Sarfate update
The Orioles are trying to work out a trade for Dennis Sarfate, rather than risk losing him to a waiver claim, after designating him for assignment on Wednesday.
Once the Orioles cleared room on the 40-man roster for Miguel Tejada, they had 10 days to trade Sarfate, release him or put him on waivers.
Sarfate believes that several teams will be interested in him. A fastball that tops out in the upper 90s will get a guy noticed.
Sarfate is out of options, a prime reason why the Orioles designated him. He would have to stay on a club's 25-man roster or pass through waivers before being outrighted to the minors.
You'll have to figure out which teams are in the market for a right-handed reliever.

Roch,
Why would anyone trade for him when they can get him in a few days and not lose a player in their organization?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
What if someone else claims him first? I think the Orioles are just seeing if they can get something in return. Maybe it will be a PTBNL. Man, I hope not. - Roch
For your sake, I hope a PTBNL isn't on the way.
Next week is fine for your call-in. February 8th at 8:15 p.m. The call-in number is 301-314-9979. Thanks for doing this.
Luke

Just remind me when it gets closer. - Roch
It's not very likely that Sarfate will be passed up on if he's put on the waiver wire. There's always some team willing to take a risk on a hard-throwing reliever; may as well see if you can get something in return with a trade. Besides that, if I'm right, there are three options when a player is claimed on waivers ...
1) The team that waivered the player can rescind the waiver and keep the player on the major league roster.
2) Allow the claim, turn over the existing contract to the claiming team while being paid the waiver fee.
3) Arrange a trade with the team that claimed the player within two days of the claim.
So it could just end in a trade anyway.
Maybe they could swap him for one of the 500 lefties Detroit has in their bullpen...
You know, I really hope Sarfate gets on with another team in the AL East and shows the O's they missed out. I liked that guy a lot. Of course I hope the O's win those games ultimately, but in his inning or two I want him to do well.
Speaking of players to be named later, when is Evan Longoria going to arrive in Baltimore to complete the 2008 Chad Bradford trade?
After the Stokes trade I would be absolutely shocked if the team (s) [i think the S is for PR and trade purposes] interested was not the Mets. Plus with Maine, Sarfate, and Gary Matthews the Mets could try to clone our success (where's David Newhan when you need him).
Roch - Any word on who the player to be named is in the Sarfate trade?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And so it begins... :-) Roch
I say trade him a 12 bats, 5 bags of mound drying agent, the old Jack and coke slushie machine that was at one time in Oriole park and a shin gaurd for Jones.
Cover your eyes, jdb, but even though rosters aren't yet finalized the CAIRO and Baseball Prospectus projections are out. The good news is that the Orioles make fourth place in both systems. BP, which didn't do a great job projecting last year, has the O's at 78 wins in 2010. CAIRO has them at 70. In this division, a .500 season would have to be seen as huge progress.
When they named Sarfate as the guy to go, he was clearly not the "most deserving" to get the axe. But it did make sense. With Johnson, Uehara, Mikolio, Meredith, Hernandez, Berken, LeBron, and Albers as right handed possibilities out of the bullpen, I think they decided to designate Sarfate for two reasons. First he had no options so he would have had to make the team in order to not be subjected to waivers. If the O's keep 3 lefties, and have 12 on the staff, that leaves four slots for RH pitchers. Johnson, Uehara, and Meredith are nearly locks, and at least Mikolio and Hernandez (and perhaps LeBron and Albers) should be rated above Sarfate, meaning it would be unlikely that he could make the team. So, since you are going to designate him at some point anyway, (and here is the second reason), you might as well do it when it is more likely that he will be picked up by a team, both for his sake and the O's potential to get something for him through a trade.
It could be that the guy designated for Hendrickson is also someone that somebody wants, instead of just a roster fodder type guy, but I'm thinking it will not be one of the guys listed above.
Roch, doesn't Albers still have an option left? I have a feeling that if he didn't he might have been the guy instead of Sarfate.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe so. I'll need to get an updated list in Sarasota. - Roch
Sarfate will get a ST invite somewhere & likely end up in the minors
So if a trade can't happen, does that mean he goes through waivers? Or would he return to us as a player not on the 40 man roster?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He can be placed on waivers, and if he goes unclaimed, the Orioles can outright him to Triple-A. Or they could just choose to release him, but that seems unlikely. - Roch
Jeff T, I know where you're coming from, but I can't agree with you on this one. I wish for the best for Sarfate, too, but I don't want to see him succeeding with a team in the AL East, because that means he's helping one of the Orioles' divisional rivals succeed and I don't want to see that, especially if it's New York or Boston.
In fact, that's one of the last I want to see happen to the O's. Can't give those teams any more edge than they already have.
This guy has the stuff.
I remember him pitching for the Astros &
he had one hell of a fastball.
He reminded me of a very young Nolan Ryan with the Mets.
Just needs some time to harness it.
I think the Astros should take another chance on this guy.
If anything at least we would have some compinsation
for losing Miggy to Baltimore.
The guy's going to be 29, he's never learned command and has no off-speed pitch worth throwing. He's a fringe major leaguer; the velocity will keep him in big-league camps for the next few years, but it will be a major upset if he's ever a team's third-best reliever.
My prediction: Andy will get some scrap retread for Sarfate and the Yes Fans on here will exclaim "Andy has done it again! Stick to the plan!"
Paul: I have heard very little on your view of Hobgood. Did you have any thoughts on Keith Law's prospect rankings? I am surprised he is not on there with all the hype that surrounded him when Dandy Andy and Ole Joe drafted the guy.
Combined with your prospect link last week, we are now seeing a disturbing trend in which Hobgood is getting low marks despite signing so early.
Remember, many of us wanted Matzek or another pitcher drafted. I think even Roch backed Matzek's selection on draft day and responded to a question by Jack with "Crow would have been a safer pick."
Whatever they get will be a good deal. Sarfate can't throw strikes.
for t p t b n l two words..crash davis
Look for the inclusive PTBNL in Andy's deal.
The Tejada trade is looking like a deflated tire right about now. What did we get? SALARY RELIEF, A streaky hitter, couple of pitchers who never cut it in the majors and a washed up attitude filled Tejada back, and did I mentioned SALARY RELIEF?
What ever happened to the money we saved in that deal? The Huff deal? Or all the contracts that came off the books over the past 3 years?
Budget Baseball at its best! Try to make the biggest profit without having to spend to put a competitive team on the field. Why are they still charging MLB prices at OPACY then?
Well I hope the O's do not lose him for nothing....it only makes sense for a team to trade for him if they really really like his pitching and want him on their team. If the team waits rather than let the wavier claim process work itself out a team desiring Sarfate could lose him to the worse record team in front of them....so with that in mind maybe Sarfate wil get traded for a prospect or money.....not many 97mph pitchers just laying around these days.....I still find it weird that the O's do not think he is good enough to make the team if healthy.
Ryan: You are discussing in-season trade waivers, and you would be correct about that. This is a different scenario. Sarfate was designated for assignment, which means he is no longer on the Orioles 40-man roster. The Orioles have a 10 day period in which to work out a trade with another team for him (preferred option #1). If this does not happen, then there are two options: he gets claimed by one or more teams and his rights are assigned to the team with the highest waiver priority (I believe it is in reverse order of last year's final standings) or he doesn't get claimed by another team and still remains part of the Orioles system, just not on the 40-man roster. However, as someone out of options, I believe that he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment and become a free agent.
Since Roch is reporting several teams with interest, there will either be a trade or we will lose him on waivers. With multiple teams interested, if you are the Phillies, for example, and you know that the Royals are going to put in a waiver claim, then you know you can't get him on waivers. If you really want him, then you need to trade for him. So does every other team besides whichever team is lowest on the waiver order.
Roch, have you heard any thing about resigning Erik Bedard? I know Andy MacPhail said we were all done with position players but it sounded like he had something else up this sleeve.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing has really changed. The Orioles are interested and Bedard is open to returning here. But there's still the question of when he'll be ready to pitch and what kind of contract he'll accept. - Roch
If reference to Erik Bedard, I think it's more appropriate to ask if not when he will be able to pitch effectively again. Recovery from labrum surgery is not a simple matter.
Ahh thank you! I agree a trade with Detroit for a lefty would be great. Hopefully he can settle into our AAA squad because I feel he might have a future with us. Hard to tell. Man a couple more weeks until spring training!! Go O's! And thanks Roch for your posting! Keeps me interested in o's baseball year-round
My money is on Sarfate going to the Cubs...
Roch,
do you get the feeling that Bedard's signing may drag on past opening day, maybe even into early May? Or do you think he wants to sign before ST starts?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I think he'd like to sign earlier. - Roch

