Suggestions for replacing Buck
| | Comments (170)

Buck Martinez's departure from MASN has left an empty seat in the broadcast booth for about half the games on the Orioles' 2010 schedule, and the network could choose to go in a few directions.

Former pitcher/pitching coach/team executive Mike Flanagan is one possibility. The network also could promote from within and expand the role of Dave Johnson, who's part of 105.7 The Fan's pre- and post-game shows and the Wall-to-Wall Baseball program that airs Saturday mornings on MASN.

According to some insiders, MASN could corral other former Orioles for special assignments, depending on where the games are played. This also would create an occasional three-man booth with play-by-play announcer Gary Thorne and analyst Jim Palmer.

Over the last few years, Nationals analysts Don Sutton and, most recently, Rob Dibble have teamed with Thorne and Palmer for the beltway series (or "parkway," as I prefer to call it), so it's worked quite well in the past.

A number of former Orioles could be under consideration. For example, Brady Anderson could join the booth during a West Coast swing, or Ben McDonald could do the same when the Orioles travel to Arlington, Texas, which is near his home in Denham Springs, La.

B.J. Surhoff still lives in the Baltimore area. Chris Hoiles has a home in York, Pa. Billy Ripken would make sense to me, and he could work around his schedule on the MLB network. And I'd personally endorse any opportunity to bring back Brooks Robinson and relive some fond childhood memories.

Which former Orioles would you like to see and hear in the booth? Perhaps your suggestions won't go unnoticed.

Replacing Buck...if we're looking to replace him with similar quality the options are virtually limitless. You could...

1) Mic a random fan (preferrably drunk) up at each game drunk one
2) Run static over the waves during his bits
3) Offer Melvin Mora a chance to stay with the organization and put his sterling English on display for all to hear

I do like the idea of Flannagan doing it though...it would be like Matt Millen doing commentary for the Lions.

Jake said:

Do you get the impression that Martinez's replacement will be a name we're all familiar with? I had no idea who Buck Martinez was before he joined MASN. I enjoyed his analysis. If getting quality talent like that requires going outside the organization, I say do it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you've been a fan of the Orioles, you'll know the names. Buck actually is well-known from his playing days with the Brewers and Royals, and from managing in Toronto. And he did games on ESPN. Now he's working for TBS, if my scorecard is properly updated. - Roch

Brooksie and you can stop the search right there!

I can't say it enough-------------JOHN LOWENSTEIN

Steve said:

I'm sure he wouldn't want to do it, but I would flip over my car to have Brooks Robinson back in the booth.

Sporadic Poster said:

Does it have to be realistic? Because, if not, Kevin Millar. Maybe in a couple years when he's finished with his playing career. I always liked hearing that guy talk, though.

I talked to Mike Bordick when he was coaching at my old high school a couple years ago. He's an interesting brain to pick and very knowledgeable. Don't know if he has any interest in broadcasting, though.

I think it would be great to have rotating guests depending on where you are playing. It would be a great way to see & hear some of our favorite players from the past. What about John Lowenstein, miss him alot.

I personally think Billy Ripken is the best choice for the position. I feel he would provide a lot of insight to the booth and I think he has done well on the radio.

Casadilla said:

Oh God Please not Dibble of Sutton. I'll shoot myself. I vote ROCH!

Jason said:

No brainer here. Dave Johnson is far and away the best option. He may even convince Jim Hunter to put away his Orioles Pom-Poms for the season.

Darrin in GB said:

I can remember Brooks doing the games on TV when I was a little kid... I would love to see him come back! Is that just a tease Roch or are they really thinking about getting Brooks back in the booth?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm just tossin' his name out there, but I wouldn't say it's out of the question. - Roch

Derek said:

We can only hope that Buck's replacement would be Brady Anderson! Not only is he a classy, well spoken individual, but it'd be nice to see the greatest Oriole of all time mixed back in with the organization. Since that probably won't happen, what are the chances of Roch Kubatko getting promoted? You'd have to trade in those polo shirts for some real suits...

tim01jmu said:

That sucks we lost Buck, he really is great to listen to on XM. Next man up - I vote Kubatko in 2010.

Gentlemen Chris said:

If it were my decision, JOHN LOWENSTEIN... no question! Very fond memories of him and Mel Proctor on HTS ... and the ever popular Tom Davis snitching food from fans while giving the scores at the breaks between innings.

If John wasn't available, I like the idea of a variety of guests for a year... see who the fans most like.

