff didn't get a long, or he wanted to move on, who knows...
There's one man on the staff who received a lot of heat for some of the baserunning gaffes -- Juan Samuel -- who will be back in Baltimore next season. I know some fans were angry about his work as third base coach, plus overall lack of base-running fundamentals, but I'd like to see if things turn around in '10.
I cannot remember anyone complaining about Samuel the year prior; however, with the losing and what was seen this season, let's hope the team shows some more discipline." [The Oriole Post]
Birds Watcher weighs in on Dave Jauss' departure: "[Manager Dave] Trembley noted that he is in no rush to find somebody to take over the vacant bench coach position. He also added that none of the current coaches will fill the role. You know that Trembley and the entire organization will be looking for somebody who is an ex manager in the majors. If MacPhail is true to his word about next season, we will need somebody who also has playoff experience.
Our coaching staff has at least one person who can help a player at each position, but catcher. And with our future riding on Wieters, I have a feeling we will be adding catching knowledge to the criteria.
So, let's break this down. We are looking for an ex manager, loyalty, knows how to win, catching knowledge, and will be liked around the clubhouse. I have to admit, I can't think of anybody better but Rick Dempsey to become the bench coach." [Birds Watcher]
