Parker suspended
| | Comments (47)

Orioles minor league pitcher Brian Parker has received a 50-game suspension from the office of the commissioner after a second positive test for a "drug of abuse" that violates the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension for Parker, currently on Double-A Bowie's roster, will begin at the start of the 2010 season.

Parker led Single-A Frederick with 35 appearances last season, going 4-3 with a 4.31 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings.

Never heard of the guy. Hopefully someone can step up and take his place in the pen. I would think this wouldn't be hard at the A level, but what do I know?

Does anyone know if there is any way to tell if the suspension is for PEDs vs some other illegal drugs? Should that matter to us fans?

Some people just never learn....this is NOT a few years back Brain Parker...testing is accurate...what a dumb dumb move that was.

What was he caught with? Can you find out?

Sloooooow News Day Roch? Parker shouldn't make a headline. Where's the news brewing on the fact that Bedard is getting ready to re-up with the Mariners very, very soon. Ground Hog day is over Andy! Don't be afraid of your own shadow! Give Bedard the key to the city if you have to, the O's will need him once they flip Millwood for a future SS. Come on Andy, pull the trigger!

I wrote about Bedard earlier in the day. And yes, it's a slow news day around here. - Roch

How do you feel about McGwire coming back as a coach in the Cardinals organization? I am certainly not a proponent of steroid use, but you sing the praises of other organizations and use every opportunity to bash McPhail.

Are the Yankees are garbage organization because they retained ARod, Giambi, and Petitte after they were discovered to have used steroids?

Give it a rest, your act is tired.

At this point, if someone gets suspended for testing positive a 2nd time, he's either an addict or a complete idiot. Either way, cut him loose and let another team deal with his issues. I no longer have tolerance for this.

Trolls, your bus is leaving! So explain to me how Andy is involved with this. You two truly enjoy this nonsense don't you? What's your other line of work, creativing PC viruses?

Jack, you really are pathetic. Roch kicks you off, and you come back as Paul. How old are you 12? Scratch that, that's an insult to 12 year olds.

Roch,

This kid Parker has more problems than just failing a drug test a second time. Forget about the sports side, I just hope he can get his act together, and figure out the bigger game ... LIFE!!

This sounds a lot more like a recreational drug use violation than it does PEDs. I'm not going to speculate or assume that this kid is addicted to something illegal, but that's the first thing that came to me based on the way the press release was worded. If that's the case I wish him the best of luck getting better.

Hey Brummie, have you had time out of your busy "journalistic" schedule to send Roch those articles you "wrote"? You seem to have plenty of time to put up more of you stupid, unfunny posts. As those modern poets Motley Crue once said: "Don't go away mad, just go away"

Roch, great job on the Wall To Wall Baseball today. I hope they have you on more often. Any word on whether or not Playmakers with you and Amber is going to be back on?

People seem quick to presume this kid got caught on the juice. The statement just says a "drug of abuse," which I think would make steroids *less* likely. Maybe he got popped for pot or coke. It doesn't have to be steroids.

JPA said:

I don't think it is too harsh to release a twice busted offender. He is a young guy who made a mistake. Then he made the same very serious mistake again. I would applaud the organization for making a statement given their past history with these muddy waters. I don't expect them to do anything, but would like to see something other than lip service here. What would I want if it were Tillman or Matusz? I would painfully want them to be released as well for two transgressions. Before I start any false rumors, those guys seem WAYYY too smart to get mixed up in that stuff.

I don't know how to read the Bedard situation. I think he is done quite honestly. I thought we should have picked up a REAL number 4 pitcher but I also like a guy like David Hernandez as a test candidate. But we only have Millwood on a short deal. Was there no one available on a multi-year deal? What are we looking at in 2011. Still a lot of holes all over the diamond. I personally believe more questions have been left unanswered this offseason than answered. I will be patient but I have to admit, the current approach has a few gaps in it.

I have to say that I fear how many players may still be juicing, despite the tests that have been established over the last few years. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but I'm sure that the drugs will always adapt faster than the tests.

Then again, I guess I don't know if this is a performance enhancing drug or something recreational (in Parker's case, that is).

Nevertheless, I do have to wonder about whether MLB players would, as a whole, quit PEDs cold turkey after PEDs had become such a part of the game over the last two decades.

Roch, is this a topic you'd weigh in on? I'd be interested to hear what you think, but I reckon it's also a pretty controversial topic. Some issues aren't so easily addressed in a comment on a blog, and I'd respect your caution.

Thanks for the forum.

Roch,

Good job on 105.7 today, you should be a co host on that show or at least make a weekly appearance. Anyway, suggestion for you, you are way too nice to these downers(Brummie, Paul, their alter egos, made up names whatever). I have not once ever heard anything POSITIVE out of their mouth when it comes to the O's. I hate giving any of them attention but its hard to ignore sometimes. Their act is old and tired. I understand they have T.O. syndrome and probably were neglected as children but I would just cut them loose from this blog, I am sure most of your bloggers would agree.

Keep up the great work Roch, we all appreciate your blogs...

The kid needs help and I hope he gets it, whether it's from the Orioles or some other (baseball or non-baseball) organization. Otherwise he'll have nothing but regrets once he realizes how badly he's blown a golden opportunity. Best of luck to him. I've traveled down the wrong road more than once. I'm grateful for the people who were there to help rather than show me the door. Ultimately, however, the decision is up to him.