Would also consider: Ken Singleton (if he wants to leave the Spankees network)

Please, though, no Dempsey... great guy, horrible on the mic!

Dave in SP said:

Bill Ripken would be an EXCELLENT choice. Obviously Brooks but I doubt he'd want to do it. Hoiles and Surhoff also good choices. My first two choiced would be:

1) Bill Ripken
2) Dave Johnson(the pitcher)

Why don't they have Jim Palmer become the full time analyst? Does his schedule prohibit him from doing so?

He's only available for about half the games. - Roch

Reid in York said:

Roch: I like the idea of having a fresh voice as we look to a rebuiling of the franchise. Great suggestion of Chris Hoiles, or of BJ Surhoff.

Frankly Professor, I was truly hoping that they would consider you. And, even more so, I was hoping that Gary Thorne would be the one to go. This guy makes way too many mistakes.

Regards to all for a happy holiday season and may we all look forward to many more.

Harrisburg Steve said:

I like the idea of a three man booth on the road swings with Brady, Ben, etc..that would be very cool. As far as the home games, DJ would be great, as would Bill Ripken, and of course Brooksie! And, you should be considered also, and I hope you are, you deserve it!!

Hey Roch,

I would love to have Bill Ripken in the booth. It would make things more exciting and he's knows what he's talking about. Only thing with him doing that is he would have to juggle the MLB Network and baseball camps along with broadcasting.

Tom said:

Why not John Lowenstein?!

Joe in HdG said:

My order of preference:

1. Billy Ripken
2. Rick Dempsey
3. Kevin Millar (if he's not playing)
4. Brooks Robinson
5. John Lowenstein

Actually, Roch, you'd be a great candidate for some sort of television role with the Orioles.

Andrew in Rochester said:

It's probably a pipe-dream, but Ken Singleton does outstanding work for YES. It'd be awesome to see the Orioles take something - anything - of value from the Yankees. It would be double-awesome if it were Ken Singleton, Oriole Legend and great commentator.

More realistically, I'd be at least interested to hear what Chris Hoiles or B.J. Surhoff have to say. Failing that, go with Albert Belle.

Scott said:

I think they should at least make an attempt to bring back Lowenstein.

I just vote for Jim Hunter replacing Gary Thorne . . . if that can happen.

Chris in Baltimore said:

Count me in (of course) for Brooksie in the booth!!! That would rock!

I remember being a kid and watching the games on channel 2. They'd come back from commercial and show the replay of Brooks eating his nachos during the break. This was when our stadium didn't serve them yet. Very exotic stuff. But Brooks would be chowing down on them in Texas or wherever.

Even if it's 10 games a year or so. I'd stay home from the game to watch (and listen to) Brooks. I was 7 when Brooks retired from the field, but I remember him fondly in the booth. Of course, we can dream- the real world gets in the way.

I like Buck and I like Thorne. Making Palmer almost full time with "special guests" throughout the year would be fine with me. Heck, get Earl weaver in the booth for a Tampa game or two with Palmer. Fun, fun, fun.

Driskill4Life said:

Anyone but Dave Johnson or I would have to constantly report him to the HR Department in the warehouse for being bad at his job. He is one of the reasons I do not watch or listen to any of those programs...

I know Cal Ripken does some work for TBS but it would be great if we could get him in the booth for a few home games a month.

mstrchef13 said:

I'd love to hear Bill Ripken in the booth. I'd also love to hear Ken Singleton get the full-time job. I've heard him on Yankees broadcasts and he's very good. Dave Johnson would be good, as long as he can dial down the squeakiness.

kentucky mike said:

How about Ken Singleton? He seems underutilized at YES.

Dr. Tom said:

Can we have the old HTS team of Mel Proctor and John Lowenstein back? :)

Heck, can we have Jon Miller back, while I'm wishing upon a star?

I really like Jim Palmer as a color man. While I'm sure he doesn't want to commit to a full-time schedule, he can probably take on a few more games. Palmer just knows a lot about baseball, period, not only pitching. For the other games, I'd love to see Bill Ripken in the booth. He's impressed me during his time on the MLB network. If there are any games remaining, give Dave Johnson a shot. He does a good job on the MASN/105.7 shows (even though the pregame show infuriates me -- they talk for 2 minutes, then have over 2 minutes of commercials. Seriously?). Promoting from within is always nice.

DK said:

I would love for it to be Brooks. I loved when he did games when I was a kid and he deserves a role with this organization.

