Perfect Timing
Pete Carroll tried this before - In 1994 in New York and soon after with the Pats, and it was underwhelming.
He was a .500 coach, went to the playoffs a couple times, and he was solid; but he would soon stake his claim as one of the elite college coaches in the nation.
Now after an awesome nine-year run at USC, seven PAC 10 crowns, and two BCS titles, it's the perfect time to run for the big score - $7 million per (same as Shanny is getting with much less of an NFL resume) is too sexy to turn down.
He knows the college talent, and he'll have total control, which is what every big name coach wants, and his run at USC is over.
Oregon and Oregon State are now knocking down the USC mystique and the Trojans won't dominate like they did for the last eight years. Washington will soon get there too, so with a lot of his underclassmen jetting to the league and the black cloud over the program from the Reggie Bush years looming, Carroll's timing couldn't be more perfect!
Oh, and did I mention the $2.6 mill raise? Whether or not it works remains to be seen, but the decision itself is brilliant.

USC is definitely vulnerable again. Once they are on probation, it's going to be a tough couple of years...maybe Notre Dame will rise again, when all of SC's players transfer to South Bend after it's no bowl games for SC
Carroll won ONE BCS Championship! Not two, but one! Do you research! LSU won it in the 2003/2004 season, upsetting Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. That year USC won the AP NC and LSU won the BCS NC.
