Crunch time for the Wiz

Alright, enough with all the Gilbert Arenas jokes already..."Did you hear that Coach Saunders was changing Gil's position from point guard to..." If I have to fill in the blanks for you, or if you think that joke is funny, we can no longer be friends.
Bottom line on Gil for bringing his guns into the locker room and using them as a prop for a joke on teammate Javaris Crittenton, then following it up by mocking the situation with his faux gunfire in the pregame introductions at Philly a few nights ago - a boneheaded move that earned him an indefinite suspension and cost him roughly $147,000 per game missed. I don't know about you, but most people would love to earn that sum in a year, let alone in a single night...looks like Agent Zero will be a lot lighter in the wallet by season's end, depending on the length of the suspension.
But for now, let's put Hibachi in the rear view mirror and hope that somehow this addition by subtraction is a positive for the Wizards. If the Wiz have a prayer at the playoffs, they have to regroup and get hot in the remainder of January.

No, I didn't trip down my stairs and hit my head before I started writing this blog. And yes, I did mention 'Wizards' and 'playoffs' in the same sentence. Just look at the Eastern Conference standings: as poorly as the Wizards have played - and at 11-22, it's hard to imagine they could get any worse - they are still just 3.5 games out of the last playoff spot. There is plenty of time to make up that ground in the standings, but it has to start now.
The Wizards have 13 games remaining in January, and 10 of those are at Verizon Center. True, the Lakers, Blazers, and Magic will be tough tests, but Washington also gets to entertain the Kings, Pistons, and Knicks in DC.
The Wiz have a tough road game at Atlanta, but the other two roadies are against Chicago and New Jersey, teams with a combined 17-51 record. It's time for guys like Randy Foye, Nick Young, and Earl Boykins to fill the void left by Arenas' absence and to help take some of the scoring load off of Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. This is the perfect opportunity for Randy Foye to showcase himself in the last year of his contract and validate Ernie Grunfeld's move to acquire him and Mike Miller for the Wizards' fifth pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. With his workload increased, there's no reason Foye shouldn't double his current scoring output from 7.5 to 15 points per game or more. If that happens, the loss of Gil won't be quite so painful. Glue guy Mike Miller is getting healthier, but still hasn't played in a game since November 21st; the Wiz miss his hustle and 3-pointers, and he can't get back soon enough.
At least the Wizards are used to playing without Gilbert Arenas; it certainly isn't a foreign concept to his teammates, since Agent Zero missed 149 games over the previous two seasons with multiple knee injuries. The rest of the roster has to pitch in and contribute, and quickly, or the 2009-2010 season will be one that Wizards fans will soon want to forget.

PLAYOFFS?! DON'T TALK ABOUT PLAYOFFS!
Gil is a nub. Was the gun point show before the 76ers game funny...? Of course it was! But it also was immature. Time for Nick Young and Randy Foye to sack up or shut up, great opportunity for them.
Here's a vote for voiding the contract and moving on with life. Blow it up now. These guys aren't going to win a championship together - it's time for Ted to lead them and do what he does best - tear it down to build it back up.
I vote the Wizards get all the guns. Trade for Delonte West and Stephen Jackson. Get Jayson Williams out of jail. Change the name to the Bullets. Go for Broke