6. Billy
7. Vi Ripken
8. Surhoff
9. Reggie

I would be okay with Flanny in the booth. What about Scott Garceau? Or is he viewed more as a play-by-play type vs. analyst?

Anyone but Dempsey or Dave Johnson! I love the local guys but it's like nails on a chalkboard to me...

Jeff Mc said:

I'd say Dave Johnson is my first choice. I enjoy listening to him on the Tom Davis show. Billy is probably number 2. I'm intrigued by the Surhoff idea. I always really liked Surhoff and I'd be curious how he would do as a broadcaster. No to Brady. Not sure about Ben.

How about Kevin Millar?...if he possibly decides to retire.

...and if at all possible let's bring back John Lowenstein?

Chris (not "that" Chris) said:

I know he was only an Oriole for a year, but Harold Reynolds would be a nice addition. I thought he did well at ESPN before he was fired over some allegations. He is very knowledgeable about baseball and would bring a fresh perspective to the booth. I could be wrong, but he may have recently taken a job with the MLB network though. Just a thought...

jekyll & hyde said:

I'm all for Dave Johnson. I think he's great. Billy Ripken is another good option.

Puhleeze, not Dibble or Sutton. I laugh every time we have the so-called "Battle of the Beltway" or "Let's see who is actually the worst team in baseball" series. No seriously, I love my Orioles, but I hardly think I would consider that a rivalry. It's not even close to being as exciting as it was to see the Washington Senators and Baltimore Orioles.

Hey Roch,

My first vote would be for this guy called Kubatko (although that would probably be the end of this blog!). Thank goodness you are not a former Oriole, so there, you don't qualify. What would we all do without our daily fix???

DJ all the way is my vote. Straight forward, no nonsense and he knows the game plus he would bring some fire to the broadcast booth.

So Roch, what is the big gift this year for your daughter (if she reads the blog forget I even asked). Or to ask it in a different way have you at least bought it??!!

It is in no way marginalizing the significance of baseball. These guys get paid millions to play a game we as children loved to play. You've clearly missed the boat here.

Did I go on a tangent, yes...did I go off the deep end, no...did I miss the boat no...you assume that my post was a response to yours...when it was merely inspired by yours...you know what they say about assuming...

How are they lucky? Once again you minimize what they do...it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get where they are, they didn't win the lottery

I wasn't a fan of John "Tater" Lowenstein, I hated when he called homeruns "taters". I didn't really like Buck either b/c he couldn't pronounce Cesar Izturis as "Say-zar" always called him "Caesar". Someone referred to Brady as the greatest Oriole of all time? WHA?!?!?!?!

jedd said:

Whoever it is, i'd like to see them with more pro-O's bias.

Gary Thorne seems to root for the other team and nothing is worse than when the competitor hits a home run. Thorne's response is almost - well the word i'd use would probably get filtered but - it's the emotion you'd expect from somebody commencing the act described in the final moments of that" birds and the bees" stuff your parents describe. He's that into the other team in my opinion.

I've seen many other posters have a similar opinion of Thorne's game calling so I know i'm not the only one with that opinion.

I'd like somebody almost as ridiculously home team biased as the Chicago White Sox broadcasters. You hate hearing those guys when you play them, but their fans like them quite a bit.

As many have mentioned, John Lowenstein and Mel Proctor. Too bad it wasn't a package deal where Toronto had to take Gary Thorne's contract along with Buck Martinez. I can't stand Thorne. Dempsey in small doses is good, but no way on the full time gig. Brooksie would be great but I doubt he'd do it. Dibble did well in his time working with Palmer in the Nationals/Os series.

I'm sure it's been answered before, but did Lowenstein quit or was he forced to 'leave' like our last great manager Dave Johnson?

GreatWhiteHurting said:

Brooks would really bring back the childhood memories, as would Mel and John, but in reality, I think Flanagan has to be the move. He played the role that Palmer is playing now (mentoring the kids while maintaining some journalistic integrity) before becoming a part of the FO. If he wasn't too bitter about being forced out (at least he wasn't outright fired), I think he's the right fit. Frankly, I'd prefer him to Jim Palmer any day of the week. The word that comes to mind with Jim is....pompous....

Out of your list Roch, I like the idea of Hoiles and McDonald, they have been fun to listen to when they've stopped by the booth in the past. Billy Ripken does a good job on the mic as well. I agree with all the John Lowenstein votes. I still recall a game, years ago on HTS where John made the comment "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas." To this day I still love busting out with that quote whenever someone says "If we did this..."

If not John, than Dave Johnson. I love the way he tells it like it is, good or bad!

