Wieters snubbed
| | Comments (34)

In case you felt bad that the season ended too soon for Matt Wieters, but figured he had done enough to earn the AL Rookie of the Month award for September, you guessed wrong.

Oakland pitcher Brett Anderson won the award after going 4-0 with a 2.28 ERA in four starts, with three walks and 26 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings. He held opponents to a .247 average.

Nothing wrong with those numbers. He's a worthy recipient. But Wieters certainly built a strong case for himself.

Wieters also received some votes after hitting .362, with three home runs, 14 RBIs, 13 runs scored and a .511 slugging percentage.

Minnesota left-hander Brian Duensing also garnered some votes after going 3-1 with a 2.78 ERA, 12 walks and 20 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings.

Dear Roch,

You are so awesome - in spite of a semi-depressing season (with eternal optimism for the future of course!), it's so great that you continue to feed us O's fans with nuggets of information, important updates and interesting discussion points. Even though it is now officially the end of baseball season (no O's in the playoffs, so the playoffs don't count), I'm glad I can turn to you for a fix. Addiction is a terrible thing, but you are the best dealer around.

This just in ....

Researchers have found "baseball hell". The south central Pennsylvania town of Gapsville. That's right you can't make this stuff up folks ... Gapsville, PA is baseball hell. Why you ask? Because Gapsville is roughly the center point within the triangle of Baltimore, Washington and Pittsburgh .... the three worst teams in MLB in 2009. Upon a little searching it appears a cable subscriber in that area could be fortunate enough to have both MASN and FSN Pittsburgh providing more than 400 opportunities to watch these fine teams!
Talk about 57 channels and nothing on. Elvis hand me the revolver!

.... now back to your blog already in progress.

"Addiction is a terrible thing, but you are the best dealer around." -- very funny

Gapsville, PA being Baseball Hell...sounds like it could be, hey man, do you want to watch the Orioles...Pirates...or Nationals? Or would you rather just claw your eyes out.

Reading about the pet peeves is great..nice to know the east coast has it's equivalents to Misery (Missouri) drivers, there own Idiots Out Wandering Around (Iowa drivers), etc.

Just fun all around...

So the Orioles aren't the only teams with good young pitchers, eh? I think I would have voted for Duensing. Six starts, zero runs allowed in three of them. But Anderson certainly finished the year strong also.

Oh who am I kidding, of course I would have voted for Wieters!

Hey there Brummie, It WAS you I saw 2 rows in front of me at the game, I could hear almost everything you said. Everything added up, you are over here for your job from England, you are "friends" with Roch, and you were going to meet him after the game for a few beers, and that you did some "work" with him. You were on Jeff (screech), on Andy, on Peter, on Dave T, yeah.....it was you.....and like I said before in an earlier post, you look like you couldn't fight your way out of a wet paper bag, and one more time, to paraphrase Dennis Green "You are who we thought you were!". Wimpy, Wimpy, Wimpy!!

Ashame Wieters faced the AL East for basically the whole month while Anderson shut down the likes of Seattle and Cleveland and had the aid of that huge park. Anderson also took down Texas and the Twins so he's no slouch, but Weiters accomplished his numbers off some stud pitching with a weak lineup to protect him.

Sorry Oriole Jim, but I would freely admit if it was me. I don't heckle players at the game. I save it for here. LOL

Re Pet Peeves: DRIVING. I hate it.

I only drove once in the two and a half years in the UK and it was honestly the best 30 months of my life.

One more month and I'm off to a country where they have decent rail, subway and bus services that everyone uses.

Speeding: I try to go 10 over the limit on 95, but some of these muppets from down south think that it's a Nascar race and ride my bumper. They don't get it: Speeding is expensive and leads to unwanted conversations with police officers.

I went to the website to see what the lineups were for tonight. I guess it was out of habit? I realize the O's didn't win many games and finished in last, but that wasn't what I was looking for this year. I was excited about see all the rookies come up and, the majority played well. I thought every night Bergenson pitched, we had a chance to win. I also made it a point to watch all the AB's for Nolan. When Brian and Tillman began pitching, again I made it a point to watch and see how the progressed. I can't wait to see what happens over the winter and what the team is going to look like come spring training time.
As for a new slogan. A big sign should hang over the entrance to the clubhouse, either in Sarasota or Baltimore, and it should read, "DO YOUR JOB". Meaning, "get 'em over, get 'em it", look in on a hit and run, when you have 2 strikes, choke up and make contact ON ANYTHING CLOSE, DON'T TRY TO HIT IT HARD, a lazy line drive over the infield will do, throw to the cutoff man and correct base. Catcher, infielders, HOLD UP THE SIGN TO THE NUMBER OF OUTS. All these things are basic fundamental baseball and if you "DO YOUR JOB", we have a better chance of winning.

As for Trembley "Using the Hammer", IF YOU DON'T DO YOUR JOB, "grab some pine."