Brummie,

First off, I am not one to call employees to get someone fired. If you are doing something wrong, that is your problem. Second, I still don't believe you what so ever. We were to meet at the flag pole during a game, you never showed, you told us your section you would be in, I went there and called out your name, you never answered, you said you met Roch but didn't reveal yourself because of what, who knows, afraid to show your just a kid. Then I give you my email and you said you would send me a picture of you and little brummie somewhere in Berlin, that never came, but you then said to me you would send me something from Berlin, but you wouldn't be in it. Roch and others call you out and you send nothing and have an excuse for it like everything else, Roch even said to send it and he would not post it, it would be just for him. I am sure you still didn't send anything.
You know Brummie, it really shouldn't matter what you do, who you are, how old you are, even whether your telling the truth or not. You bring this on yourself. Maybe if you just stuck to talking baseball, quit being negative on every subject, keep your personal life out of it, keep the anti MacPhail rants to once a week, and keep your negative attitude about Baltimore media to yourself, we would all just leave you alone and let you be you. You don't get respect till you earn respect, and you haven't earned it at all.

Sorry Roch, but I just had to say something. Now, "HOW BOUT THOSE ORIOLES!"

Tracy said:

Just curious, is there a listing anywhere that tells what all types of drugs are on the banned substances list. I think people tend to see that and think only in terms of steroids, but I believe there are also some illicit drugs that are on that list as well. I can't see that MLB would be against steroids and pay no attention to, say, cocaine use. I have no clue who Parker is or what he may have been doing, just wondering.

I'm guessing that marijuana isn't on the list or there are a lot of ML players who would probably be in trouble with that one ... including Cy Young winning Tim Lincecum.

Getting a little desperate now aren't we. The plan is coming to fruition and everyone that knows anything about baseball can see it and most experts are praising it so you you have to step so low to attempt to make a joke about a kid that obviously has a serious problem and equate it to the plan. On another note, are you more afraid of us commenting on your work if you posted a link of it or more afraid your boss would come to this sight and see the amateurish comments you post after those comments were posted? I'm pretty sure your boss wouldn't give credence to some whack job posting comments on your articles but I'm pretty sure he'd have a problem with amateurish drivel you spout on here.

Roch-

How does this possibly happen at this point?
Everyone knows they are going to be tested. So, 2 things can happen. Either, you're a dope, and you just keep using. OR, you are stupid, and can't read the rule book as to what is ok, and not ok to take.

Doesn't the organization have some trainer or something that spans ALL levels and reviews what EACH player takes and lets them know if it is ok or not ok?

I know the Yankees implemented that last year. That each player from rookie league on up, submits a list of vitamins and etc. that they take to train with, and the team lets them know if it is OK to take BEFORE THEY BEGIN USING A PRODUCT.

Wow, RichD, we actually agree on something...Nestor is an idiot.

I love the O's. It's Andy I can't stand. And I believe in earnest that Nestor's hatred for Angelos has ultimately evolved into his hatred for the O'S.

Brummie_Oriole said:

Someone said they never hear anything postive out of my mouth.

I love a challenge.

So here are ten positive things about the O's that I see, no sarcasm I promise.

1. The young guys being ready to take the next step.

2. Berken, DH and Tillman all taking their licks last year and showing signs of learning.

3. Following number 2, the depth the O's now have at the starting pitcher position. When Milltread goes down with an injury better known as Thirty-games-under-500-itus, we will be able to turn to a guy who has numerous major league starts under his belt.

4. Andy overhauling the bullpen.

5. A decent mix of veterans and young guys on this roster. Reminds me a bit of the makeup of the '95 Indians.

6. The removal of cancers like Mora, Walker and Zaun.

7. A power driven lineup that may actually give poor Guthrie a few more wins this year.

8. Guthrie no longer having to carry the ACE burden.

9. Depth on the bench (Pie, Wigginton and Andino all had numerous starts last year.)

10. A rise in payroll!

See that wasn't so hard.

Roch, what are your feelings about starting Matuz and Tillman right out of the gate with so many games against the AL East the first month. Wouldn't they be better off refining their game at AAA least until June and building up their confidence? What would happen to their confidence if they had to be demoted afer a few bad starts? At least the Yanks and Red Sox take a lot of pitches and if they aren't sharp there will be a lot of walk/homers.

I don't think Matusz needs any more time in the minors. It looks like Tillman will have some competition for the fifth spot. - Roch

So Andy sold the drugs to Brian Parker and/or forced him to take them.

Wow. That is a stretch even for Paul. I think he is also responsible for this rash... darn you Andy. I think I figured out which paper Bruh works for its the Sun.

It's not the Baltimore Sun... it's not the British paper called the Sun. It's that paper that you see in the supermarkets that has photos of Bigfoot, Nessie, predicts the word will end in the year 2000 or maybe 2012.

I think he interviewed Elvis last week he was in Australia with Tupac. They apparently are lovers and have two children. Andy performed the ceremony at Bulle Rock in a night time ceremony. Papparazzi and helicopters were held off by the UFO presence in the area.

Brummie, I have to disagree with #3 and #6. I don't think Millwood will be the failure you expect him to be. I also don't think that Walker and Zaun were the cancers you think. Walker was just bad, but he was a good clubhouse guy. Zaun, in particular, was a great clubhouse presence, accepted his demotion to backup well (in fact, he performed much better after Wieters came up), and mentored Wieters until his trade to Tampa Bay. I do agree with pretty much everything else, some to a higher degree than others. As other posters have said, it is nice to see that you can talk positively about the team.