1) Brooks--for as many games as he would like to do.
2) B. Ripken
3) Flanagan--although it may be awkward for the organization.
4) B.J. Surhof with some alternating with Frank Robinson (give Frank any dates he would like).
5) Rotating among the many former Orioles--Hoiles, Brady Anderson, etc.; but give preference to Hall of Famers (National HOF, then Baltimore's HOF).

Larry said:

I hesitate to say anything critical of Brooks Robinson because he was a childhood hero and is a tremendous guy. BUT those TV broadcasts he and Chuck did were as exciting as watching paint dry. I love hearing from ex-Orioles - Palmer consistently lends insight and perspective - but the priority should be finding someone who is good at color commentary.

Btw, my favorite memory of Brooks as commentator involved his analysis of what fans should do after a baseball strike ended. The fans, Brooks said, can either go back to the game or send a message by staying away. Neither a very satisfying choice. In Brooks's words, "Fans get the short end of the double-edged sword." Priceless.

Ha - before I read all the way through I was thinking "Please let Brady be under consideration!"

Bill Ripken would be awesome - I think he's the perfect mix of knowledgable and opinionated for the job.

Nothing personal against Dave Johnson, but I couldn't tolerate listening to him every inning of every game. He talks way too much and way too fast, and that's on radio. He also insists on only referring to the players by their nicknames, as if he's actually on the team, and while that's okay in small doses, it gets annoying really fast:

"Bergy pitched a great game tonight, but it was really that clutch hit from Jonesy and then that great double play from Izzy and B-Rob to secure the save for J.J. that won the game." You get the idea.

DMG said:

"Heck, can we have Jon Miller back, while I'm wishing upon a star?"

I second that. Even when they were bad, the Orioles were still fun to listen to when Jon Miller was on the mike. His knowledge of baseball lore is incomparable, as is his delivery.

Failing that, I'd have Peter Angelos do the commentary himself. Maybe having to actually watch his team for 162 games would convince him to increase the payroll a bit.

Stab me in the eardrums if it ends up being Rick Dempsey or Dave Johnson.

Kenny Singleton would be a major coup.

I'd love to see the Proctor-Lowenstein pairing make a comeback. Gary Thorne disappears way too often for Jim Hunter to be the back-up play-by-play man. He's tolerable for the pre- and post-game shows, but brutal in-game. Get me a reliable #2 team that we'd all love: Mel and Brother Low.

Bill in Salisbury said:

Brooks would be the best choice, but I doubt that he would be available that often. He and Scott Garceau did an outstanding job back in the 80's. I like the idea of the 3 man booth or using former Orioles like Jim Palmer on a revolving basis. There is so much rich history that the Orioles could link to. Just think how much the current roster could learn about such things as "winning" as they interact with them before games etc. And the broadcasts would not be the same night after night. Not that they should dwell on the past but certainly embrace it.

Has there been any traction to the ideas of an "old timers game", our minor league affiliates playing at OPACY while the birds are out of town, or any others discussed a while back on this blog?

JPA said:

Billy Rip would be a nice option as his skills have really improved behind the mic. I am starting to get the sense that both Ripkens prefer to not associate themselves too closely with the O's only but like to see themselves as baseball ambassadors nationally and internationally. Nothing wrong with that- it just makes it less likely we see them in a MASN booth.

I would like Brooks for 10 games a season as someone suggested. I don't see Singleton leaving YES unless they gave him a stake in MASN operations. Dave Johnson is where he belongs. He does a very solid job, but I am not sure it would translate to in-game commentary. I like the concept of guest announcers.

I really have a strong dislike for Gary Thorne's frequent mistakes on-air doing Oriole games. Just having a voice is not enough for me. He is wildly inaccurate multiple times every game. Plus, his ESPN-rooted love for the Yankees and Sox is distasteful. I think he has lost track of what booth he was in on a few occasions.

Flanny? That would ruin his cover in the witness protection program since whatever actually happened to him, happened to him.

Roch- I don't have the sense that you aspire to be a play-by-play guy, but if a scenario to do more of that work opened up, would you try it?

Not play-by-play. That would be a disaster. - Roch

I've never liked Gary Thorne and can't understand why he was picked in the first place and why he's still here. Sorry to see Buck Martinez go, it should have been Thorne.

As for the new analyst, I could live with Flanagan. Brooksie is a fan favorite but probably an unrealistic choice. Lowenstein's day has come and gone. Dave Johnson doesn't excite me. Bill Ripken is OK, but not fantastic. So if Palmer can't do all the games, looks like Flanagan by default to me.