Thanks for all the great work you did this year because it's been a JOY to read your info and humorious comments. Have a great off season and keep us posted.

JO

I must say what an amazing atmosphere it must be in Minnesota right now. I wonder how it will be in an outdoor stadium this time of year? Or in April for that matter.

Nebraska - I can fully relate to the Misery (Missouri) drivers. Just moved out here this year and they are the worst! And I have lived and dealt with PA drivers, Baltimore, DC Metro, and Florida blue hairs. Missouri is the worst!

Slogans for O's 2010:
A Team Reborn
Young Kids bring respect back to Baltimore
Give your best effort at all times. If you don't there is a nice spot for you on the bench.

Get in Shape for 2010.
It's time for some revenge.

Why was the Tigers 3rd base coach running up to the field of play and shouting at his runner to keep his foot on 2nd base.( after the stolen base/walk in the top of the 8th ) The runner should know what to do there. Silly Tigers. That's why I'm on VACA and there in Minnesota. HAHAHA !

My #1 driving pet peeve is when those guys driving the cars with the blue lights start asking you a bunch of questions. Why can't they mind there own business.

2010 slogan "We could be around as good as in 2004 but def. better then 2009 with a good chance around 2012 when we prolly will start losing our best players to the Yankees so you might want to start making it to some more games before they go" That's probably a liitle long tho !

Trust me, when it comes to speeding, you are being looked at if you are over 72. It doesn't matter if the enforcement zone is 55 or 65 mph.

I love the excuses which have been given over the years. I could write a book outlining them. The worst I have seen is 130 in a 55.....with a drunken excuse "cause I can" And oh yes you did to the extent of 7 citations! Unfortunately, not on the road as much as I use to be. Called moving up in the world I guess...lol

Game 163 has been one of beauty.

I can not wait until the Orioles are playing fundamentally sound nail-biters with as much at stake as this one.

Roch, Thank you for doing such a wonderful job all season long. It's been a pleasure getting so much insight on the team from someone that has his finger on the pulse of the organization. I don't comment much, but I haven't missed an entry since last fall.

Nothing is worse than Miami. Between the seniors stopping on 95 to decide if this is their exit or not or doing 20 miles under the speed limit in the same lanes as the young latinos wanting to do 20 miles over the speed limit, it is nuts

At the risk of flogging a dead horse... I'm still on the slogan idea. Some decent ones have been tossed around.

I like,
1. Back in Orange and Black!
2. Movin' On Up!
3. The future is now!

In retrospect, here would have been some good ones for 2009.
1. We need more cowbell!
2. Pining for the fjords!
3. Caca poopoo!

OK, maybe I'm just tired. I'm still bummed tonight's game isn't on TV up here. Looks like I'm missing a classic.

It's ironic that I said I don't comment much and now I'm commenting twice in an hour, but I'm watching this game alone in my basement and I just had to say it might be one of the best games I have ever watched live.

Absolutely amazing. I can't believe Rodney is back out for a third inning.

Oriole jim, Your right on with who you saw, even though he doesn't say he did it, he admits the group around him was and he was probably too. Hey he found an excuse not to meet me at the flag pole earlier, now he is afraid to meet anyone also knowing what people feel about him. If he knows this, he then must know what he is saying is unpopular if we all want his head. Coward is the best word for Brummie (Stillwell of league of their own).

This is what he said when he attended the last game:

Brummie_Oriole said:
Roch: Screech looked TERRIBLE in the field today. He was fielding scared out there. He cost the O's at least two runs with his bonehead plays in center.

A woman next to me asked why he was having so much trouble out there. I laughed and told her that is the status quo with the AAAA rejects ANDREW brings up here. They play like fools.

A lot of fans were getting angry over Screech's mistakes. I heard some guys heckling him and one questioned aloud why he was being charged MLB prices to see minor league players.

Sounds like the natives are growing restless. Someone check the KOOL AID supply!

Holy Crap what a game.

Baron, don't worry, I'm pretty sure this will be aired on ESPN Classic in about five minutes. And again in about five hours. For the next five days.

I've worked post season games only 5 seasons, but not one of them came close to the excitement that you could feel from the Metrodome. Of course, Braves fans don't acknowledge post season play unless it's Game 7 of the WS. And they usually can't be bothered to show up until it becomes an official game. Otherwise it's a waste of a ticket.

Brummie, you lie. You say you'd love to have a beverage with any of us and talk baseball. You would never in a kabillion years sit down and talk baseball with a girl. Can't say I never offered....

I need to go make my head unexplode now for having just written that.

We're taling about pet peeves:

I live in PA. ( Just a little south of York) I absolutely get peeved when Maryland drivers drive 55 in the passing lane, and don't speed it up to pass. Get it! The left hand lane is for passing, not meant for leasure driving.
You guys know who you are.....Man, I'd love to do a study and see what percentage of Maryland drivers drive this way.

I've also noticed this while driving in Maryland on 83 to Baltimore. Why do you guys do this??