What did you think he would get for a marginal, righthanded, middle relievier? If he gets anyone back at all, that would be a big plus.
I've been trying to be patient with you and Paul/Jack, but you two really are complete idiots.
Besides salary relief during a period that we had no shot at the playoffs we were able to get some young, cheap, talented guys with upside that had some moves backs to the minors left. Albers and Safarte were both really good in 2008, IMO, and I think they may still have some hope. Scott has been nothing less than a machine. He plays average/above average defense, since nobody every believes me when I say that (STEVE! =0)) I have provided the link:
He is the epitome of a poor man's Carlos Pena. His average is better, he can play more positions, he is much cheaper, younger, and if you give him the 600 ABs that Pena is allotted then he would be come in around 35 HRs. We get Tejada back, still have Scott and Albers, and have been able to save money and lose more games that ended up netting us better draft picks. I think Scott ends up getting something of value at some point.
Roch, do think we are done for the off-season? If not, what tier are we looking at? Seems like we have to take a shot at something with upside: Bedard, Smoltz, Pedro, etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another lefty reliever. Probably minor league contract with spring update. Bedard still a possibility. - Roch
It's sad that Brummie is so consumed by spreading his message of doom and gloom that he has to resort to slamming 18 year old kids fresh out of high school.
We need a SS or a 1B prospect return in the trade.
Maybe throw in Wiggy or someone.
Well you have Liz,Hill,McCrory,Waters,Pauley,Ray to name a few O's discards,I can see Sarfate being picked up somewhere. If not he'll get a ST invite frm the O's.