I hope the people making the decisions understand it needs to be about entertainment value since anybody still watching the o's would watch without any commentary whatsoever.

1 - John lowenstein.
2 - Rex hudler (he got canned and is very high energy, not my favorite but high energy)
3 - you.
4 - millar if he hangs it up

Jim P said:

I have lots of fond memories of Brooks in the booth, but I suspect that age and health may prevent him from coming back. I enjoyed Lowenstein as well. Not because he was that good, but because he was such a character. My favorite Lowenstein quote: "Well, Mel we all know hindsight is worth 20%."

Realistically, however, Bill Ripken would be excellent. He's been fantastic on XM radio's MLB channel for years. Getting Ken Singleton would be great as well.

i'm not a huge fan of Billy Ripken after hearing him on the MLB network so much. he always seems, sad, down, and tired. I wouldn't mind having the radio team come down to the booth--Fred and Joe--and then let someone else replace them on the radio. i like those guys...too bad the HDTV and radio aren't even close to matching up. I used to listen to Miller when i was a kid with the volume on the TV off. Also, i've definitely grown more used to Palmer in the booth. Still a know it all, but he's incredibly sharp and doesn't hold back which i like. Also, please NO Jim Hunter. He's just way too happy. it saddens me.

BDeegan said:

I would prefer Brother Low, he was comedy gold back in the day. Dempsey- no, and Dave Johnson- please God no. I watch a fair bit of Nats games (when they are the HD game) and I don't think its fair to compare Sutton and Dibble. Sutton is a bit boring at times but is a consummate professional. Dibble is a child, and is famous for NEVER talking to the players during BP, or doing any homework pre-game. In this regard (and many others) Cakes runs laps around him.

I'd vote Lowenstein, but I wouldnt mind Flanny either. If I couldnt get Brother Low, or Flanny- I suppose I could settle for "Salty" Mike Gorman.

beardbr said:

Okay, this may not bode well with some folks, but I think Mike Mussina would probably be a real interesting choice. He is an intelligent, and probably could really add some interesting insight. I know his brother has done some radio/broadcasting, and he doesn't live far from Baltimore. Or if Ken Singleton could be lured away from YES. I have an animosity toward the Evil one's, just like most Oriole fans, but I know Ken still talks about playing with the Orioles during the YES braodcasts

I thought Books was fantastic as a color man when he did it. But that was quite awhile ago. If he's still up on who's who in today's game, then he should be a top choice, along with Bill Ripken. If not, I'd go with Ripken.

fkterp said:

lowenstein was great billy ripken would do well..knowledgeable and funny. i've never heard hoiles speak but catchers usually know the game better than most.

please no dempsey, no flanagan no johnson. heard them all and really would not want to listen to any of the 3 for a complete game.

I prefer keeping Palmer and adding any of the following: Brooks, Lowenstein, B. Ripken, or D. Johnson. All are quality O's and very knowledgeable. I also like the idea of a third person in the booth on occasion - that's where you could do your "guest" appearances like Brady, Hoiles, and Ben.

Flanny has a nice sense of humor (if you catch it) but is far too mono-tone for me. He put me to sleep years ago when he was in the booth.

Good old days w/ Proctor and Lowenstein on HTS and Miller, Thompson, & even Angel on the radio.

Roch, I think ex-Oriole Kevin Millar would bring a couple of things to the broadcast booth that none of the others mentioned would: his humor and his direct knowledge of most of the current players around the majors, whom he's played with and/or against. So, I think he's be a great fit if available.

Of course, many of the others mentioned would be great, too. Brooks, Billy, Harold would all be terrific.

Then there's Roch Kubatko. Do you have an interest in jumping into that job. Would you consider it if asked by MASN?

Despite a lack of significant improvement during his tenure as GM, I always enjoyed Flanagan's commentary. He's generally more knowledgeable than the average broadcaster, has a good sense of humor, and seems to collaborate well with his partners. He did use the "He has the hands of a sturgeon joke." a few too many times, but I'd enjoy having him back. I wouldn't mind more Palmer broadcasts either.

Well I see I'm late to today's party...

I must admit that if either Hunter or Dave Johnson get the gig, I'm liable to slit my wrists in April. Actually, I'll just have to listen on the radio and not watch the broadcast.

I'm not particularly fond of either Hunter or Johnson because they consistently misinterpret the rules on questionable calls.

