Examining Arrieta
Monday: Who will play third base? | Tuesday: O's beginning play in Fall leagues | Wednesday: All about Jauss | Thursday: Examining the young pitchers and Waring | Friday: Updating Kikuchi, Bell and Snyder
Saturday, October 17:
Steve Melewski asked Triple-A Norfolk pitching coach Mike Griffin about Jake Arrieta: "Jake came to us at the half-way point and really learned a lot of things he needed to get done at Triple-A. He put some outstanding outings together late in the year.
"He's learned how to pitch at that level, but now he's learning what it takes to pitch at this level. By that I mean he's learning to pitch inside better, use his two-seam better. We worked on his changeup, that for me, really progressed nicely at Norfolk.
"When he came to us it was a little out of whack, but we can make it better and we did make it better. He now has everything in place to put things together and have a stellar career." [masnsports.com]
Roch Kubatko writes on Josh Bell: "I would expect Josh Bell to begin next season at Triple-A Norfolk, with a possible promotion to the majors later in the summer. Third base is waiting for him.
Will he still be a switch-hitter when he arrives?
The Orioles don't have any immediate plans to restrict Bell to the left side, according to
David Stockstill, director of player development. They're aware of the splits, and how Bell's production tails off dramatically as a right-handed batter." [masnsports.com]
