Suggs update and a linebacker shift
A day after Terrell Suggs told reporters that his status "could go either way" for Sunday night's game against the Steelers, defensive coordinator Greg Mattison seemed to support the idea that Suggs is unlikely to suit up because of a knee sprain.
"I know the organization or the football program part of it will never play anybody until he's ready," Mattison said. "That's our belief."
"We also have great trust and confidence that Terrell Suggs is doing everything he can to get ready as fast as he can."
Suggs injured his knee two weeks ago against the Browns and missed last week's game versus the Colts because of the injury.
Mattison went with an unusual rotation in the front-seven last week with Suggs out, putting Jarret Johnson in Suggs' usual rush linebacker spot and using Jameel McClain at the "Sam" position that Johnson normally occupies.
That formation was used instead of one that would have slid rookie Paul Kruger into Suggs' spot.
Mattison said today that he went with that shift mainly because of the versatility that Johnson provides.
"Jarret Johnson is a tremendous football player," Mattison said. "You could put him wherever you want because he's a football player. He goes out there, he gives it everything he has, he plays with great intensity, he's very physical. He could be a three-technique. Jarret could play wherever you want him to play.
"We felt that was important for us to get our best football players on the field, that's what we'll always try to do. He did a very good job of that."
As for McClain, he moved to the strong side and filled a role that involves both pass drops and setting the edge in running and pass-rush situations.
"Jameel did, I thought, very well," Mattison said. "We thought that was the best [thing] for our team. He is one of those guys that keeps getting reps and keeps improving as he's out there getting the repetitions. He went out there and did a nice job."
Johnson's ability to play multiple positions allowed the Ravens to put McClain in at a spot that he is fairly comfortable. They felt that rotation was better than one that would have forced Kruger, a rookie with just three career NFL appearances, to face Peyton Manning and a dangerous Colts offense.