It drives me up the wall when I'm on the field umpiring and someone quotes a rule or interpretation because of something one of those two boneheads said on the tv or radio. And I just find Johnson's whiney voice to be too painful to listen to on a daily basis.

Unrealistically, I'd love to see John Miller back.

For years after his departure, the Orioles had John's voice on their automated phone system when you dialed the O's main telephone number.

I'd be all for bringing someone in from outside the organiziation like Buck with someone that has knowledge from playing and managing in the big leagues.

Within the organization, I think Flannagan could offer some great insights especially having been the VP of Operations or whatever it was in the GM capacity that he served. Billy Ripken would be my next choice.

They have a nice balance of constructive criticism and a sense of humor.. I wish we had that on tv with masn not just here with you Roch.. So please replace Buck? Where is he going anyway? another, we use to do it back in the day and I don't think it would be a bad thing to do again.

JimGinSP said:

Having grown up listening to Phil Rizzuto on Yankees broadcasts, when I moved to the area 30 years ago and started listening to Brooks' Arkansas drawl it was quite jarring. It didn't take long to appreciate however that Brooks' was Phil's southern cousin. Both were the consumate hometown heroes with lots of happy birthday greetings to locals intertwined with stories of visits to neighborhood restaurants or youth club banquets that announcers who live out of hotel rooms just can't replicate. Both of course had a love for the game and had played it on its highest level.

Brooks would be worthwhile having in on a more frequent basis. Maybe team him with Hunter on Sundays.

Before a few others mentioned Mike Mussina, who probably is still enjoying being retired with a lot of money and most likely wouldn't be interested, I thought of Eddie Murray.
Hall of Famer like Palmer who has a love for the game and remembers the "Oriole Way" taught by Sr.

But for something completely different.... I propose teaming Gary Thorne with Joan Jett!

Yes Joan Jett, personally chosen by Cal to sing the national anthem before the streak tying game, she's long been a fan. Jumping from fan to color analyst of course is quite the stretch but teamed with Thorne it could be must watch TV. 50/50 chance it ends up a train wreck but 10 years from now we still would be saying "remember the season Joan Jett did the color?"! Of course this would give the O's the perfect opportunity to phase out the late John Denver's "Country Boy" during seventh inning stretch, to be replaced of course with Joan hanging out of the booth ala Harry Caray while "I Love Rock 'n Roll" blasts over the OPACY sound system. Oh those first few guitar chords each game would be epic!
Oh and I see some School of Roch tie-ins as well!

We need new traditions! Joan Jett I say!

I don't want someone who's going to brown nose Angelos. I want someone who will speak his mind when needed if the product on the field isn't producing. I think Brady would be a good choice. His sarcasm might need to be toned down a bit, but I think it would be refreshing. I think Billy Ripken would be a good choice also. Flanny would be acceptable, but we've been there, done that. Give someone new a chance. Brooks isn't going to do it so that's just a pipe dream. Lowenstein, while certainly entertaining, wasn't a very good analyst.

3 Frank Robinson An O's legend and a true old schooler
4. Rotating Guests (not just ex-O's but also maybe someone from the opponents media contingent). Its always nice to hear an outsider's perspective, especially against Jim Hunters delusional optimism. Did anybody else cringe when Hunter wrapped up a road trip where we lost 10 of 12 by saying "the great strides we were making". Hey our starters averaged 3 innings instead of 2, lol.
4. No Dempsey No matter what--If i gotta hear this guy make another proclamtaion as silly as how sarfate should be in the rotation and how he could see him being a solid #2, Im gonna puke. Dempsey is worse than a politician the way he distorts realty. How long is this goofball gonna milk a rain delay performance from the 70's ? How can ANYONE take this cartoon seriously? Berken a #2, really ? Even those drunk on the orange cool aid arent this out of touch with reality
5 NO Dave Johnson He's definitely a company man or at least on the tom davis show he is. Ill admit, im not as opposed to him as Dempsey because I havent seen as much of him. What I have ssen of him On the tom davis show, he's definitely an Angelos man and we've got enogh of them already. Seriously

Brooks would be great of course. I was pretty young when he last called games, but I'm pretty confident we'd all be satisfied.

Flanagan was pretty good that year or two he was in the booth. It would have to finally be an official job change for him. He can't be so conneted to the team and also call games.

The rotating '90s O's tour seems interesting. I mean even the best color guys can get boring when you watch every game. They are going to have similar analysis and anecdotes. I liked Buck but it had gotten so that I could deliver most of his analysis myself.
